Why do people post their (usually hot) takes, and then proceed to preemptively threaten everyone who may reply arguing for a different point of view with an instablock or something to that effect? If your post does not aim to spark an honest dialogue, what's the point?

@nprofile…a4jv And written by Alan Kay's wife, too. (The story, not the screenplay.) That's actually how they met.

@nprofile…a4jv The reason I asked you to watch Tron is that the music was written by Wendy Carlos. Back when I was in college, my pals and I were huge fans of A Clockwork Orange (and Tron), and one day they aired the latter on TV. We had watched the movie many times before, but we didn't know she had composed the soundtrack. The next day in class, we just said: “Did you watch Tron yesterday?” “Yes!” “Wendy Carlos!!” It was fun. Anyway, you don't need to watch it now, I guess.

@nprofile…a4jv Was it your first time? What did you think of it? Also, now watch the original Tron.

@nprofile…a4jv That's right, but Ian Anderson was being sarcastic, I guess? Thick as a Brick was meant as a parody of concept albums, I think.

@nprofile…a4jv Maybe, but it wasn't the original intention. They just wrote several different songs and then linked them together. I assume they did so to make fun of progressive rock bands.
That said, isn't the lore of the album that the lyrics were one huge poem written by a kid?

@nprofile…a4jv That was my main beef with p4g, actually. Baton pass was a great way to share the cost of SP among all members of the team. No matter how hard I tried to make everyone participate equally in battles, I found the MC always running out of SP while the others still had plenty. Also, the combat becomes slow and repetitive on higher difficulties because you need to farm exp points. Mementos was a great idea in that regard. All I can do in p4g is keep revisiting previous dungeons.

@nprofile…a4jv Just curious, but what's wrong with the combat in p5? I'm replaying p4g right now and I'm missing many QoL improvements that were in p5.

@nprofile…mdcm I remember when it came out. I could only stomach about four episodes, and I spent all of them shouting at the screen: “WHEN ARE YOU GOING TO DO SOMETHING??”
Also, that's when I realised that most moe fans identify cute with dumb, like in the meme. Shortly after, I stopped watching anime.

@nprofile…h6ty Makes sense. In the kind of applications I do (web-based), we always know which version is in production (and even if that was not the case, the logs are closely associated with it), so line numbers are usually more useful.

2026-05-17 18:57:18 GMT

@nprofile…h6ty Then what you call error message is what I called logs.
Why would you put the git commit hash in log messages? I'm curious, though I confess I'm asking even before giving it a serious thought, so maybe the answer is obvious.

- reply

@nprofile…h6ty It makes no sense (to me, other people may rightfully disagree) to have internal info about the application in the error message, but it does help a lot to have it in the logs, even if every error message was different, which is not always the case. Also, the line number helps too in my particular case.

@nprofile…jkv0 @nprofile…mdcm The joke, I assume, is that his voice was (in most of his roles, at least) sort of sombre and whiny. Also, he was German, so he sounded vaguely threatening. I think there was an old episode of The Simpsons where they used it to read children's books with hilarious results.

@nprofile…v7dn That was the main selling point of CAcert. It was not created by big actors, but by tech-savvy people who recognised the abysmal situation of certificates and certificate authorities, and tried to do something about it. Big actors blocked that initiative, but realised they could exert even more control over everyone by issuing free certificates themselves, at least for a while.

@nprofile…v7dn When LE came out, I remember I was distrustful of them, because there were previous grassroots initiatives for free certificates, like CAcert, that didn't take off for lack of industry adoption, but LE came out of nowhere and exploded like a bomb. Maybe I was on to something.

@nprofile…tslx I knew about robota, which, I assume, is where the word robot comes from, but I didn't make the association when I read @nprofile…plxw's post.
Interesting that the words for onion are similar in Polish and Spanish (‘cebolla’).

@nprofile…8f02 One thing I've always liked about 1980s hardware is that it was human size. By that I mean that it was understandable to its most minuscule detail. Today's systems' complexity and cost have made diversity and experimentation, as you very well put it, unknown and unthinkable.
