I do really like the ideas Pubky brings to the table like having full control of where your data lives with homeservers and PKARR, having the ability to index the global state with DHT, being able to use files instead of events, etc. Cool stuff!
But also things do feel a bit opaque. Seeing the homeserver code for a Google bucket config is a little worrisome, just because it is not stated if your data on the official Pubky homeserver you sign up with on the Pubky App is really just stored on Google or how that's managed.
The docs cover PKARR a lot but there doesn't seem to be many details about the PKARR relays that are needed to run the system. Are those censorship resistant even?
I am excited about decentralized protocols and I want to build with tools that give people the most freedoms and control over their data. I feel Pubky does right on a lot of Nostr's shortcomings, but I don't want to commit to building on Pubky without being confident in its direction and current standing.
What do you think?

Sure, but doesn't the client need to know which relay your NIP-65 data is on to even do that in the first place? Yeah you could manually type that in, but that just feels like bad UX, and also limits what new users and normies would be able to do and find. If we had DHT, wouldn't this indexing problem be fixed?
Also how many clients actually do utilize outbox?

I mean so many apps on here already Do rely on a global state. Unless your client pulls from a huge predefined relay, you won't see a lot of data or know where to look for user information if they start using your client. You Could provide a list of relays you prefer, but who's spending the time to do that?
Also, things can exist in community contexts still, it just means that client might not rely on the DHT.
You're right that in many cases, it would disincentivize Outbox model stuff, but that implementation is up to clients, and I think DHT would probably be used for querying global stuff and posting stuff and whatnot would use your specified relays.
I think DHT would be a great approach for this, it doesn't take away that you use certain relays for whatever purpose, just makes information and account indexing a lot easier and prevents centralization on a relay level.

I'm probably not gonna make a protocol, that is a lot of work and I am no expert on the matter. whatever good comes around I'll make tooling to make it fit with my vision more.
I think some compatibility would be good but whatever comes next is not gonna be using secp256k1 just due to performance. maybe a new key can be derived from your nsec in whatever comes next?? who knows.
whatever the next social protocol, it'll be substantially different and probably not have compatibility by default.
would you be more amenable to using something if you could transfer your nostr posts and profile data?

welp there 100% does need to be a successor to nostr. building an app with it has made me realize just How centralized it really is.
Don't get me wrong, I Love Nostr. This place has taught me so much in the short time I have been here and has opened my eyes to a whole new world. But I can also acknowledge that the architecture has some inherent problems and I would love to see something more p2p and censorship resistant. I think my ideal sorta thing looks like Bitsocial + Pubky. I like your idea with the social indexing too!

I have been really in love with the ideas both Pubky (https://www.pubky.org/) and Bitsocial (https://bitsocial.net/) bring to the table of the future of the web and social protocols.
I love the idea that Pubky brings of having your identity and your own storage linked. Having the means to choose where your data is hosted and with which identity is a Huge gamechanger.
Bitsocial's P2P aspect of each node providing more bandwidth for the whole network is such an alluring idea.
I would like to see if these ideas can be combined to make a collaborative protocol where users have ownership of their data and what services can access it but also host it over a P2P network.
Maybe this could be achieved with a Pubky homeserver based on IPFS? Something like that idk.
Would this make credible exit harder? Is there a reason the Pubky team avoided relying on P2P technology?
I am still very new to this whole world of decentralized protocols and such so please inform me thusly! Would love to hear your thoughts :)

I really like the mechanics behind the protocol! I like the focus on moderation and spam as well as those are things nostr definitely suffers from. The HTTP relay is a seemingly elegant solution bridging the gap for P2P while avoiding the computational load of DHT.
How will moderation deletions work? Afaik IPFS is immutable so how would that work? I am not very well versed in the world of IPFS so please forgive any ignorance.
I also see that Votes are mentioned in the React docs and with 5chan. What are those meant to be used for on a protocol level?
I would really like to toy around with this as a dev, but I do not want to touch React with a 10ft pole. Are there any plans for other framework libraries like Vue or Svelte or a general Typescript SDK?
I am a big fan of nostr, and for all its problems, I think it is a major step up in user freedoms as opposed to the standard way of doing things. But the idea of each node creating more bandwidth for the network as a whole is a very appealing one. Also not having to deal with relay centralization would be great lol

They're absolutely right tho, COVID is very dangerous as is and is more akin to HIV/AIDS than anything. In fact, HIV/AIDS researchers have been studying COVID because of how similar they are. COVID binds to organelle cells and causes long term, irreversible damage to your body. Like every time you get it you get brain damage because your brain literally swells (bc it attacks your brain too!). It vastly increases your risk for things like stroke, chronic illness, heart problems, autoimmune diseases, etc. and each infection stacks. It also alters your immune system and makes it permanently weaker afaik. You only need one bad spin on the wheel to be permanently disabled in some capacity or even bedridden. This shit is not a cold.
Why would you trust the greedy pedophiles who told us that everything's fine? They just want money, they don't care if you're disabled. Harder to revolt when you're chronically ill too.
Also masking is a great way to avoid facial recognition!
You don't gotta mask 24/7 but doing it at the grocery store or something protects you and others from unnecessary disease and disability.

Omg sorry to bother, I hope you are feeling better and recovering fast and well!!
This worked, the problem was I didn't realize that you needed to be a member of the relay itself (NIP-43) in order to send events to it. I didn't know that NIP existed lol. I also wasn't authenticating properly with the libraries.

Hi, thank you for taking the time to respond to my thoughts on the matter!
My goal is not to be dogmatic, I am ultimately a builder and I want to use the tools that will allow for people to take control of their data and allow for as much sovereignty as possible.
Thank you for clarifying the ToS situation. Given the nature of corporate control, I tend to be wary of such things, especially how Synonym is the primary driver of this project. I was worried that this reflected some aspect of the AT protocol, some hidden centralization.
I do see the amazing benefits that this architecture can provide, you really do hit all the main problems with the Nostr architecture and I want to be in the loop for all the advancements that are made.
I really do want to build with Pubky, the lack of any real homeserver implementations is definitely a turn off for the time being. I also think having to download an app is also a major point of friction that many normal folk won't want to swallow. As we have learned from Nostr, architecture is unfortunately not a selling point for most.
What is the roadmap looking like? Are there any plans to have something like NIPs or BIPs?
Once things become more fleshed out, what will standardization/specs look like?
It doesn't seem like Tether or Synonym are non-profits. How can we trust that neither party will try to assume control over the project? Yes, it is open source, but the funding is what will keep it going.
What is the business model here?
What will genuine collaboration and support with the open source community look like?
Please let me know your thoughts! I am eager to hear them. I have an app idea I have been toying with that could benefit from Pubky's architecture.

Lack of standardization. Given that the project is still early, I understand things are due to change, but there are no standards for how things like the key rings should work or how the homeservers should work or interoperate. It just feels very centralized in a sense because I wouldn't be able to make my own implementations without having to copy straight from Pubky Core, and I figure that will have breaking changes. Whereas, with nostr, if I wanted to make some signer implementation, I can just look at the NIP. But maybe I'm missing something.
Pubky feels like an idea (a good one at that!) with a series of scripts, not the basis of a new protocol or internet.
There is no ecosystem, I would presume from lack of usage and lack of standardization. Maybe standardization will come in the future, but I didn't see anything on their website detailing anything of the sort.
One of the strengths of Nostr is its endless interoperability. Yeah, it's kinda jank sometimes, but it's beautiful that every client just Works (to some extent) with each other. Everything contributes to everything else. Standardization can also be a pain because if you make a shit standard that everyone uses, then you'll need to accommodate with backwards compatibility and such.

I do really like the idea of Pubky, but it feels lacking in many ways. I really love the interoperability on nostr, everything contributes to the wider ecosystem here and it's beautiful!!
The idea of PKARR and DHT is very appealing and I think would go a long way if somehow implemented for nostr. Pubky atm does not make it very clear where your homeserver is and how you can host one. It doesn't seem like there even is a Homeserver implementation, not like there is a standardized protocol for anyone to implement it seems.
I also don't like Synology's privacy policy, like wdym your signer app can respond to legal requests???
There are also no Implementation Prossibilities (think NIPs) and it just feels very top-down in nature whereas Nostr is such a wonderful little nook of the internet that is very collaborative.
I think nostr's architecture needs some work, loading times and bandwidth usage especially. Deleting notes would be nice too lol. I don't know if these things (and the other problems) will be fixed with more NIPs and relay adoption, or if there needs to be a nostr v2 of sorts.
I would love to hear all of your thoughts as to what the future of this space looks like! Do you think FIPS tackles any of these issues?

It seems I am unable to send a join request to the group unless I am using the pubkey set in the config. Public joins are open.
It could be an issue with the group identifier because the docs do not make it clear what the group identifier should be. I figure it is just "{host}'{name}" but idk what zooid sets as the ID.

Ok cool! So I am trying to use zooid for my project and running the provided command (after making the proper directories and config and such), it says it is running on :3334 and that the config is loaded
main.go:71: running on :3334
lib.go:72: Loaded relay.toml
My client is able to connect and I am able to pull relay info from nak but posting events just doesn't work, regardless of kind and even with groups turned off. There are no logs coming from zooid either. I can't pull nip29 info from nak though, but maybe that's just a nak problem - not sure.
I am using docker instead of podman because it is what I have installed already. afaik they are functionally the same, but idk if there's anything specific about zooid if that would affect things.
I tried to set up Caravel so I could see if the relay management would help but that didn't want to work (would love if that was fully containerized btw! would love to help) . I also tried to use the authenticated API stuff from nak but that didn't work, could just be a skill issue tho.
I am new to the world of nostr so please forgive my inexperience!
btw ignore my PR because it turns out I forgot to set my ports in my compose.yml and I modified the nginx config from the flotilla tutorial because I thought it was an SSL issue but nope lol.

What do you all see as the next open social protocol? It seems there are many issues with the Nostr architecture that cannot be fixed with some NIP adoptions by relays or clients. For what it is though, I think it's incredible.
Pubky doesn't seem very clear to me but I do like the DHT approach and credible exit stuff. @npub1jvx…7yqz Also brings up some valid critiques and ideas.
So I'm curious what you all think the next steps are :)

Oh definitely. I would use it in some cases, probably mostly to help with debugging stuff because AI gives a granular and more human way to search for things and ask questions. Even when it's wrong, it can still point you in the right direction.
I definitely agree with your last statement, if I am only doing something for a client and it doesn't need to be the best - I would probably use a bit of AI to at least make the structure and just build and fix from there.
I said in my original post that I have been interested in self-hosting models as this solves many of the issues I have with generative AI, but I haven't committed to looking too deeply into it just due to being busy and fixing my homeserver lol

I feel very similarly. I am also studying comp sci atm and I feel I am one of only a handful of students who are morally opposed to the damages of the AI ecosystem.
I use it at a complete minimum, opting to read documentation thoroughly and hand-rolling my own code. I have also seen studies showing that gen AI tools make people Less productive as they have to spend more time fixing the code of the model and also make it so they don't learn the underlying systems of what they're creating.
I think generative AI also feeds into the hustle culture of capitalism, it's all just Go Go Go and nothing about putting love into your creations. My coding projects are my art, they are how I breathe my life into this world, and it sucks to feel like you have to rush for no good reason.
I love this world dearly. I feel crazy because everyone around me is all-in on this technology, but I cannot, in good faith, use these tools given the damage they are causing and will continue to cause.

How do you all go about using AI?
I have generally tried to steer away from it, given the egregious water usage and pollution the data centers generate; not to mention the digital privacy aspect of big tech companies training their models off your personal data.
It doesn't sit right with me - but I also understand that this is a really cool technology with its own upsides and downsides. I understand I am in the minority, especially amongst developers and Nostr enthusiasts.
I wish to fight for a better world with the technologies available to us, but I do not wish to contribute to the harms that the corporations building this technology are committing intentionally.
I am curious about self-hosting smaller models but I haven't taken the plunge just due to being busy.

This is really interesting! The project still seems to be quite early but it looks like things are coming together slowly but surely. I think the architecture does tackle some of the problems of Nostr like relay centralization, efficiency, and data ownership but the docs don't do a great job of explaining how different services should build things in standard forms (think NIPs) and how homeservers can and should be utilized by users.
Most people, even those with a more technical background will probably not want to do the work and maintenance of hosting their own server and it is unclear to me where your data lives when you don't host your own homeserver. I think it would be cool if your phone could be a homeserver with just an app install, but maybe that wouldn't be the best.
ALSO I read through the privacy policy of Pubky Ring and Pubky App and it just feels like they collect too much information. Given the fact they don't have a keyring app for iOS yet, I will hold off on adoption for now and see how things progress.

On a separate note, I am thinking about talking to local businesses and seeing if you could trade in some magic for something like a sticker or a drink or something! Which would definitely fall more in line with crypto usage as magic.

It's definitely something I have been thinking about given the nature of Nostr and instant transactions (like you said) but I am a bit wary because users will start off with some magic so they can post quests and such so anyone hosting an instance would need to have a pool of crypto that they can give to new users which doesn't sound like a great idea. I feel there are more caveats, even without this limitation and I just worry it has the potential to bypass the point of the app, but I am truly open to hearing your thoughts!
I am definitely inclined to have crypto wallet support so people can transfer funds without worry, but that would probably be a separate optional thing.

I found out about this whimsical and magical place because I have been working on an app called sidequests!
It's a self-hosted, open-source community app that encourages and incentivizes people to connect and support each other through quests! Quests can be anything like "I need a ride somewhere" or "Can someone help me move my furniture!" Users gain magic by doing quests and spend magic to post quests. There are also adventures which are public quests where the hosts can set a Secret and ppl who show up can get some magic if they put in the secret (plaintext, link, QR)! Magic can be used to unlock user flair and things like badges, backgrounds, fonts, etc.
After an event, users can make a community post showing what they did on their quest/adventure so other people can get a glimpse into the magical worlds of their neighbors and get inspired to help out in their communities!
Currently, it is a pretty traditional web app in the sense that it uses Docker and PostgreSQL for user data and such. I am a big proponent of data sovereignty and I Do Not Want People's Data!! I already knew about ActivityPub but it didn't satisfy the use cases I wanted. The AT protocol had the same limitations. So I did some digging on different social protocols and I stumbled across this magical realm!
My eyes were literally fucking tearing up because this was everything I had dreamed of and more!!! Soooo needless to say, I am rewiring my entire project to use Nostr.
The project is still in alpha, and since I am using Nuxt as my framework, I am now working on converting the Svelte NDK bindings to Vue ones so I (and others of course!) can use Vue with the NDK. I am passing all tests atm but I need to do some testing and documentation work.

I am genuinely going to convert basically all of my projects to using Nostr because this is not only the future, but the present (🎁) we deserve.

I think you're thinking about Nostr as one giant singular thing that Needs to have a killer feature. It is an ecosystem that will grow with every organism that spouts. There are so many features and so many implementations of things that will draw in more people. I just found out about it and I am going to make every open source app I create use it as a backbone - and hopefully that will draw more people and passion in, which will develop our ecosystem further!
It's going to take time, but we just need to spread the word and help people to understand why this ecosystem is so revolutionary. It is quite technical, which I think will be the biggest barrier to entry for most so if we can help to make it more approachable maybe that will help too! Let me know your thoughts :)
