I was once engaged to a self-proclaimed communist manchild who made me scream my feelings just to be heard and then called me abusive. He also had a panic attack one time because I held him accountable for his failures to be present in the relationship. I remember he also often used his neurodivergence as an excuse. We're both AuDHD. He's just never been socialised with the same expectations and social standards as women have. He's been outsourcing emotional labour to the women in his life: his mum, his sister, and me back then. So that's just his male privilege, not his neurodivergence. I'm glad he's been deported back to America. Oh, he's an American who never deconstructed his orientalism and colonial gaze, overstaying his welcome here in Indonesia. There are levels of men's fvckeries that are hiding behind leftist and disability justice language and are proof that sexuality isn't a choice. Because what do you mean I still like men? Tf.
Men are the first victims and the ultimate perpetrators of patriarchy. If they haven't dismantled that shit within themselves, they should steer clear of women. Just saying.
Don't argue with me, argue with your dads.

Some rando called me an "Indians replacer" and told me I'm a hater… because I called him a coloniser for coming to my mention under my survival fund request post, leaving a non-sequitur comment. One, I'm Indonesian; not everyone who speaks English on the internet is American, but I get the confusion, given how Western-centric your rotten worldview is. Two, what the fuck, lmao, that "Indians replacer" is ironic and offensive to both South Asians and the Indigenous peoples of America. Three, never did I say I wasn't a hater, lol.

2026-08-03 17:51:54 GMT

Saying "I'm not risking potentially scamming people by sharing direct aid posts" when the direct aid is for Palestinians is so coloniser-coded, and it's just generally fascist-coded. Palestinians are treated as a presumptively fraudulent population, solidarity with them is framed as a danger to others, withholding support is framed as responsible public protection.
Making a verified campaign for Palestinians on GoFundMe or Chuffed isn’t like verifying a Meta account or verifying ownership of your website on Google Search Console or Meta. Some people should get better at lying about their lack of conscience and unwillingness to use their brains.
If you’re broke, you can just say that, y’kno. Say that you’re broke and the only thing you can do is amplify campaigns. Or say that you’re overwhelmed by the Palestinians in your mentions and just need some time before you can re-engage.
Admitting limitations is more dignified than claiming you’re unwilling to amplify potential scammers when you have no proof that they are scammers. You’re just revealing to the public what you would do if you were in their position.
Do you really believe that suspicion sounds more respectable than admitting you don’t want to extend solidarity? Neither sounds respectable, btw. One just disguises complicity behind common sense, when that common sense is politically manufactured and socially reproduced. How is sounding like your state government more respectable, especially when you’re living in a settler-colonial state, the EU, or the UK, all of which carry colonial baggage?
Lie better. Cover your ass better. Those boots still need cleaning, and your tongue and thumbs have a lot of work to do.

Here's the thing, though… Islam is a religion, and feminism is a political movement. I get that this will trigger the "Islam is the way of life" derailment comments, as if those will answer for their own complicity in the everyday misogynistic behavior they've accepted as part of Islam. Yet here we are, so hear me out.
When I'm out there surrounded by people from all walks of life with different political alignments and different stages of iman, I use "feminism" when talking about real policies that affect my life, other women's lives, and men's lives alike. When I'm surrounded by Muslims who come to certain gatherings with a "Muslim" label and their "Muslim" identity, then I use "Islam." Do you get what I'm saying? Or is unity in diversity a strange concept in the modern Ummah's political da'wah vocabulary?
When you really think about it, feminism and Islam are labels in women's rights discourse that hold their own traditions and values, but do they speak to only one demographic? No. If Islam is the way of life, if Islam is rahmatan lil alamin, then does it matter if someone translates Islam into a certain political language that, in practice, is basically Islamic? If the roots are in tawheed, if the trunk is justice, if the shade reaches all who are oppressed, then let it be called Islam, and may it look like feminism, taste like liberation, and walk like truth.
The focus shouldn't be on the name or label; it should be the mercy. The focus should be the freedom of every woman, regardless of belief, past, body, or banner. We don't ask Islam to conform to feminism or vice versa. What we should ask is for Muslims to embody the Islam that liberates.

The destruction of communism in Indonesia benefited capitalist countries such as the United States and Japan. If the communists had come to power in Indonesia, the US forces in South Vietnam would have been surrounded by communist countries in Southeast Asia.

I need this met before 31/07, before I will have to worry about bills the following month. Please help within your capacity.
I'm disabled, unable to work, not because I lack the capability but because conventional employment worsens my disability progressively until it became medically unsustainable. Eventually I had to choose between continuing down that path or producing something more meaningful with my skills, despite now rarely having access to my medication due to the loss of my financial safety net. I chose the latter.
If you find that my voluntary work with https://mutualaidspace.org is worth supporting, please do so by pledging as little as $1 monthly via Liberapay or other tiers available across Liberapay, ko-fi, and Patreon. One-off support helps too.

It's unfair that you hate Westerners, or people who live in the "political West," as a default, and tell them to prove you wrong by treating you and people in your region like human beings with agency.

2026-07-21 20:53:51 GMT

Notice the move: I say "Arabised" denies local agency, and the reply is "okay, sure, but it's still not democratic or pluralistic." What exactly are you trying to say here, Kerry?
And "democratic countries generally support a two-state solution" proves nothing about the region's pluralism. It proves that a two-state framework has been the dominant diplomatic consensus for decades, for reasons having nothing to do with whether Arab states are internally democratic. Plenty of non-democratic illegal states back a two-state solution too; US, Canada, Australia are some of them. There's no real democracy on stolen land, after all. Plenty of actual democracies have been walking away from it as facts on the ground shift. Correlation with "democratic countries" isn't evidence of anything except which framework has had the most diplomatic runway.
If the claim is that lack of democracy in the region justifies skepticism toward Palestinian self-determination specifically, say that plainly instead of implying it through a vague appeal to what "democratic countries generally" do.

2026-07-21 20:27:42 GMT

"Arabised," "Arabisation," "Islamised," and "Islamisation" are terms I will curse you and your entire lineage for. I don't care if those are the terms imperially educated academics use; that's precisely why I will curse you and your entire lineage for pushing your imperial wording into society.
Those terms operate on assumptions of external imposition, of native replacement, of ethnic cleansing, of forced assimilation, treating local ethnic groups as passive objects, passive recipients. Those terms are the European/Western empire projecting its own crimes against humanity onto the region, assuming there was never a native group of people in that region exercising their own agency to adopt the language as their lingua franca and/or practice the religion.
Nobody calls the 1,300+ ethnic groups in Indonesia "Indonesianised." The Republic of Indonesia still records 700+ spoken native languages, yet we can all communicate with each other just fine because we all speak Bahasa Indonesia. I know you're not that stupid to be oblivious to the term "lingua franca." The Indonesian nation-state still records six official religions, despite Muslims being the majority in the country; Indonesia has the biggest Muslim population in the world, and Indonesia has more Christians than the entire Australian continent.
Yet, for some reason, you want ethnic groups native to the SWANA region and the rest of the African continent to think they have been forced to assimilate and convert like Indigenous peoples in North America and Australia, while conveniently forgetting Judaism and Christianity weren't first revealed in Europe, there were already Christians and Jews all over the SWANA and the rest of Africa's regions before refugees from Anatolia and Europe came, and the biggest Muslim population on earth isn't in the African continent or West Asia, and it was never part of the Arab conquest.

"Arabised" as if there was a genocide of local ethnic groups and forced usage of Arabic as the lingua franca, with no agency from the locals to use it. That term is the European/Western empire projecting its own crimes against humanity onto the region, assuming there was never a native group of people in that region exercising their own agency to use the language.

Yo, just because I need mutual aid to survive doesn't mean I will shut up about my political and theological views. Poverty and disability can't stop me from being annoying on the internet. This mouth must yap, these fingers must tap. Otherwise I will be anxious about the fact that my electricity and water will very likely be cut off this afternoon.

2026-07-19 22:03:05 GMT

I have nothing but unbridled ire for the late Muhammad Ibn Abd al-Wahhab and Ibn al-Saud, such that I will not even try to control myself when some internet randos try to get me riled up with their "explain exactly what Muhammad Ibn Abd al-Wahhab said in his books that was against the Qur'an and the Sunnah"; I will lean fully into it. I will embrace the deep repressed fury and just spit it out on them, with a promise to testify against them during Hisab. There's a level to my rage that reaches a certain place deep in my soul, and it belongs to the collective, to the Ummah, to the fellow Muslims persecuted by these scum apologists and revisionists, to every drop of blood spilt in the name of Muhammad Ibn Abd al-Wahhab's interpretation of Islam and al-Saud Arabia. Most of their apologists are men, unsurprisingly; I wonder why 🥴 oh, and convert Muslims from the West, of all genders. Listen, Orientalism doesn't magically disappear after you take shahada. It doesn't work that way. Orientalism comes in many forms; the widely popular paternalistic and condescending version of Orientalism isn't the only one. Yet they're all equally harmful to non-Western societies (which includes Arabs) and non-Arab Muslims all the same. Oh, is this too complicated for you? Try to be colonised maybe and witness the thing that liberates you, that gives you the language of resistance and liberation, becomes what oppresses you in the hands of men and way too many women, for survival under the tyranny of men.

I can knock on more doors, but making them open their doors, letting me in to talk about our lord and saviour requires another set of skills I've never been equipped with and never will be. For one, Muslims don't do that. Two, using the metaphor is never not funny.
Besides, I'd rather gain skills on how to rob rich people politely than do it door-to-door. I've never been a good sales person. I am, however, lacking compassion for those who enrich themselves while keeping others poor. #MutualAidSavesLives

Nothing a quick clear cache can't solve. Palestinians can tag as many people as they need to, to get people to care about them and their family. If you're bothered by the tag, or your notification tab is glitching and you're unable to scroll, what's stopping you from telling them privately? They need to tag people publicly; otherwise how else are they going to get attention and help for their mutual aid/crowdfund?
Even in the so-called decentralised social media, boasting about "no artificial algorithm," they still get ignored, because frankly the issue is beyond algorithm; it's about actual financial capacity, and the willingness to boost. That tag is the algorithm.
So even if you're broke and unable to help financially, boosting the post costs nothing. It takes $0, literally. A glitch in your notification tab is really just a tiny shit that is not supposed to be a fkn issue you have to involve everyone in the original mentions over.
But it's just me though, idk. Maybe I'm just too sensitive and you're annoying. idk.

Are the perpetrators men or the Taliban? Perhaps these da'wah bros are so insecure about their own and their brethren's masculinity, and unwilling to admit complicity in state violence because of the perceived sweeping statement against men in particular. I mean, if you have the energy to not-all-men state violence against women, then you should have the answer or justification for why it is only against women and what exactly you have done to prevent state violence. When blatant misogyny becomes a proper policy, then these men's mental gymnastics to disassociate themselves from the state apparatus are only that, mental gymnastics, nothing more and nothing less.
HOWEVER, at the same time, this is something we should tread carefully on. What's happening in Iran started from the West's paternalistic rubbish and the Iranian diaspora being imperial agents; it doesn't mean state violence doesn't exist there. The violence is real; the instrumentalisation of that violence for imperial ends is also real. Both are true simultaneously. Everyone engaging in this conversation carries a responsibility to know what they are consenting to. With that in mind, speaking for Afghan women now requires answering: toward what end, through whose infrastructure, and who benefits from this particular framing reaching this particular audience at this particular moment.
Afghan women, all Muslim women, WE deserve more than allies who speak for us and think that's enough solidarity. Speaking for Afghan women is the bare minimum. Any Zionist American disinformation agency, Gulf state with its petrodollar interests, the Russian state, any external power structures that historically had a hand in atrocities in Afghanistan can very well pay many of you to SPEAK FOR AFGHAN WOMEN. What they won't be doing is disclosing the motive behind speaking up.
So tell me, what about Afghan women's liberation do you imagine when speaking up for them, through whose infrastructure, and who benefits from this particular framing reaching a wider audience at this particular moment?
Don't project the reality where Muslims are a minority onto the discourse either. That framing is irrelevant. Muslims are the dominant group in Afghanistan. Use your class analysis. Deconstruct that latent Orientalism that latches onto your leftism while you're at it.

RE: https://kolektiva.social/@wrzky/116877467627786554
Ugh because of this notif, I remember why that post bothered me so much.
It's just that I hope people are more honest with themselves without pretending to be something they're not. For instance: you're having problems with exercising sovereignty and control simultaneously, so you universalise your problems, assume everyone else shares your grievances, and posture benevolence by appealing to certain traditional values you think everyone shares.
You could have just said you hate what you see and that shit makes you uncomfortable.
Or that photograph of two beautiful men having more action than you ever did your whole life made you want to hurl.
Just don't make it about children, when it's just about your miserable, toxic ass.
What children? Whose? Yours? Why are they here? What exactly are you doing as their parent letting them be here?
And what's even wilder to me is the fucking audacity to parrot fascist logic here of all places. As an Indonesian, let me tell you something many of you must've already known…
Some of the reasons why authoritarianism and/or fascism are well-received by many, even those who claim to know better, are 1) they think they know better, 2) they appeal to certain traditional values (often family), 3) they attack the pain points of traditional family values, 4) they blur the boundaries between the state and family, so the active ruler will easily target a random person or a group to be the common enemy to unite the people and to appear to be their saviour.
Their rhetoric often starts with something along the lines of "What about the children?!" or "What about our family?!" when they know jackshit about kids and their own family; because as adults, we assume we know ourselves and our kids better than kids do, and men of the house assign themselves as protectors of the family (pfft, I know).
In Islam, men are the providers in both financial (zahir) and emotional (batin) lol obv; in terms of "protection", we should protect each other, but men these days think that only women need protection, and don't think they themselves are also prone to being targeted and victimised by other men who hold more power than they do. Mfks think in a vacuum ffs, men are embarrassing. So anyways—
Of course these things don't need to be taught again, considering many of you are here because of something related to authoritarianism of some kind, at least remotely.
Just thought there should be a reminder every once in a while from a hijabi who has seen many forms of paternalism online and offline by locals and Westerners alike, to the extreme degree, historically and live. And they all start from an ordinary, seemingly righteous concern about the safety of children, family, women, about our peace and harmony… fuck off, it's about consolidating power. That "concern" is an authoritarian control testing the water.

Nah but seriously, what gay porn? I did see something on here that I wish I hadn't. Several. I even met some ableist, classist, capitalist scumbag here.
If it's porn of any kind, I can always block and go about my day. The latter is just too good to let it slide, and I have some pent-up energy to let out. Yeah, that's right. Be toxic to toxic people. Fuck the high road.
But seriously, what gay porn 😭 What did they even do to their account to make it sound like they're drowning in it, to make such a post??? As an admin even?!? Broooooooo

2026-07-04 13:51:33 GMT

RE: https://burnout.cafe/@admin/116857804772538444
This calls for a reality check. Did anyone make this admin join Mastodon at all?
Honourable admin of burnout.cafe instance, did you create and moderate that instance against your will? Please give us a sign.
Because why does it sound like you were asked (to put it lightly) to make your own instance and moderate it on your own by Mastodon or some other party than your own free will?
It's one thing to impose a rule and be stressed about an instance that we ourselves manage; it's another thing entirely to do all that to another that we aren't even part of. In public no less, lol. I'm curious, did social coercion ever work in your favour without repercussions down the line?
But I guess some of us are used to being the main demographic catered to by big tech; somehow, even in the most decentralised space, some of us yearn to be controlled by another. But alas, nobody does that here, so some of us think we should start controlling others. Whoa– We're witnessing a social phenomenon here. Behold, folks. This isn't what we're going to do in anarchist society. Just saying.
So anyways, what gay porn lol? This hijabi has never seen one. Something tells me this is about self-agency being not fully deployed. It's very common in kindergarten. I'm just surprised to see that here.
"If people want to publish pornography of whatever kind, they really should join or create focused instances for that" and then what? You're going to make another post calling out that instance too, knowing full well you have all the options to block them and the instance and go about your day, without making their creative expressions about your comfort?
"Don't we want to cultivate a more family-friendly environment that will attract a bigger public?"
No, actually. Who's "we"? Why would a whole family be attracted to a decentralised social media platform full of people being frustrated with people like you?
Actually, you know what, block them. Block mastodon.social. Just block the whole instance. Block me while you're at it. This social coercion started rubbing me the wrong way as I'm typing this.
Ffs. Bet you're one of those who think they know what's best for Muslim women. You really sound like one of those.

Liberal derailment in @npub1syq…yqmq has religious flavours. Missing the point is the point, actually. As a Muslim, I want to see more fellow Muslims use their 'aql more and start applying their own values politically, since most people who are contributing to the derailment seem to hold the key to Jannah or whatever. We're not in the West, we're not a secular country, and we've never been a theocracy either. But look at the history of the anti-communist purge and how they instrumentalised Islam and Pancasila. What happened then still shapes what happens now. Even the talk about a certain politician's sexuality having somehow become a topic at all isn't neutral.
It's not that it's counterproductive; as citizens, we shouldn't be the ones producing solutions or results with our criticism. As citizens who pay taxes, we should criticise the people who are supposed to serve the country, whose policies continue to disadvantage us. From a "productivity" standpoint in a capitalistic system, having a solution as a prerequisite just to criticise the government is already too much to ask from the people who work their asses off day and night to pay you. What exactly is the point of these politicians' existence in the government at all? What exactly are we paying these politicians for?
It's just a derailment to distract and sow division. What we should be asking ourselves and those who contribute to the derailment is, "Who benefits from redirecting the focus of the discourse on Indonesian policies onto a certain politician's sexuality? And who bears the cost and consequences of such derailment?"
It's still the politician who benefits from the derailment. It's still the state. It's still the ruling class, which should be responsible for 99% of the problems in this country; they're all benefiting from this. And who bears the consequences? Us. The people. It's still us who bear the consequences of getting derailed just because some of us are so fucking sure we're going to get into Jannah or whatever.
TL; DR – Stop arguing about who is a "good" Muslim, who is a "good" citizen, who is a "good" human being, or who is sleeping with whom. That is the oldest trick in the book to keep you poor and powerless. Look at your history, look at your wallet, and look at who holds the key to the prison cells, who holds the shovel to the unmarked graves, and who holds the budgets. The only moral question that matters is: Are the people in power serving us, or are we serving them?

Centring the finite as ultimate distorts the human being. When wealth becomes the highest good, everything else—dignity, community, justice—becomes negotiable. Take billionaires, for example. The endless pursuit of accumulation reshapes moral priorities and turns human worth into numbers.

Someone asked me why my posts condemning, criticising, cursing, and overall wishing harm upon the state government and/or present-day and past imperial powers are always invoking divine judgement and using Islamic concepts. They pointed out that it doesn't happen exclusively with Muslims; they said their "totally secular" Indonesian Hindu progressive friend also does the same thing, always invoking karma, divine judgement, all that jazz.
They also said something along the lines of "It's politics, not some religious discourse. The issues are grounded in material conditions, affecting actual human lives. Justice or consequences should be immediate and material, not spiritual and fuck knows when, yada yada yada," with their whole self-proclaimed radical chest.
Yes, they're from the metropole, if you're wondering.
So I was like, nah, man, you Westerners are just not mad enough, not pissed off enough at your imperial overlords. You think invoking divine judgement means we're spiritually bypassing material justice, or that we only say that online?
Bruuu, we also take it to the streets. We say it to their faces. Heck, we even wish for Prophet Isa (Jesus) to descend soon 😂 Don't piss off Indonesians. We will wish harm upon you in this life, in death, and the next.
In all seriousness, Indonesia has never been a secular country. What kind of secular nation-state declares divine oneness as its first and foremost principle in its national ideology?
The state may practise hypocrisy, authoritarianism, corruption, patriarchy, bootlicking, even genocide, but the language of divine accountability is already baked into the national moral grammar. People are not randomly "bringing religion into politics." The state did that at the foundation, then got mad when the people used it against power.
Hence we're pretty upfront with our words when expressing our frustration. If we die, we die. Our curse lives on alongside our hopes and dreams for a just future.
Also, stop universalising your Western moral framework born from centuries of religious wars between Christians in Europe specifically, then exported as everyone's problem, even in the land where Christianity was born. Secular-liberalism is your theology; we don't really care about that. We also get that your audacity and paternalism are the byproducts of the same lineage. Have you considered deconstructing that reflex and what it's actually serving, maybe?
And stop universalising it wherever you go; either through colonialism like what your imperial overlords still do, or through social-justice/anti-imperialist activism discourse, ironically.
TL;DR – learn non-Western history for fuck's sake.

Indonesia, please, enough with “reform”, and please stop conflating democracy with capitalism.
When people demand “system change”, it’s capitalism they want to change.

It takes a village to raise a child. It takes a village to ruin one too, you know? This trauma is too complex to be the work of just two incompetent, dysregulated adults who shouldn't have had children. Don't dismiss the teamwork or the collective effort society put into shaping me. Give credit where it's due.
I remember last Ramadan reading a thread by someone asking something along the lines of, "If اللّٰه never burdens a soul more than it can bear, then what about someone who unalives themself?"
Bruuuuhh, the replies were infuriating lmao. So, being a survivor myself, I think that's my area of expertise.
I've forgotten what my response was, but let me just tell you my full understanding of it without spiritually bypassing accountability.
Surah Al-Baqarah 2:286 should not be weaponised to erase human accountability. Poverty, abuse, racism, gendered violence, colonialism, genocide, abandonment, and social cruelty are not neutral “burdens from God.” They are manufactured conditions. People create them. Systems sustain them. Society normalises them. Then, when someone breaks under that weight, people suddenly want to spiritualise the outcome instead of asking who helped load the weight onto their back.
When a child grows up to be an ill-adjusted adult with suicidal thoughts, it doesn't happen in a vacuum. A child is part of a family unit, and that family is part of society. What happened to that child for them to grow up carrying burdens so heavy on their shoulders all alone? Why did the person that child became believe that hurting themself more would make their pain more bearable, or that dying was the only way to relieve them of it?
“But they always seemed so happy. They never looked depressed or suicidal.” What does "suicidal and depressed" even look like? I looked pretty when I was struggling with suicidal thoughts; I'm always pretty anyway 🤷🏻‍♀️ And did you regularly check on them? If the person ends up unaliving themself, then whatever care existed did not reach them where it needed to.
Being depressed and having your thoughts arrive at the conclusion that suicide is the only solution isn't an individual moral failure. Let's make that clear first. It's a sign of a society that abandons care and fails its moral test.
Poverty, racism, exploitation, harassment nobody believes happened, homelessness, racial and gender discrimination, colonialism, genocide, and countless others are not just background conditions. They are systems of harm. When those systems drive someone to depression, despair, or the belief that death is the only relief left, that isn't an individual moral failure. It means the system works as intended: it fails humanity by design, and society fails you.
You see, this is why Muslims should never depoliticise Islam under a global power structure that relies on our dehumanisation. Some of us have internalised that bullshit.

Racists, bigots, colonial apologists DNI

When survival becomes organised humiliation, people stop consenting quietly. It’s only a matter of time before people decide that being k¡lled by rulers is far preferable to living another day under these conditions. Don't come lecturing people about "violence is never the answer" when you can still afford to see meritocracy as something genuine and unemployment, poverty, homelessness as personal moral failures; when you refuse to sit with the contradictions; when you opt to exceptionalise almost everything, whether it concerns a certain group or a certain religious identity, and call it "nuance." We're Indonesian, not USian.
What are we doing?
Are we still the same nation that went to war against the Portuguese and the Dutch with bambu runcing, and called that war jihad fisabilillah in the 1560s and 1820s, far before Marx even drew the connections between capitalism and colonialism?
We might not be the same people, the same Acehnese, the same Javanese who went to war against colonial powers. But we are the same Ummah that owes a great debt to the Ottoman military for the cannons and gunners under Kurtoğlu Hızır Reis, who aided our Muslim brothers and sisters in 1560s Aceh against the Portuguese, where the Ottoman flag flew as a sign of Muslim unity under the Ottoman Caliphate; the same Ummah that took up arms under Prince Diponegoro's call of jihad against the Dutch and colonial extraction in Java in 1825–1830. Yet we're also the same Ummah that abandoned the Acehnese in the 19th century because, by then, the Ottomans were too weakened to materially respond, and our local ulema were bought by the Dutch Orientalist scholar Snouck Hurgronje, who converted to Islam to learn about Muslims, whom he called "Mohammedans," as objects of study to divide us from within.
He succeeded. He understood something the gunboats never did: capturing the legitimation machinery is cheaper than fighting it. Conquest by purchase of the minbar outlasts conquest by rifle, and it never had to end when the Dutch left.
The Ummah had been divided long before the Arabs revolted against the Ottoman Empire under European imperial manipulation, and had understood transnational solidarity long before Marxist internationalism gave it another vocabulary.
The Ummah here was subjected to two captures before they had names anywhere else. The first wore secular clothes: anything political, anything touching governance, was crushed, while ritual performance and akhlaqul karīm became matters between you and God alone, because fuck empathy and humanity, right? "Obedience to ulil amr is obedience to God," and they called it taqwa. Hurgronje wrote that manual decades before any mandate power bought its first mufti. The second capture came later wearing literalist clothes: ibn Wahhab's interpretation with a state behind it, folded into a nationalist project, until its heirs pointed at everything and called it bid'ah, conflating da'wah with Saudi propaganda. The colony was the laboratory. The methods “tested” here travelled, then came back rebranded as authenticity.
What are we even doing?
Is it because the oppressors now speak the same language as us and claim to worship the same God?
These oppressors were raised in the same traditions as those who abandoned knowledge, succumbed to manufactured enmity and moral panic, and murdered farmers, teachers, labourers, midwives; the working class in 1965–1966, in the name of jihad; the declaration of “God is the greatest” at the top of their lungs while parading the severed heads of farmers around the village. The same society that had not yet had a proper tool or concept for collective intergenerational trauma from 3.5 centuries of colonialism, and only had Islam as a moral framework and the language of liberation and resistance against colonial powers, by the time the successor of the British Empire planted a seed of backwardness that labelled Muslim revolutionaries like Tan Malaka and other members and sympathisers of the Communist Party kafirun just twenty years after independence.
The same Tan Malaka whose speech at Comintern in 1922 about the shared goal of Pan-Islamism and Marxism changed everyone's view of Islam, which was very likely Orientalist anyway, and of Indonesian resistance against colonial powers.
The same Tan Malaka who wrote a book that gives modern Indonesians a language to speak to power. To see the rot in the system itself. To hold power accountable for the structural violence it enforces. A book that the government eventually banned.
The government that wants us to see them as ulil amr. The same government that spiritualises its incompetence, that crushes dissent, whose religious ministry said teachers' salaries are amal jariyah, that calls activists foreign actors—because how else should they appeal to the masses other than by triggering the trauma of the descendants of the colonised?
When ideas are crushed and dissenters are criminalised or even pathologised, the harm doesn’t stay abstract. It shows up as hunger, as homelessness, as lives cut short.
Violence isn’t always soaked in blood. Poverty, homelessness, famine; these are forms of violence. They’re structural. Someone has made sure the poor stay poor while they fatten themselves up.
Yet some of us turn around and say, “Corruption is cultural in Indonesia. It's a collective sin,” and call it a day. No dialectical materialism, no questions about who benefits from lateral violence among broke citizens in this day and age, no nothing.
We have the moral architecture, we have historical records of wins and losses, of the most sophisticated synthesised concept of political theology and material obligations with spiritual accountability. We have material evidence of a pluralistic society in a nation-state that isn't secular and was never once a theocracy.
Yet most arguments from our best and brightest are bootleg copies of colonial logic to blame the oppressed and call it "holding ourselves accountable."
How do some people afford to spiritualise and moralise structural poverty and anti-intellectualism? How do you even participate in society, yet, when it comes to structural analysis, act like you're merely a rude guest looking in through the window?
What are you even doing with that fancy degree?
Thus, conclude today's Keputrian session. My sincere apologies for the absence of snacks, I can't afford them, I'm broke.
See you around.

$8.71 of $375, tysm to everyone who has shared my post and contributed. Four days to go and $366 still needed. It's my birth month and I'd like to spend it knowing I can cover groceries and medication.
A $5 monthly pledge helps me the most with my disability. One-off support is equally welcome. Boosting this is support too.
Thank you, thank you.

This roundup exists because I keep showing up to put it together, regardless of whether or not I need help myself. Not because I hope someone will also show up for me, but because this is genuinely the only thing I can do to help on most days. Some weeks it feels like none of this matters. We're supposed to help each other, not because we can, or because we want to, but because we must. That feeling of being helpless, cornered, isolated, it is by design. Who should we expect to show up when the system makes it normal to feel cornered, helpless, isolated in conditions built to do exactly that? If you can't or won't help me, then help them.

I've been tearing up randomly in less than 24 hours, and every time it's just five to ten minutes of hyperventilation and sobbing, but it always feels like my chest is really hurting. And the triggers were the late Affan Kurniawan, a random Instagram video of fellow Indonesian citizens in their ordinary lives, those activists who were found burnt to death under the rubble (they were killed, the government will tell you a different story tho), another video of Indonesian farmers, merchants in traditional markets, ordinary people who keep the economic wheel in the villages turning, who are wondering why everything has become expensive in the past seven months—at first I thought I suddenly had "nationalism" (God forbid), but then I also had the same visceral reactions when I was working on the Palestinian section in my article. Alhamdulillah it was apparently just a sign of me being human, grieving for fellow human beings, and enraged at my helplessness, at the elites, at those who speak so eloquently just to fucking punch down and sideways because—"meritocracy is real!" when it is fucking not. And then for some reason I cried again because I'm just one person; I've never felt this helpless before.
And then I realised, woah so many different emotions. During the same 24 hours as well, I've left comments under several Instagram posts, and each comment was essay-like, the weekly article has been abandoned, sleep was forgotten.
Now my head is full of sick scenarios for the end of global power structures and a message from my estranged mother asking me if I would ever forgive her.
Let me get some sleep.

As someone living in a Muslim-majority country, I can tell which ritual practice is cultural tradition, which one is Islamic, which one is for optics. Those Iranian footballers didn't need to kiss Al-Qur'an on camera. Nobody actually needs to kiss Al-Qur'an. Muslim community online centres Western comfort so much that they don't want to speak up against Muslim elites. I can understand why for Iranians in Iran. But not for the rest of the Ummah; some of y'all are weird and fascist actually, and some others are socialised in the West.
Muslims in the West live with significantly different material conditions; every critique may feel like anti-Muslim when it's simply anti-hypocrisy. I don't expect them to understand the difference, their lives matter more than those in the periphery, media platforms ensure it.
Non-Muslims, don't interact, or I will intentionally hurt your ego while questioning your politics.

Hey brain,
It'd be really helpful if you weren't instantly attributing every failure to the undeservingness of my existence. It's just one function in the bridge plugin. One bug. It's not a crime against humanity. Holy fuck, dude. You gotta chill. We're gonna have a blaming-parents-and-society session later, okay? Chill out for now, dude. It's just so ridiculous for us, at our big age, to be editing my code in literal tears, as if we're fighting for our right to live, ffs.

People claim to be polymaths so easily these days. How about a natural jacks-of-all-trades or a natural multitasking queen? Do you even understand the range of my skills and how I got it? Survival. That, and I rarely go outside. I've never gotten covid. But anyway. Someone just told me that I'm a genius, because I display "polymath characteristics: an expertise in more than one discipline". I've never felt so offended before. 'Genius and discipline'? We don't know her.

Currently fangirling over my very own Doctor Who x Yuri on Ice crossover fanfic from 2017. That girl can write stories, tf 🥹😍😭 The grammar errors are eclipsed by her storytelling skills. Such an immersive experience, it feels like watching a film in my mind. Her grammar sucked, but I love her for that; the absolute disrespect of this language committed by my 24-year-old self earns my respect and genuine appreciation.
Thank you for choosing this as a coping mechanism and means of survival.

UPDATE: 04/06/2026 18:30 UTC+7 | 12 days to deadline
$0/$375 – I need $375 in 12 days to stay fed, medicated, and connected. There's been no movement at all.
Inflation seems to be on the horizon in my country. It's sad for a nation rich in natural resources, but painfully expected as long as the US establishment and its allies in North America, Europe, Australia, and the SWANA region continue to exist.
A $5 monthly pledge is what helps me the most with my disability; one-off support is equally welcome. Any support is appreciated, including some black magic to 💀 war criminals and genocidaires.
Help keep me fed, medicated, and connected to comrades across borders, to keep working on mutual aid projects and keep writing.

It's a distinct feeling from seeing Australians treating Indonesia, Bali especially, like their backyard. They'll be coming here every other day. Most Australians don't know this, but the thoughts of "why are they like this?", "Sir, you're not supposed to drive a motorcycle like that", and "You wanna be cursed by the locals so bad, huh?" are the recurring themes, actually. But we're the friendliest people in the world 😀 but they're mostly fun lol.
But when Dutch tourists visit Indonesia, it's just... 🥴 Idk how to describe it. Well, I have described it at length in my previous toot. Hmm, instead of Bali, practically an Australian backyard and a New Moscow, the Dutch should do a pilgrimage across Java and Sumatra in the hope of reconnecting with their ancestral roots, y'kno… because there are a lot of old buildings, inherited from the colonial era. All haunted, obviously. See if they can connect with their ancestors there. That should be fun.

Praising a white male, a descendant of colonisers no less, for having a semblance of self-awareness about the structural privilege he has over native Indonesians he saw in his time visiting Bali, who narrated his experience as some sort of epiphany he just had that day in a one-minute Instagram reel, would be the very last thing I'd do before I die.
His reel is another flavour of colonial gaze, really.
"travelling is genuinely the fastest way to realise how much you've been taking for granted" is the most jarring part and my comment is actually a lot milder than what I actually had in mind.
You're telling me that nobody taught him, a fkn Dutch person, about what his country did? Be serious.
Since I'm pissed off, and I'm autistic, I'll just dump my frustration here.
The VOC (Vereenigde Oostindische Compagnie) was the world's first multinational joint-stock corporation, and the Dutch have leaned into that framing with considerable comfort for centuries. Framing it as a commercial enterprise rather than a colonial state project is enormously convenient, isn't it? 🤓 because it allows the violence to be attributed to corporate excess, to the greed of shareholders and wayward governors-general, rather than to a sustained national project of extraction and domination. The state gets to step back. The atrocities become a matter of poor corporate governance. Boo hoo 😢 corporations bad! colonialism? We don't know her!
HOWEVER, ironically, that's how you get Dutch museums that celebrate the Golden Age (Gouden Eeuw) as an era of merchant genius, artistic flourishing, and global trade, while the forced labour, the mass killings, the cultuurstelsel that reduced entire Javanese communities, my maternal ancestors, to subsistence while their crops fed European markets, exist as footnotes in the margin of a success story. I wonder how they frame the human trafficking of the Javanese labourers they sent to Suriname, AFTER the abolition of institutionalised slavery, hmmm 🤔
The “politionele acties”, the military campaigns of 1945 to 1949 to crush Indonesian independence, were literally called "police actions."
You know what our history calls that? DUTCH MILITARY AGGRESSION, two rounds of it.
Those are not two perspectives on the same event. They are two entirely incompatible political claims about what Indonesia was at that moment, a sovereign republic being attacked, or an "unruly territory" being administered.
A matter of restoring order. The semantic work being done by that phrase is staggering.
The entire 350 years of Dutch colonisation of Indonesia was being framed as part of commercial activities, a corporate excess.
The violence was outsourced to a company, the profits were nationalised into a ✨Golden Age✨, and the rebranding has been running ever since.
And a Dutch man in Bali in 2026 experiences a travel epiphany about the structural privilege "he's taken for granted" 😢💔
It's his entire conscience that he's taken for granted, actually, in favour of the common sense shaped by the Dutch garbage ruling class. Get out of our land, coloniser. Please choke, respectfully. 💀
I've said this before, and I'll say it again and again. The Dutch are not h8d enough.

BIRTHDAY MONTH'S ESSENTIALS $375+ DEADLINE 16/06/2026
May's goal didn't meet, but I'm not carrying that forward into June, because Alhamdulillah I didn't d!e. I made the money stretch by eating less, forgetting to eat, and forgetting to take care of myself😹👍🏻
June minimum for basic survival: $375
($250 groceries, $90 utilities + water, $35 internet + phone data)
This is before meds, and before the building maintenance fee landing this month. With IDR continuing to collapse against the dollar, I'm hoping the $375 covers the maintenance invoice too. I genuinely don't know yet.
It's also my birthday month. I'd really like to spend it not thinking about whether I can afford groceries. That would be nice.
Monthly pledges are the most sustainable way to support this. One-off contributions also help. Sharing this post costs nothing and extends reach beyond exhausted circles.
This keeps me fed, medicated, and able to sustain the mutual aid infrastructure and writing I've been building. The work continues either way. It's just harder when I'm hungry.

It's getting tiring that some people think I'm always acting weird and so unfunny when I "suddenly" make everything about politics, and they always try to humble me when I "get too serious suddenly". First off, I'm sorry that you thought it was an act and that I was unfunny. I 𝘢𝘮 weird; let's get the facts straight, okay? And my humour was forged in the core of a dying star for the first three decades of my life; that's where I grew up abused and severely traumatised. We are not the same.
Second, I'm sorry you've been so sheltered and comfortable with constantly looking away from what I've been through and ignoring what I've always yapped about that my being political seems like a new character development to you. Take all the time you need to process this. Wait until you hear about how I survived being ostracised by my classmates in uni at 18 and bullied in the workplace as an adult, though. But I will let you process this first. Don't feel rushed. I understand this is too much for you.
Third, do you live in real life? You think I'm pulling stand-up comedy in front of you? The fuck? The thing I "get too serious suddenly" about is the material conditions of real people in real life around us; where the hell do you think we are?
Look, I get it. I get that you're disappointed. To be fair, though, it's not my fault that I have rizz, okay? I know my presence unsettles you, and you're captivated when I talk. Why do you think I was ostracised in uni and bullied at work as a 26-year-old? Also, wait until you hear I was also active in da'wah in uni.
What the hell did you do in your youth that you got no organisational drama to that extent and my politics caught you off guard? God, it must've been so boring.
I'm attractive until you realise I have a functional brain and a sound mind, is that it?
And it's not my fault you can't help but rely on a "hijabi Muslim woman stereotype" and expect me to gentleparent you, while I won't hesitate to use my hijab pin as a self-defence weapon and scream bloody murder if you do so much as breathe wrong in my presence.
My entire life is literally what "don't let them figure out your next move" looks like.

I can’t believe I’m experiencing that inflation my grandma used to tell us about. Again.
The first time, I was 5 in 1998, when genocidal fascist Suharto was removed from office and left Indonesia with US$30 billion in IMF debt. Indonesia’s external debt itself was far larger, around US$140 billion by the end of 1997. That was when the rupiah’s exchange rate was lower than the current president’s morality.
But now?????
The rupiah is lower than the Mariana Trench, and somehow still not low enough to match his humanity.

MAY ESSENTIALS $560 DEADLINE 16/05/2026
I need to cover $560 for groceries, utilities, internet, and basic necessities after an April shortfall carried into May.
April’s goal was $625, but only $440 was met.
The minimum for April was $375, but only $190 was received for April essentials. The rest covered overdue March costs and groceries for the first weeks of April.
The remaining $185 groceries gap now carries into May.
🗒️ Breakdown:
$185 April groceries gap
$375 May basics
• $250 groceries
• $90 utilities + water
• $35 internet + phone data
If you’re able to help, please support today through the link in bio or by scanning the QR code. Monthly pledges are especially helpful due to disability and the constraints that come with it, but one-off support also helps greatly.
Even small contributions make a real difference toward food, bills, and staying connected online.
Sharing this post also helps greatly if financial support is not possible.
This support helps keep me fed, connected, and able to continue sustaining a global mutual-aid network with comrades organising across borders.
Every bit helps keep it going. Thank you.

I get what you mean, I really do. But the thing is, there has never been centuries-long propaganda against puppies. Puppies are always cute.
While what’s happening in the SWANA region— it has long been believed and accepted that only Muslims cared about it, all the while resources have been dedicated to painting people in that region as barbaric, backward, and everything related to that region as violent, just like Muslims. As a Muslim in a formerly colonised Muslim-majority nation in the global south, I did, at some point, believe nobody cared unless you’re somehow related to that place, either by blood or by faith. That was until Oct 7th, 2023.
TL;DR – Puppies = universally humanised.
SWANA/Muslims = historically dehumanised.
Therefore, the reaction gap ≠ simple moral failure, but manufactured perception.

Everything is political. The internet has no borders. “Online activist” is still an activist. Otherwise colonisers wouldn’t be paying influencers to push propaganda. So the real question is: how do we tell the difference between activists who happen to have reach, influencers who act as propagandists, and big creators whose power is purely parasocial?
