My wife used to drive a tractor trailer (53 feet) in NYC to deliver pallets of food. And had to navigate between park cars, unaware foot traffic, speeding cyclists, and angry drivers trying to block her or unsafely cut her off.
Since she drove alone, she had to take chances without any help when trying to back up or turn or get into/out of driveways. The city is not for faint-hearted inexperienced drivers. Commercial drivers get a premium to deliver in NY because it's not designed for commercial traffic, and well, because of impatient aggressive New Yorkers. Boston is as bad, with tiny winding streets and lots of Massholes.
After that person's car gets smashed or sideswiped by a one-person city garbage truck with one person, tell them "you got what you wished for, and don't you dare sue the city and raise our taxes."

You cite a "boutique" firm as your source without disclosing its AI funding connections.
I read through, clicked on links, read on authors cited, read their available articles, clicked on their links...and found amateurish cherry picked data. Eg A citation about grid impacts in Virginia v Maine cited as defacto evidence that "Data center criticism is based on bad science...", without mention of the growing reliance on jet engine turbines running 24/7 and of that "alternative" energy costs on local communities vis a vis sustain noise pollution, air pollution, increased infrastructure use and degradation, transportation of fuel tankers with highly flammable fuel, etc. You don't get to erase relevant facts that inform the critique of data centers while decrying bad science.
I agree "Almond farms waste water" but they do produce (however inefficiently) food. I have yet to see how an AI google search on making pizza that directs the use of superglue on pepperoni slices "to keep them in place" provides substantial human benefit for its competing waste of needed human resources. Cherry picking invites cherry picking. But I don't claim to be a science journalist.

This is why I follow @nprofile…nvs0. Moxon can have exquisite clarity of thought, and puncture through toxic noise and ubiquitous mainstream sloganeering propaganda. "The Reframe" isn't simply a cute name, it's an active example of Critical Thinking. It's what we need in these times.
This is the best, clearest, most thoughtful articles on the toxic frame of "male loneliness - why aren't women fixing it" and "not all men are bad - women better stop choosing the bear" by a man. Into the unknown both hope and fear reside.
As a 3rd generation American, LGBTQ, person of color living in the very rural part of the likely bluest state, I don't experience the US as on the precipice of Civil War. However, I am not so sanguine that we won't end up there, anything is possible.
The US is a massive nation. I grew up on the farthest West state, Hawai'i, the newest state in the Union, and now live in one of the original and oldest states - Massachusetts. There are MAGA here, but they are outnumbered. Massachusetts is very blue. But because we are so geographically isolated, to survive, our local culture is a balance of self-sufficiency and interdependence both Blue and Red. Armed conflict would be an irrevocable breach of rural local identity. And because we are rural, lots of folks hunt and have guns, even Democrats. So if this devolves into armed conflict rural Blue New England won't go without a fight.
There are lots of serial flashpoints, and those get media, which is what you see overseas. But know this is Trump's standard - one flashpoint at a time, so far. Trump does not appear to have the troops, organization, discipline or ability to manage a national civil war. And no other fascist ambitious current MAGA leader has the engendered cult loyalty and charisma to trigger and win a Civil War.
I actually believe the opposite about Trump's power - I believe he peaked on July 4 2025 with his substantial budget bill destruction of significant parts of the US (w Congressional MAGA complicity) and his greatest win has actually triggered his downhill slide and he's is angry, desperate, in denial, fuminating and at his most chaotic dangerous recklessness as he tries to erase the inevitable fate that he is seeing awaits him. But time, gravity, and history are now his inescapable enemies. He will get worse, and his minions worsen, but he's no longer inevitable. You can see it in the those polls on his cratering popularity, and on the MAGA who are abandoning their Congressional seats. Corporate media here and over there are both trailing, not leading, indicators. They missed the trends that brought Trump to power, they are missing the trends that signal his end.

The bases for my protest are rooted in a mix of love, despair, fury, and hope for my country.
It's been angering to be continually mischaracterized by Trumpists and the cowed media as both weak and violent, as both hateful and meek, as humorless easily bullied stiffs.
What struck me about the inflatable frog protests was the realization why that was accidentally so powerful and resonant: We actually are the earnest, good neighbors who tried to live by example and teach our children and each other to welcome and respect our national diversity, to expect equality: our avatars (mocked, despised, and targeted by Trump) included a green banjo playing frog, a plus-sized pig, two suspiously loving best male friends, a grouch in a trash can, a tall gawky bird, Mr Rogers and his neighborhood, the anti-manosphere Barney...and we were stunned when the actually most humanly vulnerable of us were attacked with brutal force by Government armed, powerful, masked, vicious, sneering bullies who insisted we were powerless and they were inevitable.
Tomorrow we shall see. This will be the most critical demonstration of the power of Cooperative Game Theory, if we are massive enough. If, by sheer numbers we prove we are inevitable, and thus influence the sideliners (including media, colleges, military, business), by shoving that Overton window back to square with the force of history. When with the shockingly normal sane decent values of Sesame Street and Mr Rogers we rise together and say "We are inevitable, not you."
However each of us arrives tomorrow, we can change the trajectory of history and speed the coming inevitable decay of Trumpism.

I once said "When I was a little girl growing up in Hawai'i, I used to dream about the Mainland, it was so different from everything I knew, everything new and surprising, and this moment, here, with you, this is that fulfillment of my childhood's dreams. Thank you." She laughed and I got hired.
Later, I worked in senior management in HR, and watched hiring managers ask stupid questions they never actually listened to the answers to, and applicants waste time faking answers they thought were required. That's NOT the function of interviews. The interview should really be where less resume qualified but interesting applicants are given a shot, perfect resume applicants are tested (a surprising to me number are BS), and good candidates get to explain in person what their written narrative doesn't do justice. And for each applicant to suss work culture and decide if we meet their needs for whatever reason and for as long as they need, or if the written ad was just a lie.

I felt duly miserable, and never forgot the imagery. My mom, as a Shinto/Buddhist/Christian infused my childhood with the loving notion of everything in the natural world possessing a hidden spirit or kami deserving of notice and respect, so I thanked the stepping stones and trees and the winds. Seventy or so years later, I still talk to my own stone steps every day. She never knew a luna moth, but she would have been overjoyed.

I've been writing about this for years: 63% of ALL nursing home/long-term/skilled nursing facility (SNF) patients are entirely funded by Medicaid. This means SNFs WILL CLOSE, even for the 37% full pay, because 37% full pay is not enough to cover operating expenses and generate profit for a nursing home.
Be prepared to take care of grandma in your own home, families. To provide 24/7 care. To clean ports, to give injections, to lift from bed, to bathe and change, to toilet, to feed, to change diapers and soiled sheets and clothing, to puree or liquify food, and hand feed, to handle the bouts of screaming or violent outbreaks, or wandering, or crying, or despair, or insomnia, or begging for food after just eating, or the refusal to eat or take meds, the crazy accusations, the calls to police or 911, the choking, the falls, the pain, the not remembering who you are, the complaining... the desperation that no one else will help you.
This is what the draconian Trump cuts to Medicaid mean.
And if grandma's not in a SNF, where will she go to rehab before release to home when she cannot yet manage the Activities of Daily living: Eating, Bathing, Dressing, Toileting, Walking, Getting in and out of bed? Your home, your children's home... be prepared to quit your job to take care of grandma/grandpa, your elderly uncle or aunt...
Nursing homes do what families don't want to do, on the taxpayers' dollar. DOGE considers this waste, fraud, and abuse. Because they prioritize tax cuts to billionaires over regular American families.

We had a small protest today in our small town of 1100 people (530 households). It rained, and it was Saturday dump day, when our town transfer station is open for trash, recycling, and composting. We never have protests in our town. But we did, today.

Most Chancellors, and often most Presidents, are academics who chose a dual path as administrators. Faculty have power they refuse to use to support colleagues who are targeted and fired. Because they can't reach consensus to use the most important power they have to gut the power of administrators and trustees -- they can collectively refuse to teach, and dare the institution to terminate them.
No one applies to a university because of the VP for Administration, no alumni donate because of the Facilities Director or HR VP. Learning is the product and faculty are the means of production.
Faculty could be a profile in courage, but the most they can muster is a meaningless vote of "no confidence" in a President. And in refusing to act, they betray the trust of students and demonstrate why they are a faithless alternative.

It's why the best professional gamers do not rely on Starlink to compete internationally. Starlink's plus is scope of geographical coverage not it's speed or consistency.
But Trump wants to replace our current real-time air traffic control system with an unstable $tarlink satellite system. Verizon had the new $2.4B contract award to increase existing fiber bandwidth and improve current coverage provided by a different supplier (not Verizon or $tarlink.) But now Musk wants that $2.4B for himself. Sure, it's not like loss of signal or lag matters while planes full of people are in the air.

So, I love things about snow and snow storms. I have lived in a snow belt for almost a quarter century. We get the highest snow fall in the state.
I love how snowfall dampens sound. It changes the acoustics of our little valley. No one is out driving, except the huge town plow. I love that I can tell by the sound of the blade on the road - whether it's a high pitched scraping on asphalt or a lower pitched growl on a veneer of compacted snow - I can hear how fast he's going, how heavy the snow is, and therefore how much snow has fallen.
My favorite sound memory was when my neighbor used to have a sleigh, pulled by their huge draft horses wearing actual sleigh bells, with the muffled sounds of their footfalls in deep snow, their snorts and chest breaths, and the sleek glide of the runners. It was magical.
Winter sounds are worth a moment to listen to.

I think about the industrialists from Flick, IG Farben, and Krupp who profited from legal partipation in the Holocaust, and created the basis for International Criminal Law for crimes against humanity. Important to note: these industrialists had their rightful day in court, and were not gunned down on the street.
I have no idea what the solution is, but lack of accountability is no longer sustainable, and sadly, I fear, we will see more murders as aggrieved persons do what laws do not, and exact their own version of justice. The reckless pursuit of profit above all is meeting its moment.
