Good to see OpenAlex is investing in supporting systematic search, important for executing searches for systematic and scoping reviews: https://blog.openalex.org/openalex-api-new-features-and-usage-based-pricing/. It is getting better fast. Looking forward to search history ;-). And to publishers openly sharing paper abstracts via Crossref.

Very interesting post on the danger of abuse of DCMA anti-circumvention clause to silence critical video essays containing ripped video streams, severely limiting fair use rights. @npub1fdr…lvhs again making the most complex and 'boring' legal stuff crystal clear and actionable.

ingests into its index metadata of all publications with a DOI, and with its extension pack (xpac) now also metadata of publications deposited in institutional repositories and huge numbers of other materials with DOIs, such as datasets. Pubs without DOIs and not in repositories might still be missing.

The only options to follow what's going on at my own (Utrecht) university are through big US, Trump abiding commercial tech companies: Meta (Facebook, instagram), Alphabet (Youtube) and Microsoft (LinkedIn). OK, we ditched X, but that is not enough. Do you know examples of universities that do much better in this regard? What are the best practices? Can we have a thread here of institutions that (fully) moved to Mastodon, Peertube, ...? Also interested in their explicit motivations to do so.

would you have a link to more information? Would like to know what they did exactly, as that could inspire other cities.

if we do not like this we need to ditch #X, ditch #twitter, dump our #swasticars, stop using #genAI and above all support development of Starlink alternatives like #IRIS2, while discussing the importance of these steps with people we meet and while praising, fostering and funding any initiatives that are built on honesty, compassion and inclusive dialogue. Not looking away, not giving in.

Anyone aware of people having made a full copy of NASA''s 'Open Science 101' course? Though it says it is under maintenance, it seems to be down, probably really taken down by the new US administration?

What, according to your gut feeling, would be the approximation for federated social networks?

could you share any good examples already available or in the making? Isn't the problem that while chatting with a limited corpus can be useful, training needs to be on a wider corpus to be of high quality? And does the training of all those small instances together not deliver an even larger environmental footprint? I like to be convinced ;-)
