My new travelers company #journal arrived along with my #fountainpen. My first impression is that the pilot convertor cartridge is miserable to use. Like my god this thing sucks. But the ink is a beautiful plum, and the pen itself makes me happy.
I must admit that the packaging for the pen I didn't like. It's a cheap tin with a plastic window. Idk I feel like a cardboard box would feel more premium. Anyways the box is going in the bin asap because I think it sucks.
However. Dear God I love the ink.

Part of what renewed/sparked my interest in #fountainpens again, was #WitchHatAtelier and their use of pens and magic seals for magic. Like... look at this lovingly painted magic stationary shop! And yes they are dip pens... (but dip pens are a step too far in the way of impracticality when you don't have a desk of your own)...
Oh yeah I also adore the fuckoff huge tree in the middle of the store.

From the book of unkillable facts, a sort of in universe guide book of common sense things that nobody follows. I quite enjoy how Valente wraps self evident things in engaging prose. It sucks me in, just how she writes about things.
"If you make a person feel small, and stupid, and embarrassingly unlovable, if you make them feel like they're not worth seeing, if you do it on purpose, if you do it with intent, that person will, sooner or later, rip your and/or your whole societies face off and eat it with ice cream."

I'm now a solid third of the way through the book. While the stream of conscious narration is certainly pretty, it often leads to me getting lost. And it is wearing on me, having a stream of thoughts thrust on me rather than a plot.
But I am still enjoying myself.

I just started #reading #SpaceOddity by C. Valente and it's such a... Fun book. Her use of language is fun, and the way it states self evident things that makes you look at yourself and laugh is nice.

New ink day.
The fuyu-gaki is a wonderful orange red colour. I love it. It's so smooth in the parker. It's like writing on glass.
The Jacques Herbin is unfortunately disappointing. While I can smell a sense of some perfume from the ink, it also smells rather... Dead, like all the volatile compounds died two years ago. It's also very very scratchy in the Waterman: it makes me feel as if I'm using a quill.

I went to a cafe and did a bit of ideation about what new #ink to buy for my new (old) fountain pen! I don't know if I want purple or red more. Purple would be more versatile. But red... Red kind of just feels like what I want to write with right now.

Something that lives rent free in my head is the post on the #fountainpen subreddit where people were roasting this one guy for having a collection of expensive pens.
Sure the pens are expensive. But... A lot of hobbies are? Take for instance hiking. Hiking can be done cheaply, with second hand gear. But a lot of the dream expeditions, take a lot of time and planning (transport, organizing, paying for training, etc)... But more than that, money.
So why did people feel the need to hate on the guy who bought expensive fountain pens? If I had the money I totally would too (well not quite. I'd probably spend it on shoes first (looking at you trickers). Is it because collecting pretty things is somehow less worthy a way of spending money?
And it's pretty fucking hilarious. When even a basic Lamy safari is 40x the cost of a Bic pen, does the same job... And even though you can refill the ink... Over a lifetime of use, you are never going to save money compared to the Bic.
And let's be honest. Who here has ever stopped at a Lamy Safari?

#fountainpens I went to a local arts and crafts fair and saw this fountain pen display. The guy behind it said that if I wanted a pen made custom I could give him a call and he'd see what he could do. I especially loved the antler pen, and also the cases for the pens. So beautiful.

The problem with #fountainpens is that I spend as much time browsing second hand listings for them as I do actually writing.
Maybe the solution to that is to only buy a new pen once I've actually filled my black notebook with notes and sketches. Maybe.
Might be some good motivation to write....

So yesterday I was doing some quasi retail therapy: I was bidding on a cool fountain pen. I saw it, thought it was cool, put a bid on it.
Did some more research, realised that bringing it up to working condition would be more involved than I initially thought (60's lever fill).
So it was with some relief that I woke up this morning and learned I was outbid.
