SmartOS: The illumos Way of Thinking About Servers
A practical look at SmartOS, illumos, zones, LX compatibility and the way this operating system approaches servers. Not a complete guide, just enough to understand why I like it.

Dear friends of the #illumosCafe,
until now, I haven't been able to upgrade this instance to 4.6 (and then 4.7), even if I kept it patched with the (supported) 4.5.x releases.
Now: compiling and running Mastodon on illumos isn't that trivial and my notes for 4.4 and 4.5 don't seem to work with 4.6. There are some other issues I'll sort out.
But don't worry: I'll still upgrade it quite soon. I'll just switch to a LX zone until I'll have sorted it out on native zones.
Stay tuned!

I had to close the registrations to the Illumos Cafe as a strong spam wave is happening here, too.

I'm performing some tests of #illumos based distributions on some of the VPS providers I'm generally using.
Each of them has some "quirks and features". More about this in the coming days.

I think it's time to write an #introduction for this account as well!
I'm Stefano Marinelli, Barista of the illumos Cafe and the BSD Cafe. I'm a technology and open source enthusiast, a strong advocate for #OwnYourData, and against computer monoculture, even when it comes to open source solutions.
I've been active in the #Fediverse for years and am a firm believer in it. I decided to found this Cafe to bring the positive spirit of the BSD Cafe to curious and passionate users of #illumos based operating systems (#OmniOS, #SmartOS, #Tribblix, #OpenIndiana, etc.).
I'll mainly use this account for content related to this instance and illumos-based operating systems, while my account at the BSD Cafe - @npub1ef5…gcpc - remains my primary one.
For more information about the illumos Cafe, you can read the introductory post here: https://it-notes.dragas.net/2025/08/18/introducing-the-illumos-cafe/
