Good morning Fedi friends.
Is anybody curious about how the #WSocial experiment is going?
You know, the private, for profit "European answer to X" endorsed by the European Commission, which is a fork of Bluesky and has quietly gone closed-source before its beta launch (à la #TruthSocial)?
I've got numbers for you!
Nearly two months in, W Social has almost the same number of accounts as #Eurosky... You know, the European fork of Bluesky that does NOT require government IDs to post.
W Social: 23.5k accounts
Eurosky: 24.8k accounts
In order to post on W Social you need to provide your government ID and go through a 13-step verification process. So far 4.5k accounts are verified but only 2036 (as of this morning) have ever published a single post or reply.
There is a handy website - https://pdsls.dev - that allows you to monitor the "firehose" of any ATproto-powered PDS.
Inspired by @nprofile…eh3u and his awesome videos (example: https://mu.social/profile/palle.eurosky.social/post/3mskkqrrc522l) I have been comparing the live activities of the two networks.
The difference is SHOCKING.
W Social is largely a zombie, dormant network, with a high number of accounts that do not interact. Eurosky by contrast shows very lively activity.
The screenshot I grabbed yesterday shows a side-by-side comparison of their firehose over a 27 minute period.
W Social had a total of 240 events (follows, likes, posts...) whereas Eurosky registered 7596 events in the same time interval.
A couple of days ago I downloaded their PDS and saw that 67,8% of their accounts have 0 follows, 0 followers and 0 posts. That's what I mean when I call it a "zombie network."
W Social's CEO says they plan to start monetizing by introducing ads in 2027.
WITH THESE NUMBERS?!?
Sure Jan.
I love how with the transparency of open data you can't really use the standard playbook of CEO hype and hubris. Because we can all see their numbers. And they are BAAAAD.
I have been feeling very strong second hand embarrassment for the European Commission and especially Ursula von der Leyen - who went so far as to publicize the W launch in between G7 meetings in June. I wonder how they feel about it... and if they are even aware of how badly the network is doing right now.
I suspect the network can be on life support for a year or two but things aren't looking good.
Thought you should know!
For my series of articles about W Social, check out: https://blog.elenarossini.com/tag/w-social/ I may have another one coming in the fall...

Dear Fedi friends,
It may be time for a re-introduction: I'm Elena, an Italian creative (writer, photographer, filmmaker) living in Paris, France.
You may have initially gotten to know me for my advocacy for the Fediverse (like my Fedi intro video: https://blog.elenarossini.com/fediverse-video/ or my blog or my Fediverse stock photo). So, you may have been a bit confused lately, over all my critical posts about the new network W Social. Why do I keep bringing it up?
I believe that W Social - and its required, companion app W Identity - are an existential threat to the Fediverse. So I'm fighting tooth and nail to oppose and resist them.
Why? The European Commission has enthusiastically embraced this new hard fork of Bluesky that requires age verification. Even Ursula von der Leyen advertised the launch of W Social in between G7 meetings last week.
I have MOUNTAINS of evidence of poor planning, extremely lax security, use of U.S. Big Tech platforms for something that purports to be "based in Europe, for the world."
Why is it a threat for the Fediverse? The only way to make sense of the European Commission's embrace of this platform is that maybe it sees it as a trial run for MANDATORY age verification for social media across the European Union.
No Fediverse app has infrastructure in place to comply. And if a mandate is introduced, it would spell the end of the open social web and internet anonymity... like Chat Control, but basically killing the Fediverse.
I find it EXTREMELY disturbing to see the enthusiastic embrace of W Social by the European Commission. It took them YEARS to change their website footer and add Mastodon and Bluesky instead of X. In the span of 5 weeks, they replaced the Bluesky logo (a butterfly) with the "W" from W Social.
All my posts about W Social from last week went viral. My articles have been quoted in articles in French, Dutch and German news sites (https://blog.elenarossini.com/tag/w-social/).
I have held back from sharing more evidence I found because I don't want to appear like a bully who promotes pile-ons. I'm a nice, sweet person, I promise! I take ZERO pleasure in writing about W Social, but I have unwittingly become an expert on them - after researching them for 5 months. So here I am.
I will keep investigating them. If you don't want to hear about this topic anymore - I would understand - you can mute the hashtags #Wsocial and #DubyaSocial (that's a pretty apt way to describe them IMHO).
Peace out.

Dear Fedi friends,
You know how grateful I am for your help and expertise. I have a burning question and I know some of you may have the correct answer.
Long story short, I had been doing a deep dive into #WSocial. My exposé published on Friday got 830 retweets!
I am working on a follow-up piece and there's something I don't understand.
The homepage of W Social is now redirecting - from wsocial.eu to wsocial.news
If I put wsocial.news in WHOIS databases, I'm finding very little information about when it was registered. And there's some odd stuff, like showing an IP address in Washington DC - but they are very adamant of being hosted in Europe... and they use bunny.net (Slovenia). What gives?

Sad to see that mastodon.social is under a DDoS attack... but as @nprofile…msu5 wrote, the beauty of the fediverse is that there are thousands of independent instances chugging along.
This includes my little self-hosted corner of the Fediverse running #GoToSocial 🪴
This is what TRUE decentralization looks like. And I LOVE it and I'm forever grateful for it :fediverse: :ActivityPub:

#AskFedi: is there a script / way to automate the restart of dnsmasq every 24 hours… on a VPS that runs on Debian 12?
(Funny how this would have sounded like a foreign language to me a mere year ago) 😆

So yesterday I bought @nprofile…x373's amazing zine "How DNS works."
My printer somehow messed up the job and ended up printing LOTS of extra copies... my 5-year-old saw pages lying around and asked if she could use them. I said sure.
She's been coloring them for the past 10 minutes and asked me who made the illustrations. I said "Julia Evans". My child asked me: "Are you friends?" and I had to explain to her that no, we are not friends. Sick burn from my child: "Why?" and "I have more friends than you. 26 at school!"
Then: "Which language is this in?" and "Can you translate what it says?"
So I have the honor of explaining DNS to my child.
And now she's expressly asking me to send the photo of her coloring to Julia. So here it is, with Julia tagged since she has DMs muted from people she doesn't follow 😅

THIS IS A POST IN PRAISE OF SNAPSHOTS.
My PeerTube upgrade was a horror show: lost server connection during the upgrade and then PeerTube was automatically removed from my YunoHost server... the routine backup by YunoHost of PeerTube didn't restore... in short: bad, very bad outcome.
I hyperventilated for a few minutes and then... hit "Restore" on the VPS snapshot I had captured before the maintenance operation and... everything went back to normal.
Heart still beating a little fast but I am in AWE of the powers of SNAPSHOTS, ouf.

The first ten minutes I spent on social media this morning made me feel all kinds of things. Why is it that people who routinely use LLMs are so loud and brash and proud, making these tools appear as essential and inevitable?
A post by a dev whose app I use said something along the lines of: "no use exercising your coding skills, AI is too good now, you can't compete with it anyway".
Another post by a user on an instance I try to engage with wrote - literally: "tired of overthinking every decision?" and then disclosed he had created an AI that will "run a weighted decision matrix so you don't have to." In all seriousness.
What is this dystopian world where human qualities are devalued, critical thinking is discarded and surveillance capitalism is ignored at the altar of AI worship?
If they are loud and proud, maybe so I can be too... but in the opposite direction.
This weekend I will start the MIT's Missing Semester class (the 2020 Lectures, so pre-AI) because in this brave new world hyping up techno-fascist LLMs, knowing the basics of code are essential IMHO.
So my March "project" will be a deep dive in MIT's Missing Semester and my April project will be off-grid mesh radio communication.
What about you, what are you doing to resist?
Special props to @nprofile…5876 @nprofile…7yuj and @nprofile…u7p7 for being outspoken on these issues... you're my beacons of hope

Dear Fedi friends,
The normalization of "vibe coding" in certain environments is pushing me in the exact opposite direction.
I, a normie (ok maybe a semi-technical person), would like to learn some basic computer programming*.
I need some advice about where to start because I'm a little clueless in this regard. Maybe it will help to share my goals, so that you can tailor your advice:
1) I'd like to become much more proficient using CLI... so that one day for example I could migrate a #YunoHost app to a new server without breaking anything
2) I'd like to be able to confidently run remote backups with rsync
3) Security: I need to learn how to turn my VPS or Raspi into a fortress
4) Eventually I'd like to learn #FreeBSD
Where does one even start?
I'm based in Paris, France, speak French, English and Italian, but remote learning is preferable because my child is in school only 4 days a week and has 2-week holidays every 6 weeks of school (thanks to the French educational system, don't ask me).
I'm super motivated to learn all these things, I just don't know where to start.
*Edit: maybe I'm just dreaming of becoming a proficient sysadmin

@nprofile…u7p7 tragic indeed... because on the surface it reflects badly on the Fediverse as a whole... but in reality there should have been more planning about how to build and nurture connections in their community (not to mention moderation and sustainability). Sigh 😭

Question to #FediAdmins #MastoAdmins:
How would you qualify a Mastodon instance that has 10k accounts but only 63 original posts (not counting replies) in a 24 hour span?
Yes, this is a post about theForkiverse.com ... I'm trying to gauge how active it is, what its future may be...
One of its admins / mods (Kevin) hasn't posted anything since January 24th and it's disappointing if this turns out to be another high profile example of a hyped up Fediverse instance that quickly fizzles out 😭
On my end, I've been trying to interact (via my Mastodon account) with people on that instance to make them feel seen and valued.
But the lack of activity by its members and admins is a cause for concern, sigh.
I thought this was only me but then this morning I saw this toot by a member of that instance: https://theforkiverse.com/@NotYours/116147206887032255
Thoughts?

#DeltaChat experimentations and questions
I attempted to install Delta Chat on my Pixel 9 running GrapheneOS and I couldn't get the QR code pairing to work.
So I attempted the "restore from backup" method and it worked seamlessly and instantaneously.
Since Delta Chat doesn't require a phone number or an email address, I wonder what are the best practices to ensure you don't lose access to your account? (In case you lose your main phone)?
I have it set up on my iPhone, on my second phone running GrapheneOS, on two Macs in Paris and now on a MacMini in Italy... so 5 devices in total.
How often do you run backups? Shall I do them every week? Any other advice to share?

"A resistance fighter understands that technology must never be accepted as part of the natural order of things, that every technology— from an IQ test to an automobile to a television set to a computer — is a product of a particular economic and political context and carries with it a program, an agenda, and a philosophy that may or may not be life-enhancing and that therefore require scrutiny, criticism, and control. In short, a technological resistance fighter maintains an epistemological and psychic distance from any technology, so that it always appears somewhat strange, never inevitable, never natural."

I've just published the third installment in my blog series about self-hosting with #YunoHost, showing (with plenty of screenshots and detailed explanations) how to install #NextCloud.

If I were a digital rights activist, I would see this time as a golden opportunity.
#Grok, the #AI "assistant" powered by Musk's xAI, has become an engine of non-consensual image and video generation at a mass scale - including pornographic and pedopornographic content. Creating and distributing this imagery has never been quicker or easier. All one has to do is reply to an image posted by someone on X with a mention of Grok and a prompt. This feature was restrained recently but people who pay an $8 subscription to X can still do it. As Sam Cole writes on @nprofile…0jjs : "Masterful Gambit: Musk Attempts to Monetize Grok's Wave of Sexual Abuse Imagery" https://www.404media.co/x-premium-grok-paywall-images-ai-generator/
How many politicians pushing for #ChatControl are still using X? How many official government accounts? You know, the same people who screamed WE NEED TO PROTECT THE CHILDREN and pushed for the scanning of all digital communications and files (including E2EE encrypted ones) of European citizens? An "Orwellian nightmare" as @nprofile…0hde wrote on Privacy Guides: https://www.privacyguides.org/articles/2025/09/08/chat-control-must-be-stopped/#act-now
In the Privacy Guides article by Em, the French, Portuguese, Spanish, Italian and Irish governments (amongst many others) were in full support of Chat Control. As far as I can tell, prominent politicians, Prime Ministers and official government accounts from these countries are still posting on X.
Is there anything we can do to point out the hypocrisy? Or have the abuse machine that is Grok sanctioned and fined? And - this is key - use this horrible incident to push politicians to FINALLY quit X? It's about time.

I’m sharing this anecdote because it shows how it is important to speak up. Each one of us can make a small difference.
Discussion about the kidnapping of Maduro last night at dinner with my extended family. General consensus: it’s the law of the strongest, it should be expected.
Meanwhile, me: it’s incredibly dangerous to normalize these actions and accept them. This is not normal… if we change the baseline of what a country can do in the international stage, then that country will take the lack of reactions as a sign… and do something even more shocking in the future. People shrugged and said “we see your point but it is what it is”. Still, I like to think I planted some seeds in their minds regarding the dangers of normalizing extrajudicial actions like what happened yesterday.
Then: two people at the table had their hands glued to their cell phones looking up facts on LLMs like ChatGPT, Gemini and Mistral.
So I had to have my saying about the dangers of using LLMs as search engines, their biases and real objectives. I spoke of the loss of critical thinking and… got eye rolls. But an adult at the table (70+) agreed with me.
Then I suggested that people relinquish their cell phones… and put them on a coffee table in the other side of the room so we could have a conversation without the internet - or LLMs - getting in the way.
More eye rolls and protests… but everyone eventually agreed… except for a 22 year old who protested “how can I get my facts?”… and put her cell phone in her pocket. So for another hour we all talked face to face without anyone scrolling or looking things up on LLMs.
Maybe it’s because I’m an only child but I’m not afraid to speak my mind… even when my opinion isn’t the popular one and I appear to be the “wet blanket” of the family.
Speaking up is important.
These are dark, difficult times but we can all resist.

Good morning Fedi friends!
I'm currently in the east of France visiting extended family.
We're snowed in, everyone in the house is still asleep and I'm in the kitchen, near the fire, sipping coffee and setting up a new self-hosted app: #Umami (a privacy-respecting website analytics app).
How long did it take me to connect my 3 websites? 5 minutes.
Thank you #YunoHost for making all this possible!

My last #mysocalledsudolife action of 2025 is... downloading the FreeBSD handbook.

🏕️ my adventures in self-hosting: day 365 (milestone edition) 🎂
Good morning Fedi friends!
Feeling a little emotional today as I reflect back on one year of #selfhosting.
This toot from December 17 2024 shows off my excitement over signing up for my first VPS and installing #YunoHost: https://mastodon.social/@_elena/113667636910565210
If you check out the full thread you can see some of the challenges I faced in the early days. It's only been a year but it feels like a lifetime ago. When I read back, I think: who was this person? _ (task) is so easy! Like, why be scared of tweaking DNS records? 😅
I will write about the highs and lows in a proper blog post. Spoiler alert: there were mostly HIGHS ☺️
For now, I want to express my gratitude to:
✨ @nprofile…gvg3 who encouraged me by saying (I'm paraphrasing) "go for it, you learn by doing things"
✨ @nprofile…t52l who recommended I check out YunoHost (I had never heard of it before)
✨ :YunoHost: @nprofile…hksq for empowering me to self-host so many great FOSS tools... and upgrading and maintaining them in a super easy way
✨ @nprofile…cuz9 for helping me test my first self-hosted app (this #GoToSocial account)
And thank you to all the sysadmins and programmers who have helped me troubleshoot problems this year. I found that tech support on the Fediverse takes less than a minute 🥰
I'm really #GratefulForYou 💖

Currently writing a self-hosting guide for newbies, showing off the beauty and ease of #YunoHost.
Part 1 was really popular - beyond my expectations - with 1500+ unique visitors. Thank you!
For reference:
Part 2 (step-by-step installation and post-installation) will be super visual. I tried to keep things simple but I still have 27 - yes TWENTY-SEVEN - screenshots. I'll keep #AltText relevant to each step on a need to know basis or else it will turn into a novel... and will be too overwhelming for people using screen readers.
Aiming to get it published by Wednesday AKA the one year anniversary of the start of my own self-hosting adventures with YunoHost.
This is the guide I wish I had had back in the day... I would have started A LOT sooner. I'm basically writing it to my old self, hoping it will be useful for others 🥹

Disclaimer: I find it a little tacky to talk about metrics on the Fediverse. That is NOT why I am here.
BUT! It's worth saying out loud that I found a real community here that I am immensely grateful for.
The lack of algorithms - a mysterious black box determining which posts get seen - is a big bonus to me...
I spend hours writing articles... that people now REALLY read (unlike on Big Tech platforms, where my blog posts would be seen by 3-4 people because... god forbid you include a link to an external site. And that includes Bluesky, too).
Thank you for making me feel seen and heard and valued here ❤️
Ghost v.6 has new metrics built in... I was shocked to see the number of visitors to my first post about YunoHost: 955!
So even if I find it tacky to discuss numbers, this is not to brag. My main intention is to dispel any myths about Big Tech platforms... writers and creatives often say that they HAVE to be on X or Instagram or TikTok because that's where their audience is. Well, all Big Tech platforms have finicky, mysterious algorithms. I was on Twitter for 14+ years and none of my links ever got 955 visitors in 12 hours. So I wanted to put this out here to say:
ANOTHER WAY IS POSSIBLE.
And it's even better than the old way.
Real community. Real engagement. Without surveillance capitalism.
What's not to love about this?

Dear Fedi friends,
I just hit "publish" on my blog post "A newbie's guide to #selfhosting with #YunoHost. Part 1: reasons + requirements". It's here if you wanna read it:
This guide is intended for true newbies who are curious about self-hosting some essential digital services. I'm hoping to dispel some myths about self-hosting and make it appear accessible to all. Well, at least to people curious about it but hesitant to get started because they think it's too complicated. That was me up to a year ago.
Special thanks and shout-out to @nprofile…t52l for setting my journey in motion. And eternal gratitude to @nprofile…hksq for the way they are empowering us all with the tools to self-host

Working on the second draft of my "self-hosting for newbies" guide (part 1 of 4 that is) and it’s hilarious how many side notes I’m putting in for sysadmins.
They may be triggered by reading it… but hey it’s a guide meant to be for TRUE NEWBIES, I need to keep things simple and accessible 😅
I still know very little but it’s a miracle to see the things I manage to self-host (eternal gratitude to @nprofile…hksq)

@nprofile…szwu That’s great!
Yes we have that approach too at home but there is vulgar language… and extremely rude vulgar language (like - your mom) which I’m not really fond of explaining my child yet because (a) she’s only 4 (b) she weaponizes things that create strong reactions in us.. so… a couple of years down the line maybe 😅

2025-12-05 08:43:47 GMT

On our way to pre-school this morning in Paris my 4-year-old and I witnessed quite a scene.
An irate driver with his windows down was screaming vulgar insults at the top of his lungs… seemingly directed at a man on the sidewalk. Mind you, at 8:30am.
The entire neighborhood seemed to freeze to look at what was going on.
The driver kept repeating a super vulgar insult (« … ta mère » / « … your mom ») followed by « I see you, don’t pretend you didn’t see me ».
Now, my 4-year-old has:
an incredible memory
a very fine ear because she’s fully bilingual
After this man’s loud shouts (near us, too), she kept asking me: « mom what is he saying? »
I had to do some quick thinking to save the day and prevent her from saying the same thing out loud.
Now, since the most vulgar part of the insult sounds exactly like « Nick » (the name), I told my little one: « oh the driver is mad at the man on the sidewalk right there. They know each other. He’s saying Nicola, Nick, I know your mom! Stop doing bad things or else I will tell her. »
It worked.
« He knows his mom? »
« Yes! And he’s saying if he doesn’t behave he will tell his mom. »
She just… bought it. Huge sigh of relief right there.
Yes sure, it’s a white lie - sorry - but I have heard a fair amount of small children saying horribly vulgar things (on the bus, subway, at the park) and I’ll seize any chance I get to prevent this for my little one.
I’ll happily take my little win of the day.
PSA: please don’t use vulgar language in front of children, they’re like sponges 🥲

#GrapheneOS PSA
I've seen a lot of social media posts going around claiming things about #GrapheneOS and the French government that I simply could not verify. Lots of misleading news headlines too.
I'd like to take this opportunity to hopefully bring some clarity... from the POV of a new GrapheneOS user in France, who cares deeply about the project.
Here are the facts - as far as I can tell.
The French newspaper Le Parisien published an article about GrapheneOS on November 19th which was filled with inaccuracies and boasted that GrapheneOS was a safe haven for drug traffickers.
The GrapheneOS team was alarmed about the headline and reactions... and decided they no longer felt safe operating servers in France. So they terminated their OVH server contract / usage... and moved their servers overseas, mostly outside of Europe.
French GrapheneOS users can still use it. I installed it last Friday and see regular updates...
I haven't seen any official French government announcements about police/officials going after GrapheneOS - as far as I can tell.
Please feel free to correct me if I got anything wrong!
I just see a lot of fearmongering going around and I hope this won't dissuade people from using it. Its sandboxed profiles and advanced security settings (automatically turning off Wifi and Bluetooth for example) are really amazing.

Good morning Fedi friends!
I set up my alarm at 6:20am - as usual - to have at least an hour to myself before the little one wakes up. Yes, even on a Sunday.
I looked up videos about how to flash LineageOS on my Nexus 7 (2012)... And discovered a charming tutorial about TWRP recovery loader... done by a kid - I'm guessing in his early teens - some 8 years ago. The kids are alright!
If my little one started making videos about jailbreaking devices / installing custom ROMs 10 years from now, I would be so proud ☺️
Anyway, wishing you all a great day!

Hello Fedi friends,
I'm currently planning my written tutorial for #YunoHost - from the POV of a newbie.
The guide will have a simple but ambitious goal: to encourage non-technical people to try self-host their own #NextCloud instance... and show them that it's something accessible to all, thanks to the wonderful https://YunoHost.org
I have tried other similar tools and YunoHost IMHO is simply the best and most secure solution. I've been using it for 11 months now and I have ZERO complaints. It just works... and it's effortless.
I'm thinking of splitting my written tutorial in a 3-part series... because doing everything in one go for a non-technical person could be overwhelming.
Part 1: registering a domain name and signing up for a VPS*
* yes I know technically you could forgo a domain name but I think having one is more empowering long term... and I'd go the VPS route because it's the most headache-free for a newbie. I can do the whole thing in 12 minutes with a VPS... and experienced headaches with a Raspi. I think for a total newbie the VPS is the way to go... especially if we factor in security issues. The stakes are lower
Part 2: installing YunoHost and tweaking DNS settings (assigning domain for NextCloud and creating a subdomain for YunoHost admin stuff, etc.)
Part 3: installing NextCloud (which people voted for when I asked which app I should install in my tutorial) and seeing what it can do.
Thoughts?
Is a 3-part series overkill or ok? I'd like to encourage people to set aside 30 minutes a day for this, so that the whole thing is not too overwhelming.
Eager to hear what you think about this!

Good morning Fedi friends and happy Monday!
Since I haven't done much self-hosting-wise lately (more on this another time) I decided to... jailbreak my old Kindle(s)!
I was a little terrified to be honest. But the whole process took LESS THAN A MINUTE.
So after my spare Kindle (a 5th gen from 2012), I'm on to my main one (a 4th gen from 2011, my oldest gadget that I still use daily).
Later this week I will "liberate" my audiobooks!
Wishing you all a great day and week 😎

I need to figure out how I can set up a self-hosted system to sell my documentary The Illusionists.
Sure, I could host it on PeerTube and add all kinds of foreign language subtitles there... but I need a solution to generate unique URLs for everyone who purchases a 48-hour streaming license... all this to avoid piracy of course.
Yes I know the Fediverse loves 🏴‍☠️ but how can we independent filmmakers survive?
I've been using a mainstream platform to sell my film and they have just been bought by an infamous company, so I want to decamp ASAP.
I would love your suggestions.
And no, services that offer to sell digital products won't work because it's a 90 minute film that requires subtitles for many so the viewer needs to see it on an online platform that displays subtitles.

Dear Fedi friends,
I'm in a bit of a pickle and I could use your brilliant advice.
Long story short, I need to wait an extra 24 hours before attempting to set up Jellyfin on my Raspi (waiting for gear to arrive).
I thought: maybe I could try a low tech / oldie solution first. I have my entire music library super well organized in iTunes (RIP). It's on an old Macbook Pro (2011) connected to an external drive. I can play all the tracks from that computer. I just resurrected my iPhone 6 (capacity: 64GB) to repurpose it as an iPod. My entire music library is 'only" 40GB so the iPhone could hold it all.
Only problem: iTunes on my Macbook Pro does not recognize the iPhone 6. I keep getting error messages when trying to connect to it. I suspect the firmware is too old (on the Mac / too new on the iPhone)... I could not even wipe the iPhone with that old Mac because it couldn't connect to the Apple servers.
The iPhone 6 is completely empty and has iTunes! (Not Apple Music but actual iTunes). It even filled with some tracks I had bought (not sure how).
What would you do in this situation? Are there any workarounds?
My old Macbook Pro is running iOS version 10.8.5 and iTunes is on version 12.0.1.26.
My iPhone 6 (wiped clean and re-associated to my Apple ID) is running software version 12.5.7.
Apple discontinued iTunes support years ago in favor of Apple Music and streaming subscriptions (no wonder, because 💰💰💰💰💰).
I wish I could put my entire music library on my iPhone 6, le sigh. I technically wouldn't even need Jellyfin.
I also have an iPod Touch (1gen) that may connect to my Macbook Pro but its capacity is only 16GB.
What would you do?

2025-11-04 09:05:00 GMT

My plans for the week:
▪️ install #DietPi on my old #RaspberryPi3 (https://dietpi.com)
▪️ flash the #YunoHost pre-installed disk image to a new MicroSD card and attempt to set it up on on my #RaspberryPi5
▪️ if I'm successful, I'll set up #Jellyfin on it
▪️ create a little storage system for my microSD cards so I can swap them in and out (I won't wipe the one that has #Ubuntu on it, but set it aside so I can use it in the future)
I have a hunch I will ask 🎅 for a new Raspi this coming Christmas... maybe the #RaspberryPi500 😅

Dear Fedi friends,
If you can set aside 11 minutes today, I highly encourage to watch @nprofile…akdl's latest video: "I stream nothing, and I am happy."
It is ABSOLUTELY BRILLIANT and should be shown in media literacy and digital literacy classes everywhere. Actually, everyone should watch it (I'm about to send it to my family and friends).
My favorite part comes up towards the end. Veronica eloquently explains (9 min 27 sec in):
"I feel like we owe it to ourselves and to those who follow us to try and break free of algorithms, which tell us what we should like, who we should believe, and how we should feel about it.
It may sound melodramatic and maybe it is, but I see the increased dependence on algorithmically-driven entertainment as a symptom of that larger problem: uber-convenience that separates us from our critical thinking.
We're learning to abandon reason for small decisions, and wouldn't you know it, now it's easier to ignore reasons for the larger ones.
I'm not here to tell you what to think. I was raised in a "mind-your-own-damn-business" household and that's where my head is at. But I do want to implore all of us to think critically about how streaming media, autoplay, and the algorithm are impacting us."
I'm super proud to be a backer of her Patreon and I cannot thank her enough for this incredible video... which comes at the perfect time, as I was already planning to set up #Jellyfin next week.
If you can, join me in supporting Veronica's work here: https://www.patreon.com/VeronicaExplains

Good morning Fedi friends and happy Saturday! 🌈
File under: I'm such a clown sometimes. I did something extremely foolish yesterday (installation-wise) that bricked my whole YunoHost with Sharkey instance. This is not the fault of YunoHost or Sharkey, it's just me being the biggest airhead.
So this morning I nuked that VPS (Hetzner makes it so easy to start and stop) and, armed with a stopwatch, I wanted to see how long it would take me to order a new server, log in, install YunoHost and set up a main URL and a subdomain to log in.
I had this unique challenge that we're going hiking in the mountains so my time is very limited this morning.
How long did it take me? A grand total of 14 minutes.
The perks of being a fool is that you repeat the steps so many times that you go from being terrified (what do I have to do now?) to just sailing through the steps.
Time went like this:
1m30s: logged onto Hetzner, ordered a new server (Debian v12)
4m50s in: logged in, increased security, ran apt update and apt upgrade
5m in: installed YunoHost (thanks #curl)
7m30s in: with YunoHost successfully installed, I got into their beautiful graphical interface to continue the post install
9m30s in: post installation complete
11m 20s in: began tweaking DNS records for the main domain and the logging in subdomain, installed certificates, etc.
14m23s = all done, tripled checked that everything is working in incognito mode (it is) 🥳
Wishing you all a great day. Time to go hiking for me and my fam 🗻

Surreal (funny/tragic) conversations with My Child (I’ll use the MC abbreviation) who is 4 on the way to pre-school this morning.
The scene: I’m walking fast and she’s riding on her scooter. There is an older child (maybe 10yo) ahead of us. He’s walking alone with his head bent down looking at a smartphone and is completely unaware of the environment around him. He almost crashes into us because his eyes are glued to the smartphone.
MC: « Mom! Is he a child? And he has a phone?!? »
Me: « Yes. Some parents give phones to their children. It’s not very good for him not to look at the street while he walks. You know, experts say it’s not good to give children smartphones and parents should wait as long as possible. »
MC: « But YOU have a phone. »
Me: « Yes but I’m an adult. And I have self-restraint. It’s not good for children’s development. You should play, paint, read books…. Not look down at a screen. »
MC: « When can I have a phone? »
Me: « When you’re older we can give you a phone that only makes phone calls. »
MC: « They exist?!? »
Me: « What? »
MC: « Phones that only make calls? »
Me: 💀 « Yes my dear. You could even send text messages. »
MC: « Great! So I will send messages to M » (her best friend who just moved abroad)
I wish I could pause time 🥹

Good morning Fedi friends! It's only 7:30am but I have accomplished so much already this morning.
I woke up naturally at 5:50am... by 6:30am I was in the living room on my laptop, looking up #Tailscale tutorials. I set it up for my home system...
Now I'm off to shower before my little one wakes up. There's no pre-school on Wednesdays in France, only daycare for 3 hours in the morning, so I need to squeeze in work any way I can. An early rise worked out perfectly today. All this because I went to bed with the intention of reading a book - at 9:30pm - and fell asleep right away 😂
Wishing you all a lovely day!
And thanks for all the amazing recommendations you shared yesterday.
#MySoCalledSudoLife

2025-10-14 13:13:42 GMT

#AskFedi do you have recommendations for an external hard drive that would be good to stock #Jellyfin media on?
Something fast and not too expensive? (say, less than 200 Euros). 1 Terabyte of storage is more than enough (my current library is about 250 GB)...
I cannot use any of my current drives because they are all encrypted and #Jellyfin needs something with read access (sans password) for every folder in the path. So I'm going for a dedicated external drive.
I would really appreciate your advice! (and heads-up: I'm leaving home soon to pick up my little one from pre-school so I may take a while to reply) 😅

Good morning Fedi friends!
Rehearsing my #BerlinFediDay presentation this morning to make sure I can do it in 12 minutes tops…. Because I have a little surprise at the end, so I can’t use my full 15 minutes 😉
A tale of 2 rehearsals: back in May, when I was getting ready to present at #JDLL in Lyon I had to rehearse in the back of the car next to my 4-year-old… who was listening to children’s stories in French over the car system. For 4 hours. It was a marathon rehearsal for me, a real test of concentration.
I thought: easy for this one - I’m traveling alone in the plane, I’ve got a 90 minutes flight… so I can practice my speech in peace. Well, think again. My two French seatmates spent the entirety of the flight loudly discussing playing music gigs and their experiences with various drugs 😵‍💫
Which scenario did I prefer for prepping my speech? Neither one… thankfully I’ve got 2 hours in my hotel room now 😅
I look forward to meeting Fedi friends and followers later today and I hope I will do a good enough job conveying my love for the Fediverse.

I had an epiphany while walking with my daughter to the park this morning.
The number one reason why I would never resort to #AI / a #LLM to write something for me is that these models completely squash any individuality, the sum of all your life experiences and viewpoints. What makes you, *you*.
What I find so dangerous is the homogenization of thinking that they bring about. A pastiche of vanilla thoughts, cobbled together at random.
No LLM could possibly write for me... even if I used a prompt that asked it to write in my style, providing links to previous articles.
My little one is only 4 but it breaks my heart that she's growing up in a world where these tools are totally normalized. How they're upending higher education and so many aspects of life.
We didn't have a choice, the introduction of these tools arrived all of a sudden, without any guardrails in place. And now they're here.
When the time comes, we'll have this talk. I find it essential.

I was supposed to write a recap of the whole VPS fiasco and its aftermath... but I don't have the mental energy for it, to be honest.

Thoughts?

Dear Fedi friends,
Sometimes it's good to know when you need to call it a day. Today I ended my #sudo exploits at 10:00am... I'm mentally exhausted already... but happy about the progress I made.
I started tinkering with my new VPS at 7:30am and managed the following tasks:
- installed #fail2ban
- installed #Docker and checked if it was running successfully with their "hello world" method (it does)
- enabled remote access changing the listening port
- secured the connection with TLS
I wasn't able to create a new Docker context on Docker Desktop to point to my VPS... I ran into error messages about having to include certificates (with the right path)... so I decided to call it a day.
I wanted to end my Day 1 of Docker explorations on a good note.
I plan on writing about this on my blog later today so I can refer back to the steps later... when I actually install Docker on my VPS running Ghost.

Hello my name is Elena and I'm now the owner of 3 VPSs.
I just got a new cheap plan for 6-months to learn #Docker (on a brand new server that I can wipe if things go awry).
Fediverse what did you do to me? From 0 to 3 VPSs in 9 months.
On the bright side, this new passion is far cheaper than :LegoLogo:
Yes I sort of feel like a 🤡 right now.

I saw this screenshot on Reddit and felt compelled to share it here.
From Ms. Rachel, a content creator that makes videos for toddlers and small children (disclaimer: I haven't seen any but I hear she's very popular). A rare person in the public eye who has been speaking up for Palestinians:
It’s not complicated - over 18,000 Palestinian children have been killed.
It’s not complicated - Palestinian children are being starved to death.
It’s not complicated - Palestinian children are now the largest group of child amputees in modern history.
It’s not complicated - 17,000 Palestinian children are orphaned or separated from their parents.
It’s not complicated - there’s a new acronym WCNFSF - Wounded Child, No Surviving Family.
It’s not complicated - Silence is a choice. And it’s the wrong one.

Hello Fedi friends,
Please stage an intervention. This is a special “my adventures in self-hosting - 🤡 edition” toot.
So I need to learn #Docker in order to move my #Ghost blog there - possibly - as it’s the only way to let it federate (per the official Ghost.org documentation).
If you’ve followed me here for a while, you might have caught a running joke “please don’t tempt me to get a THIRD #VPS”.
This is my mayday, begging you: “please talk me out of getting a third VPS.”
I was happily doing online research wondering if I could install Docker on my #RaspberryPi5. Sure, it’s possible. Good to know.
Then things escalated when I started wondering: “hmmm how much would it cost to get a new VPS for Docker testing purposes?”
I checked out the website of my current VPS provider and noticed that you could get a basic VPS and pick an application that would come pre-installed. Docker is in the list of applications with a thumbs up next to it. Oh and I have a $20 credit after a commission. Awww the temptation!
I’m currently with my extended family in the middle of nowhere, with no WiFi in the house, one bar of 5G in most places (at best) and a laptop that refuses to connect to my phone’s hotspot. I’m typing this on my iPad (which is cooperating, vis-à-vis tethering). It’s my 12th day in this location, with 4 days to go before I return to civilization. I’m easily tempted because I’m going a little batty.
Please please please tell me that it’s better to learn Docker on my Pi 5. It’ll be waiting for me at home in a few days 😅

I have to admit when I started reading it 8 months ago at the start of my self-hosting journey, most of it went over my head. Like, 99% of it.

I just read Ghost’s developer docs and I think if I want to turn on federation for my blog I need to migrate my #Ghost CLI installation to #Docker:
https://docs.ghost.org/update?ref=ghost.org
I know nothing about Docker but I also have no internet on my laptop / can’t update Ghost anyway right now (see today’s blog post.)
I wonder: what’s the best way to learn Docker (or have a basic understanding of it) if you have 12 days to study it? I need a good Docker tutorial STAT 😅

Good morning Fedi friends!
I was supposed to start writing a new blog post about my tech stack - disclaimers about the apps/platforms I use and the ones I actively avoid for ethical reasons…
Well I just started doing some research and reading about #technofeudalism … and fell down a fascinating and haunting rabbit hole.
“Technofeudalism” is officially my word of the year, if not the decade (century, possibly). I wish more people were aware of it.
The #Fediverse feels more and more like a safe haven for me. And in the bleakness of our current political and technological situation, I’m comforted by the fact I’m currently self-hosting essential services (thank you @nprofile…gg0f ).
TL;DR: I’m super grateful for the existence of the #Fediverse and the fact I’ve learned how to self-host – two amazing ways to resist technofeudalism.

Substack is terrible - but even people who know it don't want to leave the platform – a tale in 3 acts.
Act I
Tech journalist Taylor Lorenz published a scoop a few days ago, showing how "Substack sent a push alert promoting a Nazi blog" (if you don't want to give #Substack a click, here is an alt link https://archive.ph/FTjEH).
It was a terrific and disturbing piece - kudos to her.
Act II (plot twist)
People started pointing out that Lorenz herself is using Substack as the publishing platform for her blog - which she monetizes with subscriptions. So, very ballsy move on her part to criticize the platform that she relies on to make a living, but still, some people started pointing out the incongruity of this. What about her values? Why wouldn't she move her newsletter?
Lorenz was starting to get fed up with these comments and explained on Bluesky (alt link / snapshot if you don't want to give Bluesky a click: https://archive.ph/CePll)
" Them: Get off substack
Me: Ok I set up a Patreon. The features aren’t as good but I’m willing to take a hit and do a lot more time consuming work on the back end to make it work. Here’s where you can subscribe to support me. Once enough people hop over I’ll be able to make the jump
Them: *crickets* "
She followed up that post with the comment:
" A lot of people on here want to attack and punish creators (esp women and LGBTQ ppl) for being forced to rely on certain platforms to make a living, but aren’t actually willing to support those creators in a way that allows them to leave the platforms ur so critical of them being forced to rely on. "
Fair enough.
Act III (in which I insert myself)
I don't post on Bluesky anymore but I felt compelled to resuscitate my account to point out that Substack is not only terrible, but it's also very expensive and takes the BIGGEST cut out of all other newsletter platforms.
I wrote:
" With all due respect Taylor, moving away from Substack is the ethical choice and it also makes financial sense. The great Molly White compiled a detailed breakdown of how much money creators who rely on subscriptions could save... by switching over to other platforms. "
And I linked to Molly White's brilliant post: https://hachyderm.io/@molly0xfff/114319870485786053
I also added a link to the article by @nprofile…f3e5 : "Not only is Substack right-wing broligarchy garbage, it's way more expensive than Ghost" https://micahflee.com/not-only-is-substack-right-wing-broligarchy-garbage-its-way-more-expensive-than-ghost/
Lorenz responded:
"Again, I am on Patreon and have had the option to receive my newsletter directly outside of Substack since day 1. Only 3 people have ever taken me up on this. By the way I cover Substack and the only reason I got the scoop I got it from being in the platform. Hence why I’ll always have an acct"
I just replied to her that #Ghost offers a free concierge migration service (https://ghost.org/concierge/) where she could move over all her paid subscribers... and I said that IMHO she could still use Substack Notes to share her articles if she moved elsewhere... but staying on Substack and giving them 10% of her earnings feels like an implicit endorsement.
I meant that in the most empathetic way. I can understand her struggles but she has 87,000 subscribers and if she wanted to move she could simply ask for help and I'm sure people would volunteer to set her up somewhere else. If she did so on the Fediverse she'd have a self-hosted account on a VPS in less than 24 hours.
Lest you think I want to "attack and publish creators (especially women)" like in Lorenz's words on Bluesky, well, I'm a woman who started self-hosting only 6 months ago and I now run my own Ghost blog which I manually installed. It's not that unattainable.
Maybe it's just me, but I believe that the tech we use sends an important message about our values and the causes we support. Everything is politics now. Including our tech stack.

🏕️ my adventures in #selfhosting - day 202 (new chapter edition) 📖
Hello Fedi friends,
I can't believe I missed the 200 day anniversary of my self-hosting journey. Life got in the way. I was in Como enjoying some family time and listening to the local philarmonic orchestra, so I cannot complain.
I'm thinking of changing things around here and publishing "my adventures in self-hosting" posts on my website first and syndicating them here. You know, the POSSE method and all, inspired by the great @[email protected].
This is by all means not a criticism of any Fediverse or social media platform.
It's just that I find it more empowering to have published content in a place where it is easily searchable... and it's not really the case here or anywhere else.
Social media glorify the present but I love the ability to go back in time to see what I was up to 6 months, a year or 5 years ago.
As a mom with aging parents, the idea of legacy is always front and center in my mind. I wanna build something that my daughter, when is older, could easily read, if she so chooses. But I'm also thinking of fellow newbies who are curious about self-hosting... having my self-hosting posts in a more organized space could definitely help others.
So this may be the last longform post I publish here natively. Future ones will be shared here of course, but will live on my website.
Anyway, it's time for my Monday routine: #YunoHost manual backup.
Wishing you all a lovely day / week! 💛

🏕️ my adventures in #selfhosting - day 198 (summer project edition) 🏖️
Hello Fedi friends,
I hope you've been having a nice week so far.
I've been in childcare mode, thus the silence. I've been thinking about something and I would love to get your advice.
#AskFedi: is there a way to export one's #GoToSocial archive of posts (but not replies to other users)? Like something with command lines that doesn't require tedious copy and paste operations?
I wanted to gather up all the posts about the first 6 months of my self-hosting journey, to neatly organize them on my website (either in multiple blog posts or pages) so that they could be more easily searchable. It's not really ideal to go on an infinite scroll quest in reverse chronological order to see the evolution of my self-hosting journey.
Like, I'm curious to see what I was up to in January but going back in time loading old posts takes forever. And I cannot really search for keywords.
I'd like to keep things organized and easily searchable. And implement a POSSE system going forward... publishing on my site first and then syndicating elsewhere.
It's my summer of POSSE inspired by @nprofile…eznj 🤗
https://www.citationneeded.news/posse/
If you have any ideas about how I can easily export all my #GtS posts, I'm all ears.
If not, I suppose I will start copying and pasting everything and do monthly installments of my self-hosting journey (aka "month 1" etc.). After all I have 1125 posts (sigh).
Anyways, I hope this finds you well and that you're keeping cool in this scorching heat (especially fellow Europeans).
have a lovely morning/afternoon/evening wherever you are ❤️

🏕️ my adventures in #selfhosting - day 188 (REAL self-hosting edition) 👻
Hello Fedi friends,
I hope you had a nice weekend.
I spent the vast majority of the past two months in full time filmmaking mode, for my Fedi promo video.
Now that the French (https://news.elenarossini.com/fedivers-video/) and the Italian (https://news.elenarossini.com/fediverso-video/) voice-over narrations are complete, I can finally resume my self-hosting adventures.
On the agenda for later this week: updating the version of my Ghost installation, which is something I am genuinely self-hosting, without the help of YunoHost...
I already did it once a couple of months ago, but now the stakes are higher because I'm getting hundreds of visits every day (since publishing the Fedi promo video).
Second item on my to do list: figuring out how to log onto #NextCloud from my mobile phone (the iOS app keeps spinning when I enter my server name).
I'm just really grateful to be able to do all this... A mere 6 months ago it would have seemed impossible.
Wishing everyone a great day! 🌞

🏕️ my adventures in #selfhosting - day 186 (bandwidth edition)🚦
A moment of gratitude for #VarnishCache and how incredibly it has protected my self-hosted #Ghost blog from the so-called "Mastodon stampede" / "Mastodon hug of death":
Yesterday I published a page on my site with the French-language version of the Fediverse promo video https://news.elenarossini.com/fedivers-video/
Then I posted a message on my Mastodon account about it, asking people to boost it, so that people in the Francophone world could see it.
How many boosts did I get? 1300 so far (you people are amazing).
Well, my Ghost blog is still standing and super fast. Varnish is INCREDIBLE and I could not recommend it more.
Oh and my VPS with PeerTube is also still standing because I embedded the French version of the video on my Ghost site, so that hundreds of Mastodon servers attempted to fetch the cover image of the POST and not the cover image of the video.
Bandwidth consumption (for my VPS with GoToSocial and PeerTube) so far this month: 0.457 TB (my limit is 8 TB)
Bandwidth consumption for my VPS with Ghost: 0.06 TB (limit: 4 TB)
So far so good 😅

Dear Fedi friends,
Would you like a visual representation of the "Mastodon Hug of Death"? AKA your site immediately going offline when you post a link on Mastodon... because thousands of servers are trying to fetch the preview image?
I have talked about it in the past and I feel like several people didn't believe me.
I experienced it twice with my self-hosted Ghost blog, before I had Varnish cache protecting it.
Well well well, a few minutes ago I experienced the Hug of Death (also known as the "Mastodon stampede") after posting a link to my Wordpress site. I had made a landing page for my Fedi promo video where you can download shorter clips and stills.
A few SECONDS after posting a toot with the link on Mastodon my Wordpress site went offline.
I immediately deleted the toot and went to check out the dashboard of my web hosting site, so I could clear the cache.
This is the image I saw - I GASPED OUT LOUD: nearly 4000 requests in seconds. That's how you DDOS yourself 🤪
I just re-posted the toot by adding an image from my computer so that thousands of servers wouldn't try to get the cover image from the post itself (media from a toot overwrite cover images from blog posts)
Just a regular Tuesday afternoon 20 minutes before I need to go get my child from pre-school 😅

🏕️ my adventures in #selfhosting - day 182 (new software edition!) ☁️
Good morning Fedi friends!
This #GoToSocial account is officially back to posting about... self-hosting from the POV of a newbie / non-dev.
This morning I hit a new little milestone: I FINALLY installed #NextCloud on my VPS (thank you #YunoHost).
I'm getting ready to share short clips of my Fedi promo video (that anybody could use / upload on their own accounts - esp. Big Tech ones, if they're so inclined) and I needed a solution to let people download files. NextCloud is perfect for the task - and something I had looked forward to installing for a looooong time.
I'll share more details soon, but so far I'm excited to finally use it.

Hi friends. Sorry for mentioning the dark underbelly of the internet / Fediverse but I wanted to show you how trolls operate - and how empowering it is to be able to immediately defederate from their instance(s).
Yesterday I was on the receiving end of vile, abusive messages from a handful of accounts. That stopped for a few hours but some fine individuals discovered that I had not blocked a couple of instances notorious for abuse.
And so someone posted: “I found a [transphobic comment] supporting instance that hasn’t defederated NiceCrew yet. Go nuts.”
“Go nuts.”
This sent chills down my spine.
By a super lucky coincidence, I had just sat down on my return train and opened up my iPad. The admin page for my GoToSocial account was still open on the instance block list. It took me exactly 10 seconds to add nicecrew [dot]digital and clew [dot] lol to the list. I had been offline all day and I thank my lucky stars for the fortunate timing, because I only saw ONE vile, abusive image from a troll. That’s it.
This is in contrast to my time on Twitter 1.0.
Once I upset a famous actor (and MAGA sympathizer) who had 6 million followers. He stumbled upon a tweet of mine that criticized a sexist incident at the Cannes Film Festival. Well, this actor (who shall remain nameless) encouraged his followers to harass me and I was inundated with hundreds of abusive comments for days. There was nothing I could do except make my account private for a week.
Here on the Fediverse at least I can defederate from abusive instances. And if someone sends me abuse from a more traditional instance, I could report the account to the mods and said account could be banned.
Anyway, I’ll be spending the weekend with family but I will definitely bring along my laptop and get up to speed with block lists, adding them to all my self-hosted accounts.
Thanks for all your help and advice yesterday - and for the timeline cleanse with the pics of your cute pets ❤️

My first submission for #FediBlock: today my account was the target of abusive messages that included: violent language, threats, incitement to self-harm, videos showing a woman being harmed, nazi imagery, racist slurs and misogynistic attacks.
I’m including the list of instances (not the actual horrid messages) so that you could block them too, if you wish to:
detroitriotcity .com
loli .church
poa .st (the WORST offender)
shitpost .cloud
tsundere .love
(I put a space between the domain name and the extension, on purpose)
Thank you for everyone who provided advice about how to deal with this 🙏

I took screenshots before blocking.
How does #FediBlock work? And how do you block entire instances when you are on mobile? (Traveling for the next few days).

🏕️ my adventures in #selfhosting - day 177 (VPS stress test edition) 📈
Dear Fedi friends,
You might have noticed I've been a little quiet on here since launching my Fedi promo video. What happened?
Well well well, the unexpected victim of my viral toot / video was... my beloved #GoToSocial account.
Approximately 12 hours after posting about my video - a toot that got 1200+ boosts - for some reason federation broke on this account. I was still posting messages and replying but getting zero interactions.
So yesterday evening, thanks to the amazing help of people on the GoToSocial Matrix help room, I was told to upgrade to the latest version of GoToSocial. And that fixed the problem, yay.
If you don't mind, I'll copy and paste parts of 2 messages I had tried to publish Tue & Wed:
((( message from Tue evening )))
Thank you for all the amazing feedback you shared today re: my Fediverse promo video. I’m really touched.
Extra thanks to everyone who helped spread the word on Big Tech platforms - to reach a wider audience. I don’t have any accounts there anymore (not even on LinkedIn) so I appreciate your help with fediverse advocacy 🙏
And special special thanks to all the superheroes who intentionally left the browser tab open on my video to take advantage of PeerTube’s P2P feature, helping offload bandwidth strain from my little server. You rock! 🥹
((( beginning of message from Wed Jun 11 )))
The past 24 hours have been incredible! Thank you for all the boosts to the post about my Fedi promo video (over a thousand!)
It looks like my self-hosted Ghost blog did well with the massive wave of traffic and didn't experience the "Mastodon hug of Death." THANK YOU Varnish cache for it! Total game changer. I could not recommend it more! (As someone who experienced the Mastodon hug of death TWICE before installing Varnish cache) 😅
So: my #Ghost blog survived. Ditto for my self-hosted #PeerTube (which is on a separate VPS - installed/managed via #YunoHost). The video so far has almost 5000 views - which is pretty good for PeerTube.
✨ The magic of the fediverse for you ✨
((( end of pasted messages )))
Since yesterday, I changed the visibility of the video, making it public. And my VPS is surviving, thanks to PeerTube's P2P and various instances mirroring the video (thank you fellow admins, I owe you big time!)
I'm just so grateful for all your nice words and support.
Later today I'll travel to Amsterdam, as I will be speaking at #PubConf2025 about the Fediverse YAY. I'm super honored for this opportunity and I look forward to reconnecting with many other Fediverse advocates who have become friends.
Exciting times 🥹
Wishing you all a lovely day! ✨🚀
