The 2026 British Human Power Club race meet calendar is now complete:
https://www.bhpc.org.uk/events/2026-races/
Note that due to the high entry fee and limited numbers the Derby Velodrome event is unofficial, and will not earn championship points. It's a rare opportunity to ride something other than a conventional track bike on an indoor velodrome.
After the popularity of the (narrow, twisty) track at Hereford, we're doing a double-bill with the similar track at Evesham. Should be good fun for the un-faired and multitrack riders.
And we've managed to secure exclusive use of the (eyewateringly expensive) Betteshanger Park track for a weekend in September. Not a full World Championships, but we hope that some riders from continental Europe will take the opportunity to come over to enjoy the track, which with its long swooping curves and good sight-lines is well suited to faster machines.

@nprofile…3w02 A little over a decade ago, I found myself huddled in a single-person tent in the rain, attempting to use the internet from an Android tablet tethered by Bluetooth to a Nokia not-quite-dumbphone that I'd managed to get an intermittent 3G signal on by wedging it just-so inside a pair of socks balanced inside an aluminium saucepan lying on its side.
Since then, the main difference is that nobody makes small smartphones with amazing battery life any more, and the caravannists have discovered iPlayer...

@nprofile…x759 @nprofile…ntmq Weirdly, the best episode is probably the fax machine one.
@nprofile…j845 and I once spent the Christmas holidays captioning them all so a Deaf friend could appreciate them. Alas our captions didn't seem to make it to Youtube, but the .srt files are still at the old site: https://sciencezero.4hv.org/tslom.htm (expired certificate)

@nprofile…args @nprofile…n6rt While I understood the optical side already it gave me words to describe the psychological effects of my colourblindness. "Small things having colour is not part of my umwelt."

It's been a long time coming, but here's David's video of the 2024 #WHPVA championships, complete with his usual excellent commentary. In which lots of people go very fast, and he fails to keep things rubber-side down.
There are bits of the 3-hour race that I've watched literally dozens of times in the finish-line camera footage, trying to spot velomobiles with dodgy timing tags. Weird to see them from the reverse angle (to say nothing of in colour).

Results for those playing along at home...
The 360° potatovision footage isn't the greatest at showing the machines, but it captures the atmosphere of the event perfectly, with people cheering each other on, relaxing in the sun and occasionally running around with flags and computer-touching.

@nprofile…args That's not a lock, it's a surge chamber to prevent water-hammer if the hydroelectric turbines have to stop suddenly (eg. due to an electrical problem). It would only fill with water in an emergency, or during a test like this one.

@nprofile…7wlh @nprofile…t37q @nprofile…98e3 @nprofile…2nz3 @nprofile…xnx9 IMHO it's mostly a fashion thing lead by the sort of racing-snake roadies who actually notice the weight of the bike, and presumably a lot of road bikes don't have the braze-ons to attach proper mudguards.
(Bodged-on mountain bike style mudguards are a poor substitute for proper full-length ones, which is a shame because they're what the average Brit invests in when they get tired of having a badger stripe up their arse because their supposedly practical hybrid didn't come with any. See also: lighting.)
All my bikes have mudguards, except when actually racing. Even my MTB has basic ones that keeps the mud off my upper body without clogging up.
