My statement is a historically proven fact of economics. Such actions result in tit-for-tat. Furthermore, why alienate allies? But: China and the EU will not fold so easily. We buy many essential goods from China that we cannot produce on a large scale (eg, meds, electronics, & lithium batteries).

Tariffs wars will win votes but will fail in the long term. Tariffs are taxes on imported goods. These costs will be passed on to the consumers because the companies will sell these goods to other markets. This produces shortages of goods, which drive prices up. The US economy cannot go back to a protectionist or isolationist position. The US depends on global trade. Why not cut Federal spending rather than raise taxes?

At issue is that the elected governments that you mentioned are no longer representing the people of their respected nations.
