Anecdotes, sure, but I've seen a number of conversations in different forums recently about how things are just... quieter all of a sudden.

First time starting up an Android device in... maybe a decade? And: wow. Start up, no sim card in the device even, no login to anything, and ads right there first thing, in a device I've paid for. Very cool to thumb right and get a fullscreen ad for That Fucking Guy and some MAGA shill from Alberta looking right there like it's part of the stock install because I'm in Canada I guess.
Well, off to the xda forums for me I guess.
If you work at Google you should quit.

Big-metal warfare is dead technology. And it's also the only full employment and subsidized education program that both American political parties support.
The U.S. military is shooting $4,000,000 Patriot missiles at $25,000 Iranian Shahed drones that Ukranians are interdicting with $800 drones built out of home 3d-printed parts, off the shelf components and open source software.
Between cheap drones and solar power, the US is losing a two-ocean economic war almost nobody even sees.

The current state of the browser ecosystem is fundamentally:
- Google Chrome
- Microsoft Chrome
- Apple Chrome
- Crypto-Neofash Chrome
- Microsoft Proxy Chrome
- Norwegian Chrome
- Other Norwegian Chrome
- Overtly-Corporate-Sock-Puppet Chrome (many)
- Embedded-Corporate-Sock-Puppet Chrome (many,many)
- Serial-Numbers-Filed-Off Chrome, and
- Firefox
So.

Whatever they say about "loving the Web", the Chrome team will choose Google's ad business over everything else, web standards, user agency, security, privacy, safety, interoperability, literally anything and everything else every single time.
What anyone on that team says they love or care about or want does not change anything they're going to do.
Get Firefox.
Yes, they're thrashing. Yes, the AI stuff is bullshit nobody wants.
Get Firefox, add uBlock Origin.

Absolutely blows my mind to watch so many businesses rushing headlong into this, rebasing their whole systems and reanchoring their entire identities on an obviously unreliable, wildly oversubsidized tech stack that has no visible path to profit or productivity beyond vampire-capital rent extraction from dependent victims. Gladly cutting off their fingers to fit gloves other people made with no protection, no differentiation, nothing.
Just throwing themselves head first into the wood chipper.

It's kind of amazing how many veteran Linux greyhairs I've seen, downstream of the age-check-in-systemd decision, saying well I guess I need to get comfortable with a BSD now. Thirty plus years of deep-grooved Debian/RedHat muscle memory to a one, quietly tidying up and looking for the exits.

ok so the US president threatens the pope via the avignon papacy that we've definitely all heard of but the pope doubles down on how world peace is good and war with iran is bad so the president makes an ai picture of himself where he's jesus healing john stewart but then iran jumps in saying we're on the pope's side and jesus is a holy man and that's not OK so the secretary of war and not defence anymore recites a made up bible verse from a tarantino movie and somehow this week is not over yet.

Age verification is a deliberate attack on system sovereignty, both for individuals and countries. There’s no “age verifcation”, there is only “identity verification that includes age”, and the system doing verification is not just a privacy-invasive user tracking system but a remotely controlled off switch for anyone of any age.

Listen, if your kid trusts you enough to ask for a burner, help them. Wipe your old phone or find something cheap, teach them about threat models, private browsing and factory reset, then teach them how to teach these things to other people. The only question you need to ask is, is this for you or for someone else, and you don’t ask who or why.
You don’t need to make the first conversation perfect, you need to make the next conversation possible.

Helping out some of my kids’ friends with tech, and once again am reminded that domestic abuse is absolutely the flagship threat model in this industry, the place the victim is closest to real physical harm and has the least recourse and resources available to them. The hardest problem, almost totally unaddressed, exaggerated when the victim is underage.

It's difficult for me to talk calmly about companies that are excited to spend hundreds of millions of dollars training stochastic models while the teachers in every public classroom in North America pay for their own chalk, some of their students' school supplies and some fraction of their students' lunches out of their own pockets. That those companies go on to say this will make the teachers "obsolete" is too much.

The company that (last week) accidentally published the source code of their flagship product, which was in turn discovered to be a contraption riddled with security holes and included instructions to deliberately mislead people, is telling us (this week) that they've got a new product that is _too good_ at finding security issues so they need to make a special secret cabal and only share it with them because it would be too dangerous to show anyone else.
This is definitely all very believable.

Suddenly the prospect of surrendering yourself to American custody meant maybe getting tortured to death and maybe getting sexually humiliated as part of the process; everyone saw it was better to die fighting. In days the entire tide of that conflict in that whole region changed; there was no recovering from it.
We're looking at the long unwinding of that story here today, everywhere. Nobody can or will believe in Americans, or even the idea of America, again. That's over now.

2026-04-08 01:30:29 GMT

During the first few weeks of Operation Desert Storm we'd routinely see footage of entire battalions of Iraqi soldiers walking up to the first American GI they could find waving white flags, believing that the worst thing that could happen to them at the hands of the American military was a shower, an MRE and a pack of cigarettes. The mythos of the American a just actor was largely intact then, and that mythos saved a lot of American lives. And then Abu Grahib happened, and that all ended.

Re-upping:
You need to internalize the idea that hypocrisy is not a meaningful accusation to the right. Of course they're hypocrites. That you are bound - by rules, standards, logic, human decency, some basic moral consistency, anything at all - and they are not? That is the right's conception of what power is and why they seek it: that they can exercise power, for its own sake, without constraint, and you cannot. It is its own justification.
Hypocrisy is the virtue-signaling of fascism.

As gross as I think Claude is, I also think that if the end state of open source projects is that devs are left to work alone for years on the keystone projects of this jenga tower we're calling modern infrastructure, and then we collectively jump all over them when they turn to the kind of help that, however reprehensible it might be, _actually shows up to help_, then the entire FOSS project is a popularity contest where the losers get to join a slow, lonely suicide pact.

It is important to understand that these are not "Meta workers" in the way you might think of them as "extremely well paid engineers in California."
These are the underpaid contractors in Kenya and Nigeria doing the soul-destroying work of watching every horror of the world so that some American congressman's kid or hyperindignant ragekaren doesn't inadvertently see a boob on a slow news day.
These people aren't being creepy, they're being exploited.

I guess I'm naive about this kind of thing but I actually believe that when military leaders boast about the precise accuracy of their impossibly expensive weapons and then use them to destroy schools and refugee camps full of children, and that somehow keeps happening and nobody is disciplined or court-martialed or sent to the Hague for doing it, that means those militaries are deliberately targeting schools and refugee camps full of children.

In aggregate, whether it’s tracking people through ads or using networked cameras to plan attacks or any of a thousand other attack vectors, in a functioning democratic society the people’s privacy is a national security question.

Well, this probably means that using generative AI for development is incompatible with any foss licensing, but it also means that there’s no such thing as “proprietary” GenAI code.

My Very Large Canadian Bank: this transaction will take up to three days. Weekends aren't days. Holidays might be days but they also might not be. It's hard to say year to year. Will you be charged for late payment? Will it happen on time or at all? Well, let me answer your question with a question: what is time? Or money, do you ever wonder about that? We say time is money but is it really? Sure does make you think.
My Tiny Canadian Credit Union: Done. Yes. Thank you for being a member.

Again, there is no "age verification", there is only "identity verification", and "identity verification at the OS level" means specifically that there is no such thing as free software in any inclusive, democratic sense and no such thing as "computer ownership" in any way that involves meaningful choice.

It's difficult for me to believe that three F-15s were shot down by friendly fire in two days.
It's much, much easier for me to believe that the American - and world's - military-industrial apparatus will say and do whatever it takes to keep the headlines from reading "$100,000,000 F-15 Strike Eagle Brought Down By $5,000 Drones."

It remains wild that all of these tools - MCP, OpenClaw, not just the entire AI stack but the entire ecosystem - don't think that security matters at all. Validation, sanitization, authentication, none of it. Call it 'autonomous' and yolo it out there for VC clout.
There's relearning the lessons of 90's computing, and then there's the lessons of 1850s London sanitation, of Roman-era waste management. Everyone just lets their cattle shit in the town well, it'll be fine.

What if I could convince you that taking the same time to explain detailed requirements and carefully validate results with a junior colleague instead of a chatbot would not only give you two people who understood the code instead of zero, but if you do it a few times in a row you eventually get a senior colleague out of the deal for free.

Are there any caveats to using protobufs with rust that aren’t obvious? The protobuf documentation feels very … annoyed that it needs to admit rust exits.

I’ve been thinking about this for days. Incredible stochastic algorithm, gets more reliable the larger your input, incredibly fast, trivial to implement and deterministic on its inputs. It really has so much going for it.

Lazyweb: are there any fitness-tracker wristbands out there that do not need a sign in to an account on a service anywhere and keep data local, if only to the phone? Or in a better world, desktop? My position is that “Obscure thing plus obscure software plus contortions” is fine, but “you only need to log into Wayland-Yutani Bioconsumer products healthotronic AI services once” is not.

We should start a rumour that the real reason Gallup isn't doing presidential approval ratings anymore is that Trump's approval ratings have gone negative and a codebase full of unsigned integers is too expensive to fix.
