the Lexan body. the paint job is 90% of what I wanted. there are paint leaks from me not masking it off perfectly. I haven’t applied any stickers yet.
I’m actually very happy with the paint despite that.
the rear turnbuckles I need to adjust. I see the rear tires not wearing evenly.
but these are all nitpicks. this was a bucket list to own this specific model when I was 9 years old.
and now I can enjoy the activity with my 9 year old son.
I did go too cautious with the gearing since it’s a 1991 model with 2025 motors and batteries.
I went with the standard 87 tooth spur gear and a 17 tooth pinion gear. the motor is rated to heat up to 160F. this being the magnets inside it stop being magnets at 176F.
but I can run it for over 5 minutes and I can touch the motor and it feels room temperature
So I think a 48 pitch 19 tooth pinion gear is in my future. Though it’s fast enough as it is.

but it sounds like you just want a well supported general purpose distro... Ubuntu is great for that. stick with it.

There are plenty of SBC that will happily run dos... provide proper com ports.. emulate floppy to flash drive.. emulate IDE to flash storage... use proper UARTs... proper baud rate..
The thing is certifying new hardware for this purpose is time consuming and expensive.

the 16bit windows version is far superior to the dos version.
At least for this game since it is heavy on menus and keyboard shortcuts and having the game window and toolbar window being their own separate things.
plus the soundcard just works since Windows is handling the redbook audio music and the sound effects are PCM. The background music on this game its literally just playing cd audio tracks.
There is a reason Civ 2 in particular is left off of the Steam collections of all the Civ games... its made for Windows 3 / 95.
The mac version runs well on my old imac... they even got the keyboard right where if you have a 10 key it does the diagnal movement right like the windows version.

I do work for an HVAC company where their controller software only runs properly on 95/98/ME. I have a stable full of Dell Pentium 2 and Pentium 3 machines ready to deploy... with Compact Flash to IDE and Ive stashed an image I can deploy with their software already installed.
They happily pay $2000 for a Pentium 2... plus 6 hours labor.

Mac changes cpu architecture every 10 years. Dropped 32 bit binaries with no remorse.. changed their security model to make it very unintuitive to run a binary that hasn't been signed with a developer account.
Windows only has the market share because it runs Win32 API software... And when you could still have a 32bit Windows install you could run many 16 bit windows apps and dos shit. Windows 11 you still have the "c:\" drive and can't name a directory "com1" since thats reserved for a serial port.
Linux.. yeah the 25 year old programs have "maintainers" and "packagers" to keep them current. Try installing a 10 year old distro and see if the repos respond.
