Some of Alice's for example can increase ammo, decrease overheat buildup, give her bonus stacks of certain items, and reduce the amount of awakening shards she needs to get an awakening (yes that stacks, she needs it because of how many she has). The main menu also has the decoder which allows you to unlock currently 51 additional items for the pool, some of which could be very helpful.
