I'm afraid it's not paranoia. I'm in the future, so to speak, and I can tell what they're trying out here in Brazil: it's labeled age verification, but it actually forces tracking of everyone's identity (because you have to associate children with parents, and parents have to authorize children's communications), it normalizes the use of biometrics (even if the law doesn't mandate it, but the market wants it), and it prohibits software freedom (because software that must disobey the user cannot be under the user's control).

to be fair, there's no requirement of using a third-party service, but the long delay in regulating the procedures for age assessment made room for the "market" to come up with various bad ways to accomplish that. it sucks to be us.
on the good side, the law is quite strict in that the information cannot be used for other purposes. I guess lawmakers didn't know about Cambridge Analytica, or didn't care, or something.
what's worst, IMHO, is that the law pretty much rules out freedom-respecting software, and this is the case not only for minors, and though its supporters promise age verification isn't about identification, they don't seem to have considered that the law mandates parental supervision through online services, so identification is necessary to connect children with the parents/guardians, and parental supervision encompasses allowing communications with the minors, so everyone else must also be identified. it's terrible terrible terrible.
on the upside, the rules for app stores that require parent approval for minors to install programs are so broad that they apply to websites that offer javascript code for download, so we should (if the law catches) see browsers shipping with javascript disabled, and web sites used by minors being refitted to work without javascript.

nesta quinta-feira também teve comemoração dos 30 anos do Instituto de Computação, onde estudei. nem sei se seria aberta pra mim, só fiquei sabendo quando a companheira, que é professora lá, lamentou que não conseguiria ir, mas foi meio chocante pra mim cair a ficha que um instituto que eu vi nascer já tem 30 anos. quando comecei a estudar lá, ainda era um departamento de outro instituto.
como já ouvi alguém dizer, é muito doido ter a mesma idade que pessoas mais velhas 😉

é um dos hospitais da unicamp, especializado em saúde da mulher. o saguão em que cantamos é um salão de espera para tratamentos e atendimentos, parece-me que especialmente de cânceres diversos

depois de uma quarterça longuíssima, a #caminhada da quinta foi de manhã bem cedinho. duas voltinhas na lagoa, uma pra lá outra pra cá, com esticadinha por fora da concha acústica porque o trechinho da pista ainda sem calçamento continua bloqueado.
é um barato como o pessoal da manhã é muito mais responsivo aos desejos de, no caso, bom dia. eu vou cumprimentando todo mundo, mas bem baixinho, quase sussurado, que é pra ninguém se sentir obrigado a responder. de tarde às vezes alguns respondem, de noite e de fim de semana menos, mas de manhã tem gente que responde com vontade!

I recall having a conversation with a former customer about that some 20 years ago, when ICC was aiming at GCC compatibility to be able to compile Linux, and that wasn't even close to viable, to the point of looking impossible
yet now clang, that came into existence later than ICC, has caught up with all that baggage that used to be GCC only
besides, a number of features that used to be GCC extensions have been standardized and can now be taken for granted with many more compilers
it makes for a much more interesting and competitive landscape

I agree that by integrating slop into GPLed codebases, there are risks of adding code that could be derivative of GPL-incompatible code, and that would spell trouble to that who integrated it and to everyone downstream.
I expect that, if it happens, we (Linux-libre) would be in a position of unintended infringement, we wouldn't be hit first, and as soon as Linux puts its act together, we'd inherit the fix.
if third parties go about notifying us and terminating our licenses over infringement of the integrated bits, they will apply to those bits, not to the fixed upstream version.
if Linux copyright holders go about notifying and terminating licenses over the unauthorized combination with GPL-incompatible code, we'd get the grace period that the Linux community imported from GPLv3 to inherit the fixed codebase, so we should be fine.
overall it doesn't strike me as intolerable legal risk
it sucks to carry slop though, but as sally said, our goal is to make minimal changes to Linux to get an FSDG-compliant kernel. if it brings slop in it, it would only be of concern if that turned out to be nonfree (no license or incompatible license) or otherwise FSDG-incompliant. the former case would likely be handled upstream before we even knew about it. the latter would be up to ourselves, but it's hard to even imagine something like that coming up from slop.

missão cumprida, #caminhada noturna concluída com sucesso. preferia ter dado um tempinho maior entre o jantar e a voltona ao redor do parque e da praça, mas foi o que deu pra fazer... eu me senti meio sonâmbulo, não por estar realmente com sono, mas por estar divagando tanto nos pensamentos que nem vi o caminho passar, de repente já tinha acabado.
mas ó as bobagens que fiquei pensando: a história de um japonês, oya-san, que se casou com uma coreana, foram morar no extremo norte do litoral do brasil e abriram um food-truck de comida coreana, daquelas servidas em cumbucas: o oya poke
tem também aquele remake do frozen em que as princesas eram robôs, e a maior travava no frio. por isso a menor cantava pra ela: "você quer brickar na neve?" e depois, noutra música, a outra respondia "o frio só vai mesmo me congelar." fiquei tentando encaixar um serelepe tentando pegar uma noz nesse cenário nada quentíssimo mas não consegui; o mamute, então, nem se fala!

that's certainly a topic that has come up, but to the best of my knowledge (which isn't much) we may be trying to get some legal advice about that.
I know there are discussions about this topic going on within GNU, but until legal advice is obtained, we're not really able to make much progress, and we'd probably have to make extremely conservative recommendations.
if you happen to know of any free software-friendly lawyer who would be willing to offer the FSF pro-bono advice, that would be great, I suppose we can always use some growth to our legal pool 😉

on this evening, 18 years ago, the #Linux-libre project was launched.

before that, every distro that wanted to respect its users' freedom had to remove itself all of the binary blobs that were distributed as part of the kernel Linux's so-called sources
it took a little while for Linux to react to being so called out, by first making those binary blobs loadable separately, and then moving most of them to a separate subproject.
that didn't really solve any freedom issues, given that the drivers still demanded users to install and run those blobs.
Linux-libre joined the #GNU Project a few years later.
the set of blobs demanded by Linux has grown out of control, much faster than Linux itself. nowadays there are even binary blobs that contain a binary copy of Linux!
you might think that, after the split, the kernel Linux became entirely Free, and that the only remaining problem are the demands for binary blobs and the documentation that directs users to install them.
unfortunately, not even that is true. Linux still carries a few binary blobs disguised as arrays of bytes in what was supposed to be source files. there have even been recent additions to this wall of shame.
so it doesn't look like we'll be able to retire GNU Linux-libre any time soon.

erhm, we don't really have much of a choice WRT the destructive initiatives aimed at us, unfortunately. but maybe we're miscommunicating
GNU has met its initial goal of a complete freedom-respecting operating system (whether with software contributed explicitly to GNU, or free software developed independently that happens to work with GNU), enabling people to use computers in freedom. that was long ago, but the software still needs to be maintained, because users keep on relying on the software, and because needs evolve. besides the core operating system, new developments have taken place in applications. one of my recent favorites is GNU Jami.
nowadays, one of the greatest challenges was the change in the form factor of the most common computers, now dominated by a duopoly of heavily proprietary suppliers that lock the computers down and seek control over all the programs that users are allowed to install, to the point of prohibiting freedom-respecting software in their app stores. the empire struck back, and this has been a very hard nut to crack. I had a plan in 0G but fate laughed at my plans and made it clear it had different ones for my life.

wow, I wasn't familiar with GNU Sather! I recall having been interested in Eiffel very long ago, but there wasn't a Free Software implementation. maybe if GNU Sather had gained more visibility, people could be using it instead of Java or, more recently, Rust.
now, IIUC its history, it started elsewhere, and then it was contributed to GNU. it would probably not make much sense for GNU to reject that kind of contribution. if people want to do that kind of computing (programming in an Eiffel-like language), they should be able to do that in freedom, and that's what GNU aims for. but that gripe doesn't seem to bear much relationship with the point of the blog post, does it? if it does, I couldn't see the connection.

interesting. this suggests that naming the practice of blocking the execution of modified or recompiled versions of programs as Tivoization may have been a misnomer. from what you say, it seems that Tivo did not do that. but that didn't stop others from doing just that. for lack of a better term to describe that practice, I keep on calling it Tivoization.
I don't think this case is one of digital handcuffs, at least not in the program itself. it's other components of the device reacting to the modification. you could say it's digital handcuffs in the other components. but it's not the program itself stopping you from doing things.
I guess what feeds the confusion is that GPLv3 addressed both issues. but the definition of Tivoization, e.g. on Wikipedia, is pretty clear and well-referenced: it's about blocking the execution of modified versions, without any mention to other programs' refusing to function along with the modification.

I'm not seeing the difference you're claiming. the SOF binaries and the signature (by an Intel-controlled secret key) on them work exactly like Tivo-supplied binaries and signatures (by a Tivo-controlled secret key): there's a component on the sound cards that checks for the signatures, just like on Tivo systems, and that prevents the binaries from running if the signature doesn't match.
now, you make it sound like the unsigned binary would still run, it's just other parts of the system that would cease to function. that doesn't match whatever little I have found, but... where can I find more information to understand how that (other?) problem affects us?

Tivoization isn't a problem with the free software
I guess that's the point that's debatable, and we may differ on that.
free software is software that respects the users' essential freedoms for users to have control over the software. if the software contains a signature meant to prevent users from enjoying those freedoms and that control, in the intended (possibly single) use scenario, would it be reasonable to say that the software is free? I don't think so.
now, it's true that, in order for that freedom-deprivation scheme to work, other nonfree components need to be present in the system. but the problem is not so much that the nonfree components cease to operate (that would indeed be an injustice related with the nonfree components), it's that they prevent modified versions of the previously-free software from operating (which compounds the injustice of the nonfree components with an injustice over software that was supposed to be free)
I don't think the case of SOF is one of digital handcuffs. the SOF programs are not preventing users from doing anything. they would be free software if it weren't for the Tivoizing signatures. and if they implemented digital handcuffs, inasmuchas they're free software, one could escape by modifying the programs. of course, once they're Tivoized, escape is no longer an option in the intended use scenario, but the handcuffs are not in the SOF programs themselves, but in the nonfree components of SOF-targeted devices.

I don't see that it does. taking us as a transient accidental but factual state, which we are, seems to work just fine, and that's how I've understood it. it's kind of reasoning backwards: since we know we are here, then preconditions must be such that bring us to be. it doesn't follow that we're special, just that we happen to be here now, and preconditions can thus be inferred from that. the same kind of inference from effect back to cause could be made about inanimate objects, or anything that is known to exist, really, or that is known to have existed.

deu pra encarar uma #caminhada no fim da tarde. voltinha na lagoa, prestando atenção aos passos pra reduzir o atrito. a bolha só reclamou um pouco depois, mas já bem menos que ontem. vamos ver como evolui até amanhã...
hoje a netinha foi junto. aproveitamos a saída pra buscá-la na escola e fomos direto pro parque. ela adorou a ideia. aí ficou brincando com o patinete, sob a guarda dos pais, enquanto eu fazia minha caminhada aeróbica. depois andamos um pouquinho mais na volta da lagoa no ritmo dela, pra ela ver os bichos.

I stand by my claim. as long as the user keeps the system only for one's own private use, no one else will even know what's going on there, and so the user gets away by default in this de minimis "violation", therefore, there's effectively no developer power over the user.
another way to think of it is to realize that the requirement doesn't apply to the user as such, but to the user as operator. there aren't fundamental ethical objections to imposing requirements onto intermediaries, including operators, to ensure users aren't defined the freedoms they deserve, inasmuchas the requirements refrain from granting the intermediaries power over users, rather than taking their (intermediaries and users alike) freedom away

it does apply, and for the scenario at hand, the user/operator already has access to the program's source code, so no further action is required. now, you might want to argue that adding the local git repo and git commit id or tag or whatever to the running software is required (you may be right about that), but that's an absolutely trivial non-onerous requirement, and it's also good software practice. do you really want to argue that this imposes upstream developers' values onto the poor oppressed user? I didn't think so.

you'll be surprised that, because copyright doesn't reserve the right to run programs exclusively to the copyright holder, copyright licensing (= granting permissions) cannot withhold or delimit that right. there are some clueless license writers fooling themselves and others purporting to have copyleft-like licenses that do this, but all this shows is that they understand neither copyright nor copyleft
the other fundamental problem is that the entire notion of software freedom is that the developers/authors/copyright holders should not have power over users. controlling others through the software they use, even if for a good cause, amounts to unjust power, and such power shouldn't be available. (it also divides the community on what should be ruled out, which is a great way to weaken a social movement)
now, I understand and share the wish to promote socially just causes, and to stop injustice. the way to achieve justice is not to take it on your own hands, imposing your wish onto others by whatever means you can manage. that leads to absolute rule by the most powerful, and I'm sure you're not going to enjoy that. the way to promote social change and achieve justice is by democratically instituted and enforced prohibitions of antisocial unjust behaviors

a #caminhada foi ao por do sol. parece que é um horário bem concorrido no parque. o estacionamento estava bem cheio quando cheguei, e quase vazio quando saí. dei a volta pela pista externa.
o evento mais marcante foi ao chegar ao estacionamento da parte mais baixa, o que estava alagado no dia que tomei chuva. hoje estava bem cheio de carros. a pista da ciclovia passa no meio do estacionamento. e não é que o motorista espertinho resolveu trafegar pela ciclovia para chegar a uma saída para bicicletas em que até cavaletes havia para sinalizar que não é nem entrada nem saída de carros?
cheguei a tempo de presenciar o carro bloqueando a passagem de um ciclista, o ciclista reclamando e pedindo respeito, e o motorista todo cheio de si achando-se cheio também de razão. deu tanta vergonha alheia que até me intrometi na discussão explicando que ele havia invadido o espaço dos ciclistas. ele saiu enfezado, ainda se achando com razão. só depois pensei que devia ter tirado foto, com a placa do carro bem visível. fica anotado o plano pro caso de acontecer de novo. infelizmente deve acontecer muito 😞
