"The word *courage* is very interesting. It comes from a Latin root *cor*, which means 'heart.' So to be courageous means to live with the heart. And weaklings, only weaklings, live with the head; afraid, they create a security of logic around themselves. Fearful, they close every window and door-with theology, concepts, words, theories-and inside those closed doors and windows, they hide."

same with money.
some people come of age during a deep depression or excessive inflation, others during a raging bull market or generational prosperity and cheap gas, and each grows older thinking they've learned how to save and invest.
Morgan Housel probably said it best: "Your personal experiences with money make up maybe 0.00000001% of what's happened in the world, but maybe 80% of how you think the world works."

"The word *priority* came into the English language in the 1400s. It was singular. It meant the very first or prior thing. It stayed singular for the next five hundred years. Only in the 1900s did we pluralize the term and start talking about priorities. Illogically, we reasoned that by changing the word we could bend reality. Somehow we would now be able to have multiple 'first' things."

This happens when rates are so high that avoidance increases, and taxation-induced inflation erodes the value of the money collected (Parkinson 1960: 79; Eisenstadt 1963: 152)"

"For me, there are two kinds of debts a person can incur. One kind is the material one, which can be seen and touched. It may be as small as a cup of sugar, or as large an amount of money as you can borrow. This has to be paid as soon as possible, so that your own good self-image and personal dignity will not be crushed by it.
The other kind of debt is a spiritual one. It is the one that spurs man to be better than he is, and somehow drives him to go beyond the call of need and duty. One should wear this kind of debt as a suit of shining armor. It can never be fully repaid, but you wish that it could be, with such compounded interest that it would be beyond the wealth of Midas.
I used to envy people who say, 'I don't owe anyone anything!' Now I only feel great pity for those people because they've cut themselves off from the world and human society. How lonely they must be!"

"This is what makes the ethanol and biofuel boondoggle so enraging. Not even Jonathan Swift would dare to write a satire in which politicians argued that – in a world where species are vanishing and more than a billion people are barely able to afford to eat – it would somehow be good for the planet to clear rainforests to grow palm oil, or give up food-crop land to grow biofuels, solely so that people could burn fuel derived from carbohydrate rather than hydrocarbons in their cars, thus driving up the price of food for the poor. Ludicrous is too weak a word for this heinous crime."
