I use this account primarily on Fridays to post along with watching old ‘vintage’ repeats of Top Of The Pops which are broadcast on BBC4 on Friday evenings. Lots of other people in the UK do the same, using the TOTP hash tag. That’s mostly what I use this iceshrimp fediverse address for.

At art college in 1980 I did product design and photography, then in the 80s/90s/00s I became a professional photographer and artist and designer (including magazine art editor). Now I cycle on my folding bike and take photos around London’s Docklands and the River Thames.

Where are the Thinkpad people on the fediverse? I’m becoming slightly open to the idea of having a computer that isn’t a MacBook, for the first time in, well, since Macs. Apparently the Thinkpad is the one to go for but I now discover they have a whole load of numbers and letters.
Looking at the specifications on YouTube for ‘greatest Thinkpad ever’ or ‘Thinkpad to install Linux on’ type of videos it looks to me that they’re fine for boring office stuff but I’m using Macs for art and design, and the thinkpads they all mention seem to have basic non-retina screens.
I should point out that I’ve never ever used the ‘windows’ OS, so have never used non Mac computers, but I’ve slightly used Linux as a user (not an expert) since the turn of the century but not on a serious level for art, not while I’ve got Macs sitting around.
Is there an ideal Thinkpad for Linux for art and design? That doesn’t cost too much? That’s still maintainable and repairable? #Thinkpad #Thinkpads

When you say and I quote “like a corporate, big-tech web”, I will contest the use of the word ‘web’ there. That’s exactly what it is not. There’s no web-ness about any of it today. It’s still called the WWW, but really although it’s world and wide, it’s not web. Not at all. Not in any way. Outside of some personal websites there’s no way any such (can’t call it a website, it’s not of a web) site will offer any way to link to any other – why would they, they’d lose you, it’s the last thing any site wants to do. It’s literally the opposite of a web – no interconnection, no acknowledgement that any other site even exists out there, just a trap, once you’re in, you can’t go sideways to another site, only stay here.

I didn’t really find such an ethos in vintage synths though – although maybe I’m out of touch with what the communication methods are nowadays for synth resurrection. Initially in the 90s I spent most waking and sleeping non-work hours on the Analogue Heaven mailing list which was exceedingly prolific back then, I’d post manuals and circuit diagrams I found to other people halfway around the world and they’d do the same to me, using the actual postal service – this was an oftentime thing, all arranged on the mailing list. We’d spread a lot of wisdom (eg your Korg PolySix battery is probably leaking acid at this moment).
More recently, back before Mod Wiggler when it was still Muff Wiggler, I had good discussions with others about what I was doing to rebuild my ARP 2600 (the 4019 VCA was dead and a solid block of epoxy as I found when I cut into it, I rebuilt one on veroboard) and there’s a lot of old wisdom there.
What worries me is older people who put up a website 20 years ago with good information on, who might not be around any more, and the website domain is now dead and inaccessible. There’ll be an increasing amount of link rot and I think this will be a signature social ill of the generation that are not even yet born, they’ll be faced with almost every suggestion of where information is turning out to be a dead end. The knowledge will be gone. This gap will be significant.
I wonder if the thing with synths is that we vintage synth owners know we’re sitting on a pile of atrophying decaying dust-attractors, and rather than think about the long-term value of it, we’re always considering offloading it so that it’ll be someone else’s problem.

Night At The British Museum
Nothing comes alive or anything like that, the new night watchman walks around the museum which is now completely empty of exhibits – the rooms and displays are empty. Morning comes, everything is back. After a few more nights he realises that the empty spaces are in fact not in London, but are empty spaces in other countries.

out of interest, how much ‘LL’ is there in an LLM which can accept visual input? How much of the input image is treated in the same way it treats language? The image itself isn’t analogous to a prompt in English language, or any other language, or even ‘pieces of picture’ language (or ‘aspects of picture’ I suppose), because you’re also supplying a written prompt alongside the input image.

that’s highly interesting – I wonder if it is the same with music, eg pop music – I wonder if the conceptual working is from the younger crowd, or the older lot, or whether the ‘technique’ focus is from mature artists or bands or not
In terms of innovation, I often wonder if it’s the youngsters bringing it (often yes) or those more experienced that are more comfortable with shortcuts and overall “what this really amounts to” understandings (often yes also)

I’ve got a bottle of Caran d'Ache Saffron fountain pen ink, which I’ve filled my Waterman fountain pen with the other week, and it’s not giving me that vivid orange any more, it’s a sort of weak light brown slightly greenish even, but not what I remember it used to be – the bottle is probably about 20 years since I bought it and was cheap in the stationery shop so who knows how long they had it – maybe this is what happens to that particular ink as it ages once opened #FountainPens

Eliminate hyperlinks in emails
That’s it – stop emails from being able to contain clickable links or any sort of anchor element with an href destination or any similar construction, just prevent the ability to click on a thing in an email, just stop it from taking effect
It’d be a significant but simple change to how email works, and it’d be tantamount to a big worldwide platform-wide security update which is necessary for everyone to participate in, make it so that from now on, it’s not expected to have clickable links in an email and if you still have any after this they won’t work now anyway #Cybersecurity

it’d be good if the fediverse were where people felt they wanted to come to on it’s own merit – rather than one of the places they washed up in because the place they were originally in had turned bad, and I think it has the potential to be not a lifeboat but a pleasure cruise
My criteria is just – did the post I have just read make me feel better than I was before I read it, or worse
The fediverse has a bit of a tendency to tip the balance toward more posts making me feel worse once I’d read them than before I read them, and the solution is to not read them, and if they’re the majority, then not be here at all
but yes, there’s cats and rabbits and photos and art and lunacy and trivia and jokes and a shared despair of the 9-5 and futility of modern life – but there’s also self-appointed newscasters and agenda-pushers who want to make everyone feel guilty and those who post emotively histrionic sensational posts designed to garner boosts + engagement (yes even in the fediverse) and this base layer of negativity can only harm and we’d all live much better lives without it.
Also, newcomers shouldn’t have to conclude that this is what we’re like because deep down we’re better, like we were when we were children

I do intend to install it (self host it) but I’m sort of waiting for iceshrimp.net to reach their initial release in a few months, and I’ll install that onto a Raspberry Pi 5 with SSD, and along with that I’ll put pixelfed on it too – it’ll come, but gradually
In the meantime I’m on Flick R and I’m seeing that slowly wake up and become not dead any more, which is nice

I wasn’t going to be on the fediverse today and to disguise that I am for a few mins I just kept quiet and lurked – but… I have to respond to this
I don’t think you’re correct in what you say, a better UI and better social discovery are nice to have but really won’t impact the user base, not one bit
In my opinion the one single factor that will expand (or shrink) the user base is “what people talk about” in the content
I’m drifting away from the fediverse myself and it’s largely because of what people pick to talk about as their content, what people feel they need to tell everyone about, and perhaps more crucially what the tone of presenting the content is
I’m getting fed up with all this being told off by people who feel they must tell everyone about something bad or some injustice and simply broadcast it to everyone as though it’s their job to be an unpaid professional newscaster whether I like it or not – this is a persistent and thorough torrent of injustices and bad shit being pushed out by people, who I wish would just shut up and not tell me about those things, I didn’t ask them to
And I haven’t addressed that it’s far too technical and the assumption is that everyone knows all the technical words and does technical computer-y things all day so they’d appreciate all the technical posts, I don’t think that’s the off putting factor any more (it doesn’t help, but I don’t think it’s the turn-off for ‘the normal people’ that I used to think it was)
No, it’s all the negative shit – I’m done with it

I personally couldn’t stand Genesis and I now realise it was primarily because I couldn’t stand the other people at school who liked Genesis – it was very much a school band for other schoolchildren and by that I mean schoolboys, not girls – it promulgated a specific Englishness that was to me quite unhealthy and narrow and ‘something to believe in’ and I suspect that the people who got into Genesis at school would later grow up to prize their Englishness and are now adults who want nothing else other than to stop immigration because of this early instilled fiction they participated in at school – it was all too much of a club, it seemed to me
Fortunately I left the UK half way through my secondary school and left behind those insufferable pricks for a much wider world

One of my Heltec V3.1s is connected to four solar panels in the garden (chopped up and paralleled from four garden spotlights) but yesterday there was no charge so it ran down to 0% battery last night and hasn’t recovered because there’s still no sun today
The other Heltec v3.1 is in my window upstairs and so I’m back to how it was when I only had that one Heltec, which is, nothing works, no messages go out, no messages are happening
I now think it’s a mistake to have two or more Meshtastic stations near to each other – they’ll receive each other’s messages making you think the messages are going out, but in reality they’re going no further than just between each other and that’s all #Meshtastic
