Last Notes npub1h2wa5602p7ngq5q2fc205ll5pe46th0fgjd2msghtrleuw66jdfqcaf0hs Tom Alt text: Four-panel comic. 1: a man gestures proudly at a large computer, saying, "My genius machine will find solutions to all the world's problems!" 2: the machine shakes saying, "Thinking..." 3: the machine says, "You already have all the solutions. You just refuse to implement them to protect the financial interests of the wealthiest 0.001%". 4: the machine's screen has gone dark, as the man unplugs it, muttering "It just needs some tweaking." npub1h2wa5602p7ngq5q2fc205ll5pe46th0fgjd2msghtrleuw66jdfqcaf0hs Tom Apart from Europe and California (thank you both for your early service) nearly every country that has adopted renewables has done so for energy access or energy security. While the Israeli-USA Iran war may still turn out to be an existential event to the world economy, if it can be navigated through without too much suffering it will probably be the biggest boost to global renewables deployment ever. #energy #energytransition #energyIndependence #energySecurity npub1h2wa5602p7ngq5q2fc205ll5pe46th0fgjd2msghtrleuw66jdfqcaf0hs Tom Underwhelming? Global EV sales growth of 20% YoY in 2025? Am I missing something? Certainly BESS is growing fast too, and the overcapacity issue there means they are looking for opportunities all over but is the Global EV market "underwhelming"? npub1h2wa5602p7ngq5q2fc205ll5pe46th0fgjd2msghtrleuw66jdfqcaf0hs Tom Storage does have a long way to go OTOH it went from ~7 GW / ~11 GWh in 2018 to ~270 GW / ~617 GWh in the 7 years from 2018 - 2025 and that was while it was finding its feet. So its got the legs. OTOH, Scandinavia's long, cold, dark winters probably make it a better case for some Nuclear than pretty much anywhere else. npub1h2wa5602p7ngq5q2fc205ll5pe46th0fgjd2msghtrleuw66jdfqcaf0hs Tom The Irony is that Swedish home grown BWRs are some of the fastest to build reactors around. Partnering with Japan(?) & Sweden could build one in less than 10 years. Solar & storage (& wind) are getting cheaper & faster to power, but with the big seasonal swings might nuclear make some sense? At least as a component? What must not happen is to put solar, wind &storage projects on hold while waiting for "the nuclear fix", 'cos 10 years is a long time for renewables tech. npub1h2wa5602p7ngq5q2fc205ll5pe46th0fgjd2msghtrleuw66jdfqcaf0hs Tom What are the numbers here? Honest question, has there been an announcement or something? npub1h2wa5602p7ngq5q2fc205ll5pe46th0fgjd2msghtrleuw66jdfqcaf0hs Tom @npub1nzf…lckw I know we aren't in the EU but can we lobby to do this too please? (Repeal our equivalent of Article 6) (and can you tell your Southern compatriots to get a Mastadon account!?) npub1h2wa5602p7ngq5q2fc205ll5pe46th0fgjd2msghtrleuw66jdfqcaf0hs Tom @npub1nzf…lckw @npub1pnw…qhcz Interested to know about Scotland too. npub1h2wa5602p7ngq5q2fc205ll5pe46th0fgjd2msghtrleuw66jdfqcaf0hs Tom Yes the last 10% will be hard, yes we should probably consume less stuff, yes capitalism. But right now we have proven technologies, available at the necessary scale to real make some serious progress; and they are actually cheaper than doing the wrong things. The "easy" parts make up 80-90% of the problem, so we can fix 80-90% of the problem now. Literally the only thing stopping us is that leaders all over the world chose not to do so. #energytransition #climatechange #energy 2/2 npub1h2wa5602p7ngq5q2fc205ll5pe46th0fgjd2msghtrleuw66jdfqcaf0hs Tom I know its techno optimism, but forgive me. There are so many solutions available now that could massively accelerate mitigations to our current climate woes. Solar, wind and batteries (and big nukes where they make sense) for power. Heat pumps for low grade industrial heating and home haeting. >1800C heat batteries for industrial heat. Even properly biodegradable plastics to help with direct pollution. #energytransition #climatechange #energy 1/2 npub1h2wa5602p7ngq5q2fc205ll5pe46th0fgjd2msghtrleuw66jdfqcaf0hs Tom https://38d.gs/eurovision-bbc-df npub1h2wa5602p7ngq5q2fc205ll5pe46th0fgjd2msghtrleuw66jdfqcaf0hs Tom Up to a point, Norway is a bit of a special case as it is totally self sufficient. But if Greek and Baltic windfarms want to fill in each other's gaps and Southern European solar wants to get to Denmark than Germany becomes the natural route for the interconnectors and others will pay soame of it. But, yes, Germany certainly needs to get moving on building stuff! (Yeah, I know, "or we could all just go nuclear") npub1h2wa5602p7ngq5q2fc205ll5pe46th0fgjd2msghtrleuw66jdfqcaf0hs Tom On a related note I am thoroughly enjoying https://www.penguin.co.uk/books/465161/breakneck-by-wang-dan/9780241729175 It is an excellent overview of the strengths, weaknesses of the China model. And has a lot to say about America too. npub1h2wa5602p7ngq5q2fc205ll5pe46th0fgjd2msghtrleuw66jdfqcaf0hs Tom There are some interesting discussions going on about how the rest of the global south develops if China makes everything cheaper than everyone else (which seems to be their aim). It's a problem, but also an opportunity to develop fairly and without the environmental and social costs of the western extractive model. OTOH China may simply become the next extractive hegemon, or one of two or three. npub1h2wa5602p7ngq5q2fc205ll5pe46th0fgjd2msghtrleuw66jdfqcaf0hs Tom It is an inescapable fact that China has scaled its electro tech output to the level where, if everyone took advantage of it the energy transition could massively accelerate. The issues now are geopolitical. Can the global south develop a development and trade model that leverages this without simply creating a new Hegemon? China has the potential to lead that, I am not sure if it really sees the need and is willing to give enough away to acheive it. npub1h2wa5602p7ngq5q2fc205ll5pe46th0fgjd2msghtrleuw66jdfqcaf0hs Tom Where did the community broadband resistance come from? I do not know this story. npub1h2wa5602p7ngq5q2fc205ll5pe46th0fgjd2msghtrleuw66jdfqcaf0hs Tom China (actually, I am not sure on the nuclear number, found it hard to find progress figures). npub1h2wa5602p7ngq5q2fc205ll5pe46th0fgjd2msghtrleuw66jdfqcaf0hs Tom I think these numbers are approximately correct for 2025: Generation additions Source TWh Solar 436 Wind 254 Nuclear 21 Total 711 Demand growth Growth 684 FF saving 27 So that's about 3-6 coal plants that can be closed (they average 50% capacity) Clean power deployment is growing faster than electricity demand (even as China electrifies more things) so this should be the start of the FF replacement. #energytransition npub1h2wa5602p7ngq5q2fc205ll5pe46th0fgjd2msghtrleuw66jdfqcaf0hs Tom Listening to an economist/trader yesterday. Said the first signal that the collapse is getting close is when "respectable" institutions start saying that the "fundamentals have changed" and "this new technology has actually changed the economic rules". Fuck it. npub1h2wa5602p7ngq5q2fc205ll5pe46th0fgjd2msghtrleuw66jdfqcaf0hs Tom "Trump (a man who never met a grievance that was too petty to pursue) orders Tim Cook (a man who never found a boot he wouldn't lick)" Brutal! 🤣 npub1h2wa5602p7ngq5q2fc205ll5pe46th0fgjd2msghtrleuw66jdfqcaf0hs Tom To paraphrase Upton Sinclair: "It’s difficult to get a man to understand something when his _astronomical future income_ depends on his not understanding it." npub1h2wa5602p7ngq5q2fc205ll5pe46th0fgjd2msghtrleuw66jdfqcaf0hs Tom UK has used CfDs for renewables and nuclear for over 10 years. What's happened? npub1h2wa5602p7ngq5q2fc205ll5pe46th0fgjd2msghtrleuw66jdfqcaf0hs Tom I'll bite. I don't think it can be done if we continue to practice the capitalist model exported from the USA over the past 50 years. If we went back to the model practiced between the 1940s and 70s then maybe. If the we moved to a form much more like the Scandies maybe. But the current version; neoliberal, oligarchic, maximum inequality, quarterly time horizons, nope. We need more planning and coordinated vision than it can provide. npub1h2wa5602p7ngq5q2fc205ll5pe46th0fgjd2msghtrleuw66jdfqcaf0hs Tom I worry that many (most) companies have a significant number of senior leaders who have publicly committed enough emotional capital to AI already being a success that cognitive dissonance will lead them to double down when the data shows it is failing rather than course correcting. Like the doomsday cult who, when the end of the world didn't happen, simply strengthened their beliefs. npub1h2wa5602p7ngq5q2fc205ll5pe46th0fgjd2msghtrleuw66jdfqcaf0hs Tom https://www.youtube.com/shorts/THHLR1wa8Qo @npub17v8…nhln nails it again. #ice #uspol npub1h2wa5602p7ngq5q2fc205ll5pe46th0fgjd2msghtrleuw66jdfqcaf0hs Tom #LazyFedi Saw this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qwo3i1s_zKU and was wondering, does China and Chinese companies see third party repair as: - An ideological good - Supporting it as competitive advantage? - Just "what you do"? - Something they not got around to restricting yet? I mean, especially in the global South it feels like it coud be a big competitive advantage. Would losing sales in a growing market change John Deer's behaviour? Anyone have any links or data? #righttorepair @npub1fdr…lvhs npub1h2wa5602p7ngq5q2fc205ll5pe46th0fgjd2msghtrleuw66jdfqcaf0hs Tom Have you read or listened to https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Unaccountability_Machine ? It has an interesting take on Cybernetics and Stafford Beer's theories that grew out of it (including Chile's Cybersyn and Cybernetics vs neo-liberal economics) npub1h2wa5602p7ngq5q2fc205ll5pe46th0fgjd2msghtrleuw66jdfqcaf0hs Tom C'mon its a totally bonkers headline that wasn't on anyone's 2025 Bingo card! August is always a slow news month. Of course they all ran it. (wow, just checked, they really did ALL run it!) npub1h2wa5602p7ngq5q2fc205ll5pe46th0fgjd2msghtrleuw66jdfqcaf0hs Tom That makes sense. I think there is a good chance that Africa (& much of "The Global South") drifts into solar & storage making up the majority of its generation needs at all scales. So that when nuclear gets its game on it will be pushing into a mature, well served market with a grid built for distributed generation. That deployment is starting now, is distributed & outside of government control & thus freer of corruption & more resilient to regime changes. npub1h2wa5602p7ngq5q2fc205ll5pe46th0fgjd2msghtrleuw66jdfqcaf0hs Tom I think your direction of travel is right but your timescale is a bit optimistic and the winner will probably be China in the medium term. European and US supply chains are just gearing up to build PWRs at scale, this is probabaly a 5 to 10 year programme so they will be desperate to recoup some of the investment. 1/n npub1h2wa5602p7ngq5q2fc205ll5pe46th0fgjd2msghtrleuw66jdfqcaf0hs Tom It is worth a listen. npub1h2wa5602p7ngq5q2fc205ll5pe46th0fgjd2msghtrleuw66jdfqcaf0hs Tom We know how to build nuclear for a reasonable cost. - Stable and supportive regulatory and policy environment - Standardised design (doesn't have to be an SMR) with a good pipeline - Good project management (for that design) - Robust and reliable supply chains and ecosystem (for that design) - In depth human capital (for that design) Canada is throwing its existing advantages away by pivoting from CANDU. 2/2 npub1h2wa5602p7ngq5q2fc205ll5pe46th0fgjd2msghtrleuw66jdfqcaf0hs Tom I think a summary of the arguments are: - Its not really an SMR anymore, more of an MMR (current estimate CAD 4.5 billion) - Its an N0 not N1 (it's being built on site to relaxed geological tolerances) the real N1 will be the second one on site, build starting in 2031/32 (assuming schedules are kept) - The big fleet wins are already available in Canada with the CANDU human capital and supply chains built for the refurbs. These will now be lost. 1/2 npub1h2wa5602p7ngq5q2fc205ll5pe46th0fgjd2msghtrleuw66jdfqcaf0hs Tom and storage, never forget the storage, it makes both baseload and intermitent sources dispatchable and more efficient. npub1h2wa5602p7ngq5q2fc205ll5pe46th0fgjd2msghtrleuw66jdfqcaf0hs Tom Napkin math time (unchecked, I may be very wrong, feel free to mock me). Nigeria, with an energy demand of 40TWh annually needs a generation capacity of just over 4.5GW Using the Ember report numbers you could build that, today, for ~$20 billion, with reasonable chances of getting close to projected costs and timescales. Nigeria is projected to have 3.5GW of hydro that can get them over the tricky last 1%. npub1h2wa5602p7ngq5q2fc205ll5pe46th0fgjd2msghtrleuw66jdfqcaf0hs Tom This is exciting: https://ember-energy.org/latest-insights/solar-electricity-every-hour-of-every-day-is-here-and-it-changes-everything/ Could be a real game changer in Africa especially (and battery prices still have a long way to fall!). #renewables #solar #batteries #BESS npub1h2wa5602p7ngq5q2fc205ll5pe46th0fgjd2msghtrleuw66jdfqcaf0hs Tom Nuclear is not inherently more dangerous than other forms of energy (https://ourworldindata.org/grapher/death-rates-from-energy-production-per-twh), it is certainly massively safer than coal or gas which have already killed millions) it simply needs different processes. Which we rarely invest in, which is part of the problem caused by that lack of stability. 4/4 npub1h2wa5602p7ngq5q2fc205ll5pe46th0fgjd2msghtrleuw66jdfqcaf0hs Tom The primary killer of nuclear was not public opposition, it was cheap gas along with Regan and Thatcher’s anti-state rhetoric. Public opposition was a thing but if the economics had remained strong there would have been more effort to bring people along. 3/4 npub1h2wa5602p7ngq5q2fc205ll5pe46th0fgjd2msghtrleuw66jdfqcaf0hs Tom It’s not inherently more expensive (just check South Korea’s costs). The neoliberal West is just very bad at stuff like this. The problem is that the West (with the UK & USA leading the charge) is bad at big infrastructure. The impact of Neoliberalism & media oligopoly on politics has crippled our ability to do anything long term. Whether its renewables, transmission, transport or any other infra programme you need stable decade(s) long planning horizons. 2/4 npub1h2wa5602p7ngq5q2fc205ll5pe46th0fgjd2msghtrleuw66jdfqcaf0hs Tom This far from the equator #nuclear makes sense. It does not obviate the need for more #renewables and storage. A good faith “all of the above” _is_ possible. If we are going to build nuclear it needs to be a current, licensed design that we, or someone we trust has recent experience of. This basically means EPRs which we have actual experience with now. Ironically Hinkley C, Olkiluto and Flamanville make the likely size of cost overruns much smaller. 1/4 npub1h2wa5602p7ngq5q2fc205ll5pe46th0fgjd2msghtrleuw66jdfqcaf0hs Tom Not sure what this really means for nuclear? I mean Susquehanna was commissioned in 1983 so it is not like it is new capacity. Will the primary impact not simply be that other Pennsylvania power bills go up as they lose a couple GW from the supply they were already using? because Amazon now has priority? I guess they'll build extra FF to fill the void? but that's OK 'cos Amazon's power will be clean. npub1h2wa5602p7ngq5q2fc205ll5pe46th0fgjd2msghtrleuw66jdfqcaf0hs Tom Hmm according to Reuters: "The global development bank, which lends at low rates to help countries build everything from flood barriers to railroads, decided in 2013 to stop funding nuclear power projects." Are we talking different banks? or different bans? npub1h2wa5602p7ngq5q2fc205ll5pe46th0fgjd2msghtrleuw66jdfqcaf0hs Tom No longer an EU citizen 😟 npub1h2wa5602p7ngq5q2fc205ll5pe46th0fgjd2msghtrleuw66jdfqcaf0hs Tom This is not violating patents and stealing industrial secrets its about reverse engineering. The DMCA effectively says "If I say this latch is a lock then it is illegal for you to open the hood of your car to fix it", US trading partners had to sign up to enforcing it locally if they wanted trade deals. This is simply saying, "fuck that, we'll fix our cars ourselves". The entire PC and peripherals industry was built on reverse engineering & that turned out pretty well. npub1h2wa5602p7ngq5q2fc205ll5pe46th0fgjd2msghtrleuw66jdfqcaf0hs Tom No, no, no. That would be chaos! Only the really important rich white dudes should have a genie because they are are philosopher kings with a deep understanding of what is best for the rest of us. (At least that is what ChatGPT, Grok abd Claude said when I asked them) npub1h2wa5602p7ngq5q2fc205ll5pe46th0fgjd2msghtrleuw66jdfqcaf0hs Tom While it would be a good thing, I don't think it will happen. Not until, say, a few BWRX-300 are actually operational elswhere. No significant domestic commercial lending to build reactors initially, too risky. Government needs to pick some winners & put together a 10 year+, guaranteed investment, training, & support program for the ramp up. Nuclear needs people to believe there is a long term commitment and stable policy environment. Neither available in the USA right now.
