I was able to re-create this tiling pattern that I had previously seen from @nprofile…c5q6 . I'm not sure what to call this, maybe an "irregular pythagorean tiling"?
Also my implementation might not be completely correct because there are some minor imperfections and overlaps, especially near the origin (maybe it's expected?).

@nprofile…89v9 Thank you! The circle packing is computed first. Each center point is assigned a "lightness value" which can be done in different ways, such as sampling from a pre-rendered image or by casting a ray onto a virtual scene.
Then the lightness value is converted into an orientation for each instance sphere such that the appropriate amount of white or black is shown.

@nprofile…2yld the frequency is a function of cumulative brightness along the curve, time, and the parametric distance along the curve.

@nprofile…dr5j one thing I did to avoid discontinuities: for each point on each horizontal line, calculate the cumulative lightness value going from left to right. Then use this (times some factor) to drive the wave.

2025-01-13 16:30:57 GMT

- reply

@nprofile…dr5j looks like in your gif the image value only affects the amplitude of the wave? I think the only difference is my version affects the frequency.
