José is the friendliest person on the internet. He is very active on forums and github, gives lots of public talks, always ready to help, comments on all issues and PRs, and is very-very supportive. And the community growing around the passion project of this amazing person is small and friendly. I wish it stays that way.

My code-golf-ready solution:
repl = lambda m: f'{len(m.group(1))}'
re.sub('\w(\w{3,})\w', repl, text)
Or something like this, I can't check it from phone. I think it might eat away the first and last letter but it should be easy to make repl a normal function that includes them.
I wonder if I can make it more cursed. Go full regex, perhaps? 🤔

#GitHub should make issues and discussions disabled by default when creating a new project. #FOSS doesn't mean it comes with support or warranty (and all OSS licenses explicitly state that it doesn't) and you shouldn't expect individual developers (and especially newcomers that don't know what features and why they should disable) moderate communities around their projects, help everyone with everything, and fix all reported issues.
