One of the bright spots about the loose ends is how some record could be released (or indexed) at any moment to provide a clue. The people who suddenly appear or disappear are mysteries just begging ro be solved. It sounds like you solved one. That must be satisfying. I saw a marker somewhere that had a line added stating where the burial actually is. Are you considering doing something like that? npub1h68jm34h0ufev4d0f4syxecsnjjjwll3wnadgcrsk09ullurhpps2gpwf2 HistorySheWrote @nprofile…4fhg Exactly. The why is so much more intriguing than the event itself. Sometimes it's easy to understand our ancestral families and sometimes it's hard. It was surprising to see the list of things being mined in MI and elsewhere. One of my ancestors is not with his family in the 1880 census. I suspect he was away somewhere mining. The where and what has always been a mystery. npub1h68jm34h0ufev4d0f4syxecsnjjjwll3wnadgcrsk09ullurhpps2gpwf2 HistorySheWrote Don't spin me around. #Wordle 1,714 4/6 ⬜⬜⬜⬜⬜ ⬜⬜⬜⬜🟨 ⬜🟩🟨⬜🟩 🟩🟩🟩🟩🟩 Happy Friday and TGIF! #OldGal #YoungPups npub1h68jm34h0ufev4d0f4syxecsnjjjwll3wnadgcrsk09ullurhpps2gpwf2 HistorySheWrote @nprofile…4fhg Wonky website, indeed. I knew there was mining in the UP, but was this in lower MI? npub1h68jm34h0ufev4d0f4syxecsnjjjwll3wnadgcrsk09ullurhpps2gpwf2 HistorySheWrote @nprofile…4fhg I didn't know Buffalo was so ethnically diverse. I bet it goes right back to it being a transportation hub. One of my Revolutionary War ancestors from Virginia was considered wild and crazy because he had dared to venture west of the Appalachians before the war. I suspect the westward migration after the war followed the bounty lands being offered to the soldiers. And there were those who followed the frontier as it moved west. Were your ancestors drawn to MI by the industry? Some of mine certainly were. npub1h68jm34h0ufev4d0f4syxecsnjjjwll3wnadgcrsk09ullurhpps2gpwf2 HistorySheWrote @nprofile…4fhg I had not realized there was a land company involved with the Erie Canal. But of course that makes sense because settlement and commerce follows transportation routes. And we have to follow the money. Thanks for the link to the article. I found an article on the NYG&B website about NY and Gretna Greens. On a second page they list some marriages that were in unexpected places either outside NY or inside NY. It doesn't seem like it was a common occurrence, or at least they don't say that. (Unlike SW MI couples marrying in Indiana, which was common.) https://www.newyorkfamilyhistory.org/blog/gretna-green-wedding-destinations-new-york npub1h68jm34h0ufev4d0f4syxecsnjjjwll3wnadgcrsk09ullurhpps2gpwf2 HistorySheWrote @nprofile…4fhg Now to a Buffalo question. Not long ago, I found a clue that gave me new pathways. My great-grandfather Crispen, talked about his boyhood near the Adirondacks and the Erie Canal, though he was born in Oil City, PA. This never made any sense to me, but I knew his parents had split up and eventually divorced. His mother Kerr was born in Clarion County, PA. She married for the third time in NYC in 1882, using the surname Deuel, indexed as Deuer. This was an unexpected find. She was in NYC in the 1880 census with that surname, but not a husband. I do see that surname in the Buffalo area. So the clues seem to point there. I cannot find a marriage record in NY for Crispen-Deuel. That marriage should have been between 1867 (Crispen divorce filed) or 1874 (divorce granted) and 1880 (census). Do you know if people in Buffalo would have gone elsewhere to get married, like a Gretna Green? The lack of PA vital records in that timeframe is frustrating. My best hope is NY records. #genealogy 4/x npub1h68jm34h0ufev4d0f4syxecsnjjjwll3wnadgcrsk09ullurhpps2gpwf2 HistorySheWrote @nprofile…4fhg Dad's immigrants (1849-1891) mostly arrived in New York before Ellis Island. They headed to Chicago and Cincinnati. One journey was to Boston during the timeframe in the 1880s when the passenger lists are missing or unavailable. That is a frustrating gap. There were family members who sailed into New Orleans and settled in western Missouri. Others were headed via NYC to Wisconsin and to the UP of Michigan. I suspect they used Great Lakes ships due to a lack of railroads in Wisconsin. But how did they get from NYC to the ships? Would the Erie Canal have been used in the 1850-1870 timeframe? Or were railroads taking over by then? Thoughts? #genealogy 3/x npub1h68jm34h0ufev4d0f4syxecsnjjjwll3wnadgcrsk09ullurhpps2gpwf2 HistorySheWrote @nprofile…4fhg My Mom's side and one of Dad's lines were in the colonies before the Revolutionary War. For most of these lines, I have no clue as to who the immigrants were or when they arrived. There were documented Philadelphia arrivals (1729) and early Virginia arrivals, with one likely landing at Jamestown (1670s). I suspect Baltimore and Charleston also were used by settlers in those areas, as well as ports like New York and Boston. For many of my ancestors, the Shenandoah Valley was a migration route from Pennsylvania into Virginia and the Carolinas and westward to Tennessee. Some of my northern maternal ancestors settled north of Pittsburgh, near Oil City. Others started in Maryland and, over the generations, kept moving west, through western PA to Ohio and beyond. #genealogy 2/x npub1h68jm34h0ufev4d0f4syxecsnjjjwll3wnadgcrsk09ullurhpps2gpwf2 HistorySheWrote @nprofile…4fhg Ok, I had to think about this. I am going to leave it public as others may have thoughts and questions. You asked about arrival and destination of ancestors. None of mine settled in the Buffalo area, though I am going to ask a couple of related questions. I have two different perspectives. Dad (mostly 19th century immigrants) and Mom (deep US roots). Those deep-rooted ancestors were a restless bunch. Sometimes I envy researchers who have only a few locations to focus on. #genealogy 1/x npub1h68jm34h0ufev4d0f4syxecsnjjjwll3wnadgcrsk09ullurhpps2gpwf2 HistorySheWrote I have several packages arriving today.
