BANKING THE UNBANKED. This is “N”, an 8-year old boy, near the top of his class, and a disciplined saver in the only money he and his family know: fiat. Today, I taught him about Bitcoin: internet money that cannot be debased. I also taught him how fiat money works, why currencies lose value, and why prices are designed to rise over time. Both he and his uncle don’t have bank accounts. Through his uncle, he will be saving in Bitcoin over (hopefully) a long time through a project called Bitcoin Savings Program. I intend to train him to become a Bitcoin lecturer so he can teach fellow Filipinos about Bitcoin and how to use it. By the time he becomes a teenager, he will be training fellow students and Filipino professionals about sound money.

About a year ago, I accepted the position of dean of a law school to teach and build on Bitcoin. Dropped the formal attire for shirts, taught a course on Money and State, wrote a book, spoke to anyone who listened, attended conferences, and learned from fellow bitcoiners. The exchange rate of bitcoin then was around $16K. It’s been an interesting year.
The next few years will be even more interesting. These days, I see working on Bitcoin both as advocacy and professional work, and the larger goal is to make as many people as possible understand Bitcoin as a real store of value and medium of exchange that is immune to manipulation. Those willing to learn will see the world differently, find hope, and see optimism in these challenging times. They will find like minded people who share a vision of a future that is more fair, where people are more empowered and self-reliant.
Happy to ride this wave. Excited and thankful to be part of this peaceful global movement for fairness.

When central banks create money, they don’t create value. What money printing does is take value from those who have money, and put it in the newly created money. The first to receive that new money are able to “invest” or dump that new money into real estate, stocks, bonds, artwork, etc. Who loses from this system? This is Atan and Paul, my companions at Kalayaan Homestead. Every month this year, they’ve been receiving Sats or Satoshis in addition to their salaries. Like half of the Philippine population, they belong to the “unbanked”—people who have no bank accounts and have no access to the financial rails of the country. To be unbanked is to be handicapped and have impaired ability to buy and save. This is a global problem.
Bitcoin solves this problem because 12 words give you access to money and a savings account that cannot be inflated by governments. With a few conversations here and there, they’ve started to know the meaning of sound money.
Imagine when this becomes a reality for families, barangays, indigenous peoples, cooperatives, savings and loan associations. People individually and collectively having access to a new financial system, bypassing the old one.
A former President famously said, “you can’t eat human rights.” Bitcoin makes the right to property real for the disadvantaged, allowing them to plan for the future and save their labor in a form of money secured by energy and protected from politics.
Bitcoin is hope.

Bitcoin for individuals is easy, either a person gets it by gut or gets it five or 10 years later. I’m already on to the next step, bitcoin for institutions (e.g. conglomerates, corporations, and co-operatives). It is in this context that I’d like to give Prof. Florin’s bitcoin book its plaudits and critique.
The book is a game of two halves. The first (Chapters 1 to 7), a disguised deconstruction of our mental concept of “money,” masquerading as a series of bedtime stories. The second (Chapters 8 to 15), a careful construction of the rational argument for bitcoin. Two faces of the same coin, pun intended. The writing is at once free and cohesive for such a normally elusive subject. Tempered and disciplined in the details it covers and what it doesn’t. Measured, without being compromising. Deep dives, without getting lost in the moment.
This work is firm on its foundations, without getting distracted by things that usually elicit the vitriol of bitcoiners the world over: the highway robberies being conducted in broad daylight by charlatans and barons in the parallel universe of crypto, altcoins, and “shitcoins.” The message seems to be, “Not now. Pick your battles. There’s time for everything.”
This is a time of congratulations. Half of it goes to Dean Hilbay. Half of it has to go to Silliman University (est. 1901) for launching the book and for putting its academic armada behind it. This is a first-mover advantage, a unique intellectual value proposition that will serve the university very well in the years to come.

Fiat is debt. It is only acceptable because of legal tender laws. To make it attractive, governments promise yield on the debt they issue. Effectively, this is a promise to pay with more fiat money. As this process progresses, this pile of debt and debt on debt soon becomes one giant pyramid. Like any other pyramid, it is only a matter of ‘when’ until everything comes crashing down.
Thankfully, people all over the world now have an alternative.

The relevant comparison is not between satoshis or dollars or pesos but among different satoshis or dollars or pesos in space and time (in the US, the Philippines, the Antarctic AND yesterday, today, and tomorrow).
