Last Notes npub1hcjuyjtn9d28gdwhhza9hk5mv32arjkcnexa0k57sg63vten53ksvce5me Jon Hicks Our “youngest” is 23 today. Crikey! npub1hcjuyjtn9d28gdwhhza9hk5mv32arjkcnexa0k57sg63vten53ksvce5me Jon Hicks @nprofile…lel8 Yeah, I have high hopes for it. It was what drove me to update to Tahoe. At the moment it feels like a decent but basic player - doesn't do any of the ‘special' things I'm looking for. npub1hcjuyjtn9d28gdwhhza9hk5mv32arjkcnexa0k57sg63vten53ksvce5me Jon Hicks @nprofile…twh5 @nprofile…d9hu @nprofile…zcwj I wonder how practical this is for artists? Would it not require a certain level of technical ability? Presumably you’d need a centralised hub to browse/search? npub1hcjuyjtn9d28gdwhhza9hk5mv32arjkcnexa0k57sg63vten53ksvce5me Jon Hicks Cottoned on (very late in life) to tinned sardines. Gorgeous packaging, long shelf life, a tasty posh meal in a can for just a couple pounds. Also, frying eggs in the fishy olive oil to go with them 👌 npub1hcjuyjtn9d28gdwhhza9hk5mv32arjkcnexa0k57sg63vten53ksvce5me Jon Hicks @nprofile…lel8 Gawd, as always, bless you. Listening to earlier episodes I sound way too perky, but felt recent ones were too monotone, almost miserable. Tried to find a middle ground with this one npub1hcjuyjtn9d28gdwhhza9hk5mv32arjkcnexa0k57sg63vten53ksvce5me Jon Hicks I couldn’t let episode #59 of Troika be anything else but a celebration of one of my favourite bands: Starflyer 59. I've been besotted with them for over thirty years, and as such, it’s going to be a quadruple dose of Troika this time! npub1hcjuyjtn9d28gdwhhza9hk5mv32arjkcnexa0k57sg63vten53ksvce5me Jon Hicks “In April 2024, Spotify implemented a new scheme: songs with less than 1k streams per year would no longer receive royalties. npub1hcjuyjtn9d28gdwhhza9hk5mv32arjkcnexa0k57sg63vten53ksvce5me Jon Hicks An extra slice of ho, ho, ho to you all! I decided to do a quick Troika episode this afternoon, so Episode #58, Hickensian Christmas III. I features alternative festive tunes, all from bands on the Sonic Cathedral label: Deary, Pye Corner Audio and Dawn Chorus & the Infallible Sea. npub1hcjuyjtn9d28gdwhhza9hk5mv32arjkcnexa0k57sg63vten53ksvce5me Jon Hicks The one I’ve been waiting for. Colly always puts so much effort in to his end of year roundups, and there’s loads here I’ve not listened to, but will be npub1hcjuyjtn9d28gdwhhza9hk5mv32arjkcnexa0k57sg63vten53ksvce5me Jon Hicks I've just posted my Annual Report, highlighting my favourite albums, gigs and books of 2025. npub1hcjuyjtn9d28gdwhhza9hk5mv32arjkcnexa0k57sg63vten53ksvce5me Jon Hicks “If everyone who streamed All Hell on Spotify had done so using Tidal instead, we would have received an extra £31,847.38, which would double the amount we made from streaming of the album in this time period. Or if everyone used Apple Music it would have been £12,331 more.” npub1hcjuyjtn9d28gdwhhza9hk5mv32arjkcnexa0k57sg63vten53ksvce5me Jon Hicks Wordpress folks: I have a client that is steadfastly WP, and currently uses Elementor, which for someone who loves the cascade, minimal scripting and clean code is absolute torture. npub1hcjuyjtn9d28gdwhhza9hk5mv32arjkcnexa0k57sg63vten53ksvce5me Jon Hicks Those mornings when I force myself to eat porridge instead of eggs, are the mornings where I'm hungry again by 10:00am 🤨 npub1hcjuyjtn9d28gdwhhza9hk5mv32arjkcnexa0k57sg63vten53ksvce5me Jon Hicks I’m out already, at the hands of @nprofile…99ep npub1hcjuyjtn9d28gdwhhza9hk5mv32arjkcnexa0k57sg63vten53ksvce5me Jon Hicks @nprofile…mlwg @nprofile…plsf delight is never pointless npub1hcjuyjtn9d28gdwhhza9hk5mv32arjkcnexa0k57sg63vten53ksvce5me Jon Hicks @nprofile…plsf There are rumours! But last night was very much a greatest hits - a good spread of Bends -> Moon Shaped Pool, but mostly In Rainbows. npub1hcjuyjtn9d28gdwhhza9hk5mv32arjkcnexa0k57sg63vten53ksvce5me Jon Hicks Yesterday was all about Stars of the Lid, tonight it’s all about… npub1hcjuyjtn9d28gdwhhza9hk5mv32arjkcnexa0k57sg63vten53ksvce5me Jon Hicks Side project launch time! npub1hcjuyjtn9d28gdwhhza9hk5mv32arjkcnexa0k57sg63vten53ksvce5me Jon Hicks M&S Ho Ho Ho-Ney Mustard Ham Hock with cheesy Cornish Cove mayonnaise npub1hcjuyjtn9d28gdwhhza9hk5mv32arjkcnexa0k57sg63vten53ksvce5me Jon Hicks Waiting, with a little anxiety, to see what the Affinity announcement is today https://affinity.serif.com/en-gb/ npub1hcjuyjtn9d28gdwhhza9hk5mv32arjkcnexa0k57sg63vten53ksvce5me Jon Hicks 53. npub1hcjuyjtn9d28gdwhhza9hk5mv32arjkcnexa0k57sg63vten53ksvce5me Jon Hicks This weekend in Rye, we came across Soap & Salvation, such an amazing (and expensive!) shop. Amongst many other lovely items, they had a stock of original master drawings for letters, used as the matrices for making brass moulds at the Linotype Foundry in Manchester, 1908 – 1942. They all had handwritten annotations and @nprofile…cxze bought me one for my upcoming birthday ❤️ npub1hcjuyjtn9d28gdwhhza9hk5mv32arjkcnexa0k57sg63vten53ksvce5me Jon Hicks Lovely bank holiday weekend with so much going on, but the highlight was surely @nprofile…6vhk and @nprofile…xthq coming down to Oxford to see the Stanley Donwood & Thom Yorke exhibition with us! 🤗 npub1hcjuyjtn9d28gdwhhza9hk5mv32arjkcnexa0k57sg63vten53ksvce5me Jon Hicks @nprofile…rnt9 yess! 🫡 npub1hcjuyjtn9d28gdwhhza9hk5mv32arjkcnexa0k57sg63vten53ksvce5me Jon Hicks In my search for the "perfect" music app, Adrian Schönig's @nprofile…dmgl is the closest match I've found yet. The MacOS app has been out of beta for a couple of weeks now, and I've been enjoying it, a lot! npub1hcjuyjtn9d28gdwhhza9hk5mv32arjkcnexa0k57sg63vten53ksvce5me Jon Hicks @nprofile…rnt9 TBH I'm not sure what happens to local files - they probably stay. To be clear, it's the Apple Music data that is wiped. npub1hcjuyjtn9d28gdwhhza9hk5mv32arjkcnexa0k57sg63vten53ksvce5me Jon Hicks @nprofile…rnt9 Yeah, I’d previously let my subscription lapse for months/years and the data was always there when I got back. Not anymore! npub1hcjuyjtn9d28gdwhhza9hk5mv32arjkcnexa0k57sg63vten53ksvce5me Jon Hicks Revisiting Tidal after some months away (because Apple Music is doing my nut), it looks like some stuff off my wishlist has been added: npub1hcjuyjtn9d28gdwhhza9hk5mv32arjkcnexa0k57sg63vten53ksvce5me Jon Hicks @nprofile…y2ut I missed off the word space when I first read that 🤪 npub1hcjuyjtn9d28gdwhhza9hk5mv32arjkcnexa0k57sg63vten53ksvce5me Jon Hicks Finally made it to the V&A East Storehouse this weekend, to see my icons in use. When the actual V&A East Museum opens next year there'll be even more on show, but such a thrill to see these in real life. npub1hcjuyjtn9d28gdwhhza9hk5mv32arjkcnexa0k57sg63vten53ksvce5me Jon Hicks In the “always has been” astronauts meme, I’d always thought the gun was being pointed at the other astronaut. Apparently not, but it makes more sense now😕 npub1hcjuyjtn9d28gdwhhza9hk5mv32arjkcnexa0k57sg63vten53ksvce5me Jon Hicks @nprofile…rnt9 a dead one at least npub1hcjuyjtn9d28gdwhhza9hk5mv32arjkcnexa0k57sg63vten53ksvce5me Jon Hicks Aw another cute Cotswold house npub1hcjuyjtn9d28gdwhhza9hk5mv32arjkcnexa0k57sg63vten53ksvce5me Jon Hicks @nprofile…rnt9 Just to be sure, are you familiar with Scarfolk at all? https://scarfolk.blogspot.com npub1hcjuyjtn9d28gdwhhza9hk5mv32arjkcnexa0k57sg63vten53ksvce5me Jon Hicks An Ai generated band, that have released two albums, both last month, and have 554,000 monthly listeners on Spotify where they're a ‘verified artist’. This isn’t just a Spotify problem, they're on *all* the streaming platforms. npub1hcjuyjtn9d28gdwhhza9hk5mv32arjkcnexa0k57sg63vten53ksvce5me Jon Hicks I just got an article published …by Direct Tile Warehouse 😂 npub1hcjuyjtn9d28gdwhhza9hk5mv32arjkcnexa0k57sg63vten53ksvce5me Jon Hicks @nprofile…rnt9 so glad you finally finished and published this post! npub1hcjuyjtn9d28gdwhhza9hk5mv32arjkcnexa0k57sg63vten53ksvce5me Jon Hicks A week later, I’m giving Apple the benefit of the doubt that they’ll fix the wild contrast, corner radius and padding issues in MacOS Tahoe, but I can't help feeling the icons won't get touched again. They look so soft and out-of-focus - such a regressive step. npub1hcjuyjtn9d28gdwhhza9hk5mv32arjkcnexa0k57sg63vten53ksvce5me Jon Hicks I woke up to a malevolent presence holding me tightly down to the bed. I couldn't move, I couldn't speak. All I could manage was a kind of muffled grunt, in a vain attempt to fight back or call for help. npub1hcjuyjtn9d28gdwhhza9hk5mv32arjkcnexa0k57sg63vten53ksvce5me Jon Hicks This project was a dream to work on! To coincide with the launch of the new V&A East, the V&A approached me to consolidate and redesign their icon library to echo their new brand typeface Spiller. The result was a library of 217 new icons, with all the size versions of each bringing the total to 606. npub1hcjuyjtn9d28gdwhhza9hk5mv32arjkcnexa0k57sg63vten53ksvce5me Jon Hicks @nprofile…y2ut so spot on, thanks for writing this! npub1hcjuyjtn9d28gdwhhza9hk5mv32arjkcnexa0k57sg63vten53ksvce5me Jon Hicks I had the pleasure of working with the design team at Griffin Bank to update their brand logo. Originally developed by Johnson Banks, I built upon their work, creating a new monochrome version first, and then the colour version. It's the first time I've tried live sketching on a video call to speed up iteration and feedback time, and I'll definitely be doing that again. npub1hcjuyjtn9d28gdwhhza9hk5mv32arjkcnexa0k57sg63vten53ksvce5me Jon Hicks Pre-ordered!! 🙌 npub1hcjuyjtn9d28gdwhhza9hk5mv32arjkcnexa0k57sg63vten53ksvce5me Jon Hicks This is a big deal - beforehand it felt like social media window shopping. I found I interacted with posts less, as it took extra effort. Now it’s all in the same app! 🙌 npub1hcjuyjtn9d28gdwhhza9hk5mv32arjkcnexa0k57sg63vten53ksvce5me Jon Hicks For reasons I haven't quite worked out yet, I bought the photograph. It's not even very good quality print (see the pixel stepping on the top of the road sign). https://mastodon.social/@jonhicks/114377524511296771 npub1hcjuyjtn9d28gdwhhza9hk5mv32arjkcnexa0k57sg63vten53ksvce5me Jon Hicks Discovered these at the weekend - they really do taste like fried eggs - a mixture of the yolk and the crispy bits on the edge 🙌 npub1hcjuyjtn9d28gdwhhza9hk5mv32arjkcnexa0k57sg63vten53ksvce5me Jon Hicks Wow. I really thought Andor stopped at episode 9. Imagine my intense joy to find out there’s three more episodes this week! 🤗 npub1hcjuyjtn9d28gdwhhza9hk5mv32arjkcnexa0k57sg63vten53ksvce5me Jon Hicks Would love to have a Syril and Dedra spinoff series, but in the style of Terry & June. npub1hcjuyjtn9d28gdwhhza9hk5mv32arjkcnexa0k57sg63vten53ksvce5me Jon Hicks Mahna mahna npub1hcjuyjtn9d28gdwhhza9hk5mv32arjkcnexa0k57sg63vten53ksvce5me Jon Hicks @nprofile…f507 sounds like Jo Brands modus operandi. I think Jason will more than make up for any slack. npub1hcjuyjtn9d28gdwhhza9hk5mv32arjkcnexa0k57sg63vten53ksvce5me Jon Hicks If that’s just ‘please’ and ‘thankyou’, imagine what the whole prompt costs. npub1hcjuyjtn9d28gdwhhza9hk5mv32arjkcnexa0k57sg63vten53ksvce5me Jon Hicks @nprofile…rnt9 it’s a tricky one this, I read somewhere that the battery’s original capacity is actually much higher than advertised (so more than 100%) so 81% is more like 72%! npub1hcjuyjtn9d28gdwhhza9hk5mv32arjkcnexa0k57sg63vten53ksvce5me Jon Hicks It was a brief scene, observed while driving, so I couldn’t get a photo - I drew it afterwards instead. npub1hcjuyjtn9d28gdwhhza9hk5mv32arjkcnexa0k57sg63vten53ksvce5me Jon Hicks @nprofile…y2ut @nprofile…pn60 I remember it as being Elsa’s! npub1hcjuyjtn9d28gdwhhza9hk5mv32arjkcnexa0k57sg63vten53ksvce5me Jon Hicks @nprofile…y2ut 20 YEARSOMFG npub1hcjuyjtn9d28gdwhhza9hk5mv32arjkcnexa0k57sg63vten53ksvce5me Jon Hicks I saw this guy at an art gallery in Yorkshire yesterday, and was struck by how he'd branded himself around 'black and pointy' - nose, shoes and jacket collar in particular. His image stuck in my head, so felt compelled to draw him. npub1hcjuyjtn9d28gdwhhza9hk5mv32arjkcnexa0k57sg63vten53ksvce5me Jon Hicks The Shoveler count at Rushy Common & the Tar Lakes this today was nearly a hundred. They're taking over! npub1hcjuyjtn9d28gdwhhza9hk5mv32arjkcnexa0k57sg63vten53ksvce5me Jon Hicks My little music podcast, Troika, is 10 years old today. While the episode frequency has been irregular, I'm glad to still be chugging along with it. npub1hcjuyjtn9d28gdwhhza9hk5mv32arjkcnexa0k57sg63vten53ksvce5me Jon Hicks The start of the process is blank npub1hcjuyjtn9d28gdwhhza9hk5mv32arjkcnexa0k57sg63vten53ksvce5me Jon Hicks What was the poltergeist’s message? npub1hcjuyjtn9d28gdwhhza9hk5mv32arjkcnexa0k57sg63vten53ksvce5me Jon Hicks Watched The Cure's livestream from the Troxy over the weekend - 3 hours, free, with no ads! v=_aWDlaxvEZo whole of the new album (Songs of a Lost World) and then go on to play another 'normal' gig after that, amazing! npub1hcjuyjtn9d28gdwhhza9hk5mv32arjkcnexa0k57sg63vten53ksvce5me Jon Hicks I don’t like WordPress, but some of my clients require it because it has the most supported ecosystem. If someone hasn’t written a plugin, it’s easy to find a dev for it. npub1hcjuyjtn9d28gdwhhza9hk5mv32arjkcnexa0k57sg63vten53ksvce5me Jon Hicks No! Mew are splitting up - just as I was thinking they were due another album 😢 npub1hcjuyjtn9d28gdwhhza9hk5mv32arjkcnexa0k57sg63vten53ksvce5me Jon Hicks @npub19lt…qfjk Rock n’ Roll! we have a Joseph Joseph one that attaches to the inside of a cupboard door. Good quality and rock solid npub1hcjuyjtn9d28gdwhhza9hk5mv32arjkcnexa0k57sg63vten53ksvce5me Jon Hicks The whole AI in Figma debacle has left a really bad taste in my mouth. I've loved using Figma as a design tool all these years - there are so many little interactions that make it low friction and delightful to use. However, like with Adobe's push to generative AI, it no longer feels like it's aimed at me - it only wants to enable me to work so that it can plagiarise it and regurgitate out again for others who can't be bothered. The fact that it's opt-out rather than in shows their priorities. npub1hcjuyjtn9d28gdwhhza9hk5mv32arjkcnexa0k57sg63vten53ksvce5me Jon Hicks Nice to see tools using “No AI” as a positive marketing feature: npub1hcjuyjtn9d28gdwhhza9hk5mv32arjkcnexa0k57sg63vten53ksvce5me Jon Hicks Aside from all the other problems with it, this just isn't a thing I’d ever want to wear. npub1hcjuyjtn9d28gdwhhza9hk5mv32arjkcnexa0k57sg63vten53ksvce5me Jon Hicks I've added @npub1nd8…2zkd's fediverse-friendly ShareOpenly to the Hicks.design Journal, and blogged a bit about the icon: npub1hcjuyjtn9d28gdwhhza9hk5mv32arjkcnexa0k57sg63vten53ksvce5me Jon Hicks @npub19lt…qfjk 82p for some veg in the co-op the other day. Was ready for the cashier to tell me it had to be a £1 minimum, but they didn't bat an eyelid. npub1hcjuyjtn9d28gdwhhza9hk5mv32arjkcnexa0k57sg63vten53ksvce5me Jon Hicks I've decided to work my way through the Apple Music top 100 albums. Some I know, some I don’t, some I hate but will revisit. Will be interesting! I like that it was emphasised that this isn’t algorithms, and was decided by humans. npub1hcjuyjtn9d28gdwhhza9hk5mv32arjkcnexa0k57sg63vten53ksvce5me Jon Hicks 💪 npub1hcjuyjtn9d28gdwhhza9hk5mv32arjkcnexa0k57sg63vten53ksvce5me Jon Hicks When three friends are listening to the same thing, I guess I should listen as well! npub1hcjuyjtn9d28gdwhhza9hk5mv32arjkcnexa0k57sg63vten53ksvce5me Jon Hicks Well, it appears our ‘big car’ is fucked, and even if I want to spend the £3-4k I'm being quoted to fix it, I can't find anyone to do the work for months (timing chains = big job). npub1hcjuyjtn9d28gdwhhza9hk5mv32arjkcnexa0k57sg63vten53ksvce5me Jon Hicks @npub19lt…qfjk totally - it’s an icon basic that you don’t put borders around icons as it makes the silhouette the same for each one. It’s a problem on iOS and in recent years it’s become one on MacOS too. npub1hcjuyjtn9d28gdwhhza9hk5mv32arjkcnexa0k57sg63vten53ksvce5me Jon Hicks Canva acquires Serif’s Affinity Suite, and I can’t help feeling doom about this. npub1hcjuyjtn9d28gdwhhza9hk5mv32arjkcnexa0k57sg63vten53ksvce5me Jon Hicks ‘The Mortimiser' is something I’ve been chipping away at for a few months now. npub1hcjuyjtn9d28gdwhhza9hk5mv32arjkcnexa0k57sg63vten53ksvce5me Jon Hicks @npub19lt…qfjk I love how your toots try to pre-empt “those” replies 👍 npub1hcjuyjtn9d28gdwhhza9hk5mv32arjkcnexa0k57sg63vten53ksvce5me Jon Hicks I tried out various options for scrobbling analog music listening to last.fm. Have a gander if that’s your thing! npub1hcjuyjtn9d28gdwhhza9hk5mv32arjkcnexa0k57sg63vten53ksvce5me Jon Hicks I wish Apple would spend their time making iCloud Photos sync, no matter what your battery level is (especially when it’s at 95%!), or fixing those weird Apple Music bugs. npub1hcjuyjtn9d28gdwhhza9hk5mv32arjkcnexa0k57sg63vten53ksvce5me Jon Hicks Wondering whether I have the energy to fight against the eternal “all links should open in a new tab”. npub1hcjuyjtn9d28gdwhhza9hk5mv32arjkcnexa0k57sg63vten53ksvce5me Jon Hicks Sainsburys HO HO HOT ONE npub1hcjuyjtn9d28gdwhhza9hk5mv32arjkcnexa0k57sg63vten53ksvce5me Jon Hicks @npub19lt…qfjk I love this! If I had the energy I would love to re-implement the relevant site designs to my older blog articles. npub1hcjuyjtn9d28gdwhhza9hk5mv32arjkcnexa0k57sg63vten53ksvce5me Jon Hicks I need to convert a folder of 600 SVG RGB icons into CMYK (C0,M0,Y0,K100). npub1hcjuyjtn9d28gdwhhza9hk5mv32arjkcnexa0k57sg63vten53ksvce5me Jon Hicks I’ve now been on Mastodon properly for a year. While I miss the centralised place where friends, musicians, comedians and others all met in one place, I feel at home here. No algorithms, ads or restrictions on what app I use for it. No intrusions of ‘suggested posts’ in my timeline. npub1hcjuyjtn9d28gdwhhza9hk5mv32arjkcnexa0k57sg63vten53ksvce5me Jon Hicks There was once a time that when I went birding, I would take a pair of binoculars and maybe a packet of Quavers. npub1hcjuyjtn9d28gdwhhza9hk5mv32arjkcnexa0k57sg63vten53ksvce5me Jon Hicks 👋 Hi folks, I've been rather busy so far this year*, but I'll start having capacity again from late September. If you fancy working together, let's talk!** npub1hcjuyjtn9d28gdwhhza9hk5mv32arjkcnexa0k57sg63vten53ksvce5me Jon Hicks With Google Domains shutting down, I was looking into transferring to Wordpress Domains, but they “don't support transfers of premium domains” which sadly hicks.design is. Other domains are hosted with names.co.uk, but maybe I should at other options? Any recommendations? npub1hcjuyjtn9d28gdwhhza9hk5mv32arjkcnexa0k57sg63vten53ksvce5me Jon Hicks A quick two penneth (putting the privacy elephant in the room aside for a moment): npub1hcjuyjtn9d28gdwhhza9hk5mv32arjkcnexa0k57sg63vten53ksvce5me Jon Hicks @npub19kv…m4nu oh nicely done! 👌👏 npub1hcjuyjtn9d28gdwhhza9hk5mv32arjkcnexa0k57sg63vten53ksvce5me Jon Hicks Bit by bit, everything gets a bit more shit npub1hcjuyjtn9d28gdwhhza9hk5mv32arjkcnexa0k57sg63vten53ksvce5me Jon Hicks @npub19lt…qfjk @npub1mrc…f9xw DEAL 🤝 npub1hcjuyjtn9d28gdwhhza9hk5mv32arjkcnexa0k57sg63vten53ksvce5me Jon Hicks @npub1xzm…eykm @npub19lt…qfjk Thats what I was thinking - it keeps the text in the right order too
