That's the tough question. We've got 20 centuries of sunk costs into this religion. People need some kind of a hopeful narrative/ethical framework - that's what it supplies plus a lot of other emotional hooks. Brutal nature and indifferent science while factual are not comforting stories to tell the children....

3) The Medianites: God says - spare only the virgin girls. Um... ohhhkay God - any particular intentions there?
4) Jericho: (Joshua 6) Kill everyone except Rahab and her family.
5) Ai (Joshua 8): God says 'kill 'em all'
Why are we still respecting/listening to this 'God'?

While we're at it. Let's itemize the number of times that 'God' commands his followers to genocide some ppl...
1) The Amalekites (1 Samual 15). God tells them that not one of these people should be left alive.
2) The Canaanites: (Deuteronomy and Joshua) Among those people: the Hitites, Amorites, Canaanites and Jebusites. God command:s 'leave alive nothing that breathes'.

How long till they start genociding the next inconvenient group of people?

"Any system of thought that subordinates living people to a hypothetical future has already committed the foundational moral error. Once you accept that logic, there is no limiting principle. Any atrocity becomes justifiable. Any amount of present suffering can be rationalized as a necessary input to the glorious output."

My experience with baptists is that they are among the hardcore ones, along with Pentecostals, and also Lutherans, in my neighborhood at the time, that's where the freaky evangelicals dwelt.

I think there is definitely a big difference between romantic love and transcendent spiritual love. That's the love I'm referring to (the latter one).
I don't think capitalism/markets and love go together at all. Like, if you saw someone get injured and ran to help, you wouldn't ask them for a payment up front before you help them, etc.

I haven't been to a church in decades so I'm incredulous over their transition to radicalizing people into fascism. I grew up on liberal leftie Jesus, not this new Hitler version they're promoting now. Though I can see elements of the monotheism to fascism pipeline were in there.. now weaponized.

I'm definitely aligned with love as the most powerful force, it's the intolerance/paranoia and condemnation/othering of outsiders (non-believers) that I find to be the biggest problem with them.

The only other options people hear about are 'join a club.' Interesting clubs aren't that easy to find. Hanging out at the local pub has obvious downsides, though I guess it sorta works in some countries.
We need more ways for people to casually meet others that aren't trying to manipulate you or program you with religious doctrine...

I see this as quite a problem in the US. The default place a lonely person has to go is usually a church - where you can expect a modicum, possibly even a seeming profusion, of welcome. This is their hook. They provide automatic acceptance - of sorts.
This is also how the right wing fascist regime convinced people to let Trump take over the country - propaganda through the churches.

I also know smart capable people who acknowledge that christianity is mostly b.s., but they still go to church, because that's what they have always done, it's what all their friends do. Their whole social life is built around it.
They cling to it because they can't bear to think of life without it. It's the 'cornerstone', literally. They even refer to it that way in some churches.

2026-05-08 00:09:49 GMT

- reply

This is why people cling to it.
It's the most fundamental jenga block of our culture - for 20 centuries now.
Take that away and find out about all the problems it was patching for people this whole time.
No one wants to look at it. I'll keep my lucky rabbit foot, thank you very much.
We need that comforting narrative too, for meaning in life. Take that narrative away and it's just brutal nature and lots of ways for nihilism to manifest.

The rest of us dumb ugly losers need *something* to give us a bit of hope.
Religion is like this little imaginary lucky rabbit foot that you carry around in your pocket and gives you some confidence to carry on and believe something better is possible in a way that you could not justify through the usual material means.
