What does my favourite shooter of all time open at? Oh, yeah, just a guy getting executed by "violent militant thugs", justifying a "Special Military Operation" of the US military, killing brown people for being bad and having things US wants.

And before you try to claim that it's different, like, no? How is it different. Development of Modern Warfare began roughly around 2005, after they got CoD2 out of the gate, the game came out in 2007.
US had *just* had their routinely scheduled invasion of Iraq for bogus reasons in 2003.

So apparently Russians made some propaganda video game about "Heroes of Gostomel" or whatever and the collective west collectively lost their shit about it, people are brigading the report function on steam to report "Russian imperialist propaganda", and while all of that is good and cool and we should band together to protect Ukraine and whatever, it makes one wonder why the same kind of criticism and ire is never directed at, say, Call of Duty or Battlefield.

I have vague memories of some online games asking you to log in again if you change your computer configuration (i.e. swap / install RAM, change GPU, etc), but I can't find any actual evidence of that happening.
Anyone remember this?

We can talk about being empathetic, but empathy can't do you much good if the people in question repeatedly decide to stick their necks into a guillotine despite being told in very plain words that the guillotine will cut their heads off.

The thing with AI Psychosis is that I, at this point, in big 2026, fully believe people who got affected by it and tragically suffered 100% deserve it.
You were told not to use the devil machine as a substitute for an actual psychiatrist or partner or friend, you were told it's going to fuck you up, you were given examples of it driving people to kill themselves, and you still used it? Yeah, no, that's kind of on you.

The key difference between Fedi and Bluesky, well, one of the key differences that I can observe, is that right now, there's a dude who scraped 3 billion and then some users of the site and mapped them onto identifiable categories of gender, politics, topics, etc, and on fedi, this kind of clown would have been hounded off the platform for scraping data.

That's exactly my take all along, lole.
Punisher is, at least originally, someone who goes on killing "criminals" because he believes them to be criminals and thus deserving of being shot. It's the whole reason both Police and ICE love the character so much. He represents lack of accountability and complete insusceptibility to any kind of due process, judicial or communal, doesn't matter.

Idk what you are on about, my point is that Punisher is functionally identical to ICE. They shot a guy 'cause they didn't like him and decided he has to die, he shoots guys who he doesn't like and decides they have to die, there's functionally zero difference between the way they operate.

2026-01-27 07:11:07 GMT

There's something really sinister about Pirate Software telling people that his Linked In is a definitive proof of his career record.

Except where Mass Effect 2 had bespoke character writing and design, Outlaws has nothing, because every resource that could have been spent on crafting good narrative missions that flesh out the characters and building character interactions went into creating one of the emptiest, dullest and disinterested open worlds to date.

2025-07-25 09:46:59 GMT

Hearing Ubisoft blame the current state of Star Wars for the failure of Outlaws feels really funny considering what Outlaws actually is, which is Ubisoft's attempt at making Mass Effect 2 without actually understanding what made ME2 so good.
Outlaws here that has an illusive, rich man who sets you up with a ship, a companion on his payroll and a list of specialists you have to recruit across the galaxy in order to complete a very big and important heist that's almost a suicide mission.

2025-06-13 20:23:20 GMT

I really like how playful Isekai Ojisan is with it's point of view.
I'm on the episode where Ojisan wakes up with two babes in his bed and typically he'd be the viewer insert character, the power fantasy. But not in this show. His cousin and cousin's friend are the actual viewer inserts. The scenes are the same stupid isekai harem shit, but this shift in point of view really makes it... actually funny.

Roko's basilisk's core idea of "Computer that's going to drastically improve out lives is going to punish us for not working towards building it" is absurd no matter which way you can cut it. It's like looking at AM from I Have No Mouth and building a version of it where "perpetual torture" is a desired feature and not a byproduct of the AI going insane.

What's sending me the fuck off about episode 7 of GitS SAC is that binoculars Motoko's using are branded as "Mamiya".
What an optimistic future that was.
I own one of (but not THE) last models of camera Mamiya would produce. The company never made it into the 2020's that the show speculates it would have.

This, of course, will not shut TF2 community up, but you know, Valve has to try.

2025-02-20 06:40:03 GMT

The thing you understand about TF2 getting it's source released in new SDK update is that Valve aren't doing it out of the goodness of their hearts or as a token of good will towards community.
They are sick to the stomach of their community clinging to an old game Valve clearly communicated it has no interest in maintaining, constantly whining and demanding action.
This is basically "Fuck off and do it yourselves, then, we ain't lifting a finger for this old scrap".

And while it doesn't sound so bad because it means enemy can't see shit from orbit as well, it also means that you and your allies can't see shit from orbit either. Nobody can do anything. You have eliminated a strategical advantage you had, eliminated the possibility to re-establish it (because there's too much junk now covering our orbit to even consider launching something out there), trapping us forever on earth and blocking any interaction with outer space for millennia to come.

2025-02-19 21:22:45 GMT

- reply

By that point in time, yeah, you have disabled potentially dangerous and disadvantageous orbital weaponry your adversary has deployed, but at the same time you have denied your enemy, and what's most importantly, yourself, a huge and indispensable advantage of a myriad of spy, communications and relay satellites that were also orbiting the Earth.
You heard that right. You have disabled a potential doomsday weapon but in doing so rendered yourself 100% myopic. Nobody can see shit.

2025-02-19 21:20:46 GMT

- reply

We're not going to name names here to avoid a bias, but let's say country Alpha has an orbital weapons platform deployed and country Gamma decides to ram their satellite into it to shut it down.
What happens next is that derbies generated, with high likelihood, fly all over and start damaging and destroying all other orbital apparatus, this time without discerning who's friend and who's foe, triggering a cascading, total orbital shutdown.

2025-02-19 21:18:47 GMT

That part being: There's too much functioning and important shit we have floating up there than we'd like to admit and all of that shit is potentially indispensable in military applications.

2025-02-19 21:17:58 GMT

Watching this video on orbital weapon platforms from CoD Ghosts and the guy mentions how such a weapons platform would be ridiculously easy to neutralize without launching a manned / unmanned space mission by simply colliding a satellite into it or launching a missile from high altitude, and while that's all fine and dandy and is actually grounded in reality, I feel like this kind of countermeasure ignores one of the sadder parts of humans exploiting the orbit.

I'm always puzzled how shocked people are when they learn that until recently, age of consent in Japan was 13 years old
I'm no expert on Japanese law but I did live with the assumption for years that federal law and prefecture law in Japan allowed to differ and that most (if not all) prefectures already had that age bumped up to 16 and introduced a bunch of supplementary laws and the case of country law being updated is just a case of legislature cleanup to catch up with actual reality of Japan

2024-05-17 05:24:13 GMT

I love US politics because not voting for Biden is 100% a vote for Trump (even if what you actually did is not vote at all or vote for a 3rd candidate, it's still technically voting for Trump), but you can't actually vote for a senile genocide supporter either, it's a fucked up Catch-22 and the only way out of it is to do things that will get you charged with either terrorism or sedition.
