@nprofile…l7em I see those posters too. I think it's mostly 'signaling' for the staff. I can't recall anyone abusing staff. I've seen angry, frustrated people, sure, but they are always saying, something like, "Look, I'm not mad at you - it's not you, I know that, but I'm really upset that this is going on..." Like that. Physically touching them? Never.
Not saying that it never happens, just that it must be very rare, because I'm a little old man and haven't seen it! :-)
Or, maybe it happens in big cities and I've only lived in a couple very briefly.
But then why extend it to small towns like mine?

So many security guards these days! What changed?
All 3 supermarkets in town have security guards. The government agent's office has a security guard. Our new hospital employs more security guards than we have RCM Police for our whole town! I don't see more violence, just more fear perhaps.

Nearly all types of crime are down. Across Canada crime is down everywhere, except the North West Territories - what's going on there? There are some provinces +/- 1% or so, which seems ignore-able.
My province of British Columbia (BC) is down a whopping 11% - is that because we're super good or because we were really bad and just getting up to being decent? I have no idea. I need to look at the methodology they use to create the index numbers.
Anyhow, only two crimes are up: sex crimes against children (+6%) and shoplifting (+14%). Since child porno is down 15%, I'm guessing the crimes are from increased reporting?
Anyhow, the shoplifting number might explain the security guards in the grocery stores. Hard to believe it's worth paying a guy ~$30/hr to simply stand there for the most part, but maybe 'shrinkage' is that high? I'd love to see numbers.
I could ask the guy who used to own the Canadian Tire here until last year - he was always complaining in the coffee shop about shoplifters - seeing the same ones, even in the same day after the RCMP had arrested them already... Notably, Canadian Tire does not have security guards.
It must make sense money-wise or the stores wouldn't do it I suppose. Then again, large corporation are just as often to be as idiotic as large governments.
Now. The hospital - that makes no sense. For the past two years I worked in and around the hospital. The guards are wandering around aimlessly for the most part. I can see one being in A&E and maybe Main to deal with any violent types. You know where there are never any security guards? The psych ward!
I know what you're thinking :-) but I was there once a week to deal with their plants!
In any case, I think 35 security guards for the hospital is ridiculous. Ditto for the ones at the government office - waste of money. Heck, the government liquor store right beside it has no security guards.
And don't even start me on airport security - it's a show. For a few years I had security pass and an AVOP, so I could drive air side out to our cargo charter (narcotics and banks). It's a joke. The only people to suffer are the paying passengers. And, sure, that was only YXT (Terrace, BC) - small town, but I have a friend who was an electrician at YVR (Vancouver International) and he told me the situation was just as leaky there too.
There's like a climate of fear driven by the mass media and things like fb and twit.
I think it was 5-6 years ago that I was sent to Kitimat every day for a week or so. I was installing alarms and cameras with recording in homes. After the first one or two, I realized that all the houses were management at Rio Tinto Alcan. There was a strike looming and they were all afraid of their employees! Crazy. Really.
OK, to lighten things up.
The local Loblaw warehouse style grocery store used to have a woman standing at the exit checking receipts. I found it kind of insulting and I never saw her ever call anyone out for shoplifting.
Anyhow, one day buddy's wife dispatched us to buy a box of over-ripe bananas for cheap, so she could make muffins out of them. We came back to the house with her bananas still giggling.
I got to the exit ahead of my friend and 'assumed the position' on the wall next to the woman checking receipts. Then my idiot friend did the same thing :-)
We were both nearly 40 at the time, just hadn't quite grown up. Oh, she was so mad :-) I never liked her much anyhow, even though she was drop dead good looking from Haiti or Jamaica - I forget.
I guess we were a bit of a spectacle, because not long after there was no one at the door doing that useless task.
When buddy's wife found out why we were laughing she freaked out. "Oh! You idiots! I can never show my face in that store again..." and so on. Bit of an over-reaction IMO.

I use both and other things to resist tracking and fingerprinting.
I'm an absolute nobody. I'm poor and I never buy from an ad anyhow. I just fight back to be obstinate :-)

I'm currently wearing a quite puffy vest. It's puffy, because it's very light weight and being puffed up by two muffin fans via a normal USB battery pack.
I've had it on low for 5.5 hours now - it's a test :-)
It's only 21ºC in this room, but given that 23ºC is my 'cut off' for 'I will not work outside', it's fine! :-)
Well, I do work outside, but I hate it after 23º is all.
What happened was buddy was in Japan last summer and saw that most outdoor Japanese workers wore these vests and he was kind enough to bring me back one as a gift. I only had to add the battery pack - which I already had several of.
Conversely, I already owned the opposite of this vest: An insulated vest that took a batter to warm heating elements embedded in the vest :-)
Now, this is personal heating and cooling vs space/HVAC heating and cooling, so it must be cheaper?

Later: I was outside in 27º and I cranked it up to high speed. It was making a dint, but not as great as low speed indoors.
The thing is, that outdoors, one is also fighting the radiant heat hitting you and a puffy vest jacket is no defense against that.

Here's an interesting thing I observed. Do you remember me selling Christmass trees in a large parking lot at Canadian Tire for a few years?
That end of the parking lot has a bit of a slope and in certain conditions it's glassy with ice. I have to salt and sand around the trees, to protect the customers, but that end of the parking lot, often goes neglected for a day or two, before a sand truck comes and fixes it.
I often saw cars and trucks coming in just drifting and doing doughnuts and whatever.

Howto Backup Mastodon
Middle-click the gear icon in the upper left of your screen, which will pop a new tab, so you won't lose your place.
Left click on 'Import and Export' in the menu column on the left. 'Data Export' is already highlighted for you.
To the right of where it reads 'Follows' in the resulting table, click on the link named 'CSV' and let it download to your default download folder.
I have a cronjob that tells me to do this.
Optionally, you may also download your Lists, Blocks, Mutes, Domain blocks or Bookmarks, otherwise you are done already. Close the tab happy in the knowledge that you are backed up! :-)
It's also possible to download your entire archive, including media using the button 'Request Your Archive' at the bottom of the screen - it may take some hours to create the archive for you is all.
I also use the day to check local and remote backups as well as rsync to an external usb drive.

Pedos and freaks gravitate toward where their victims are. Catholic priests, Protestant pastors, school teachers, sports coaches... compose all around the same shitty few percent. Without looking, I think it's in the low 2 to high 2%. Protestant and Catholic pastors were identical within 0.1%.
Catholics are numerous (1.4mm) and organized into easily sued entities for money. A lone pastor with 150 in his flock... not so much.
I don't deny they're there - they are everywhere in ~ the percentage I claimed above.
Now when their superiors attempt to hide or cover-up and just move the pedo priest/pastor/imam/whatever around, then that bishop or whatever should be criminally charged to the same extent as the criminal - and, of course, the victims should be taken care of the best possible and that, normally, costs money.
I think the money penalty is a good deterrent, yes, because then parishioners will become more vigilant, but it's very important to tag those higher up bishops or whatever as criminals and prosecute them as well.

Living in the city as you do, I can see how you may be divorced from the cycle of life and death.

They cost $250-300CAD. A friend of mine used to drive around after work with his cargo van collecting up the strays and the supermarkets would pay him $5 for each one he repatriated.
In my town the homeless snag them and push them about piled high with their bedding and belongings.
There are roving crews who go from town to town in the summer months refitting the things.

Some blame them for housing shortages. They pay two or three times the tuition and pump other dollars into our economy for homeostatic needs. Makes no sense to me.

After nesting season, just put tiny pigeon 'bollards' so the rain still runs off, but they can't get in. All I can think of that's cheap.

@nprofile…la7y I think police self-select themselves into a position of power over others, which, I believe, uniquely disqualifies them from ever holding it.
Moreover, sending such people into the forefront of a mental health crisis is precisely wrong.
For domestics and mental health situations, they should be only in the background and 'available if needed'.
Too many people in crisis have been abused and even shot to death by police for no reason.
We know of famous, egregious cases like that of Sammy Yetim https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Killing_of_Sammy_Yatim?useskin=vector video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bJRNsj5GQWQ , but I've read of many, many others over the years that didn't get much press at all.
Police are exactly the wrong tool for the job!
And why didn't they simply use blue lights as a first move? No action or adrenaline rush in that, I suppose.

@nprofile…l7em Police are *not* the appropriate attendants to many situations. Certainly, they should not be sent out alone to things like mental health crisis. ODs, other medical emergencies and domestics.

I've never run into such at all.
About 20 years or so ago, the logging kind of collapsed around here. Two sawmills went down and a pulpmill, plus some specialty mills. Our government had ideas for those put out of work...
The first time I needed to go to A&E *all* the nurses in there were loggers! :-) Well, former loggers. It was very weird! I mean, I knew that guy's a faller, that guy's a chokerman... All good guys though. Good career change: less chance of being killed. Top jobs for dying are fisher and logger (police are down around number 15 long after garbage truck).
Another thing is, on Friday mornings I go up to the psych ward to tend plants out on the roof and inside. One of the nurses is my son-inlaw's sister (dunno what that makes her to me) and one of the psychiatrists is a bud I know socially. The patients either don't talk to me or are very congenial. Seems like a good environment to me.
