I might have cause to visit the UK this November. Unsure what I'd do there. Just walk around I guess. Drink hot chocolate in aesthetically pleasing locations. It's on the way back from Ghana - a family trip being forced upon me.

My initial response was “sorry I don’t speak French.” After further upset about that I said “I’m American.” Then after lots of more gesturing I said “the hotel manager told us to park here.” Then he gave up and drove off. XD

Ok spinsters. Advice needed.
At 18 I set out to work for a prestigious orchestra. But I ended up getting hired at a nightclub which has taken me on a detour of nearly 15 years. Just a couple weeks ago I finally got offered a summer contract that would have me working with some decently high profile classical music productions. It’s all quite posh and could open a lot of doors.
Simultaneously, with the World Cup coming to North America, I’ve had it in my head the past few years that I need to be involved somehow. I figured, maybe I’ll get in as a parking attendant or something. But FIFA of all people seem to think I’m worth something so I’ve been told that very soon I’ll have an offer in my inbox to be involved in a pretty significant way.
The classical place gave me a deadline that passed on Friday. I accepted their offer because at the time I wasn’t 100% sure FIFA would want me. I only found that out on Saturday morning. I’ve never backed out of a contract before and I’m unsure if going on this soccer side quest is worth turning away from this thing I’ve been trying to accomplish for a long time.
The World Cup is definitely a once in a lifetime thing, but my foray into sports doesn’t need to be something that colossal. On the other hand, I know how the classical music world is. Even with that gig, I’m not sure it would matter to the notable orchestras of the world. Many times I’ve contemplated giving up on that side of things altogether. Realistically, I’d probably have a much brighter future in sports. But do I even want a future in sports or do I think simply being involved in this particular tournament would make a good story? Maybe by doing it, I’ll see a lot more possibilities beyond concert production. 10 years removed from college, it could be time to shake things up?

To their credit, they are the best at what they do. But they've also been absorbing so many other companies and that I do think they're scrambling a bit to make it all work. And one of those attempts was calling someone like me. They're not averse to innovation, but my work style has always been a bit wild west whereas their entire office is set up to reflect the formula they've created for getting big projects out the door... which I think is necessary for them because they do have huge projects. I'm just not sure if I'd fit in that kind of ecosystem despite the prestige that goes along with it.

I went to my fancy interview. It was a 4 hour long journey that involved talking to multiple people and taking tours of multiple buildings. The place kind of reminded me of a beehive. Totally open concept, every resource I could possibly think of within the context of event production was all there. Big money in every direction. It was very fascinating to witness. Despite having no uniform, almost everyone had some kind of company-branded merch/accessory on from sweatshirts, backpacks, coffee cups, or water bottles. I was told that once people work here, they tend to stay. And even if they leave, a decent chunk of them come back once they realize that nowhere else is like this.
I asked my friend there what they said about me once I left and apparently all she overheard was that they think I'm brilliant but they felt like I'd use this place perhaps as a stepping stone rather than a place to spend the rest of my life and that they place a lot of value in people seeing their company being the end all be all of life. This is not unlike what I've heard people say about places like Disney or Live Nation. It supports my hypothesis that these places prefer to pluck people right out of select college/graduate programs as interns then funnel them up through the system. At 32 years old with 14 years of experience as a freelancer, I did ask them why they were speaking to me because I don't fit the profile of their usual hires. They said they'd been working on changing their approach to new hires, seeing the value of bringing in people who are already professionals.
And as a professional, I'm not sure why the expectation would be that I walk into this facility and immediately decide that this place is my new religion or something. And honestly, that's why I've always been wary of getting a "real job." The industry big names don't want me because I'm not "company trained," but I'm really good at getting freelance work or temporary contracts because I can jump into unusual situations and make it work.
Still TBD if they'll extend an offer to me or not. But after a long phone conversation with my touring BFF who appparently runs into the same internal conflicts as me, we have decided that touring is simply addicting for anyone who is a roadie at heart. And walking away before you have to usually doesn't end well. We all had lists of people who ended up "relapsing" after getting a perfectly respectable job somewhere because it's just not the same.

I know there's not much to be done until I actually go in for the final interview (which I've been told is basically just a formality since this company has been after me for years) but here I am considering getting a real job. I'm even viewing a house on my way out there. One with the front porch I've always dreamed of having. Nice fireplace. The whole deal. It could be nice. I think I'd be able to do well. But I still can't fully picture myself in this type of situation.
I've been doing the touring thing for a decade. That's a decent chunk of time. I've accomplished a lot but there's also more I'd like to do, "more" being stuff that has been harder to come by because the world prioritizes incompetent men who are nonetheless professional ass kissers which I will never be. So quitting feels like losing to them which really burns me up inside.
I last tried working a full time real job when I was 24 because it was a fancy title at a half decent place and I knew my family would like it. I ended up rage quitting after 8 months cause it was so suffocating. But now I'm 32, this new place is very prestigious, there's lots of opportunity there for continued education which is great because I also dropped out of a fancy grad school where it felt more like I was there to teach people than learn anything myself (plus being surrounded by incompetent men who were nonetheless professional ass kissers).
Alas, in the end I suppose I just gotta wait for the interview. Vibe check the place. All that.

Watched this two episode thing about I guess the UK version of public vs. private schools. What shocked me is that at the public school they have refugee/immigrant kids enrolling every few weeks. I don't think that happens really in the US except maybe at the border with Mexico.
Whenever I consume British media a big running theme (similar to Korean media) is that class is a very big day to day issue. Maybe because both countries are so small everyone is basically on top of each other. Similar to the private school in this series, there is this kind of expectation for excellence so goofing off and getting bad grades was never seen as cool. Instead, being involved in many extracurriculars and having lots of friends was cool.
We did to this thing when I was in high school where a public school started a lacrosse program (a bit unusual for public schools in the city) so we had a scrimmage exchange with them where they'd come play at our school and they'd come play at theirs. The differences were.... a lot... to say the least. Probably because I was the only black student on the team, a bunch of the kids from the public school were asking about all the mansions they passed on the way to our campus. I had never thought of them as mansions before!
I've long since left the bubble of that world, but it's unfortunate that such an experience comes with an insane price tag.

Once again shooting my shot at getting a job in classical music despite me swearing up and down I was done expending time and energy trying to gain a foothold in this space outside of the quickly cooked up diversity initiatives that were popular a few years ago. Once again I know I'm probably among the most qualified person who is bothering to apply to this job in the first place but watch them give it to some 25 year old with 1 year of administrative experience but nonetheless played clarinet at some prestigious music school. What does playing clarinet at a fancy school have to do with putting together and executing world tours? Nothing. But they tend to stick to hiring their own at these types of places. And here I am applying anyway. 🙃

My parents have pointed out that I've now been out of college for a decade so it could be worth switching things up. But I still feel as if there's so much more for me to accomplish with what I'm currently doing. Hmm...

2025-11-05 16:10:03 GMT

Way back in the summer when I found out I'd be on tour for the next 7 months with a 72 year old production manager, it was my assumption that he wouldn't make it given the tough (even by my standards) schedule. I predicted he'd be gone by Thanksgiving but I wasn't too far off. He put in his notice on Monday and will be gone on the 17th. I have since brought on a production manager I know can do the job since he wasn't happy on his current tour and was eager to jump ship.
What annoys me is that even way back during rehearsals in August, this guy said he didn't know if he could finish the full tour. Well, if you already think that, why did you take the job? I'm sure other candidates wanted it more than you did. Meanwhile my boss who hired him I think was blinded by his resume and past experience with rock and roll bands (a past they share, nonetheless, this is not a rock and roll tour) and wasn't thinking realistically. Now, I didn't want to jump on the guy because of his age. Sure maybe some 72 year olds can tour like this. But I bet they're rare. And a mutual connection of ours thought this guy retired some number of years ago after being fired from a similar tour.
I've never had a production manager look me in the eye and say "I don't know how to solve the problem" EVER yet this guy did so on several different occasions. He makes no attempt to connect with the crew, no attempt to solve problems on site, can't even make it up and down the stairs half the time, and seems to lack the ability to assert himself in any and all social situations. Apparently his dad used to rag on him about this all the time growing up. Like most guys on the road this late in life, he's been divorced at least once. At least I only need to put up with two more weeks of this. I wish him all the best, but he's honestly sad to look at.

They did mention they recently promoted a bunch of project managers in their concerts department specifically. I asked my friend later what those people got promoted to, and she gave me a shortlist of admittedly dry sounding jobs. On one hand I bet the money must be good. On the other hand I'm only one person who already lives well within my means so money isn't always the biggest draw. It's more about wondering if I'll get bored. And there's little room for boredom while on tour.

2025-10-22 13:32:21 GMT

This company keeps reaching out to me time to time. To be fair, I do apply for jobs there from time to time as well. But whenever I do, I get rejected, then reached out to separately about the higher level role of Project Manager. I mainly suspect this is because I personally know a good handfull of people at this company and I guess HR likes to talk, so they hear my name and are like "that job is too low level, make her a project manager."
The thing is, if I look up the employment history of other people with this role and going off the employment history of the people I know who work there, project managers seem to come from two main backgrounds:
1. Fresh out of a handful of the same high profile undergrad/grad programs so... definitely smart but often with little to no real world experience.
2. Coming from 2-5 years of work at regional theaters or theme parks.
So no one is coming off of 10 years of tour. Or any years of touring, for that matter. This company wants to speak to me again and I'm thinking of asking where people like me typically end up in their structure, because it certainly doesn't seem to be project management. If I read reviews of what it's like to work there as well, a number of people say the work is great but they have a legion of these project managers who don't have much expertise.

Thank you for the resource! The tricky thing with these friends and others in my life who have eventually found themselves in unhappy home situations is that it has never been so cut and dry as "Bob is beating the shit out of me, what do I do?" But rather, I'm aware they have certain life goals, but upon meeting Bob, those goals magically change overnight. They insist that this change is one they have their whole hearts behind, but in reality, it's just Bob's interests and goals replacing their own interests and goals. And it just deteriorates from there. My one friend packed her bags one evening and left in a hurry, which was ultimately the best option for her, but it's not something I want to relive again. I really think she got lucky, seeing as the retaliation on his part was rather limited. They certainly didn't have guns stored all over the house. And they lived in Los Angeles, not some field in New Jersey.

No she’s an only child. So far I’ve mostly been in question asking mode around her as any direct criticism gets me running into a brick wall.
Historically I don’t get any details about her boyfriends because she knows I’ll probably jump to “he sucks, break up with him.”
They had a courthouse marriage last year as the guy was supposedly in a rush to get married for paperwork purposes for a government job he ended up not getting. Now I’m the maid of honor for her actual wedding next year so we are talking and meeting up more than in previous years. Maybe that’s why she voiced frustration about the DnD thing and I was hesitant to go straight in for the “stop putting up with that your husband is red flag central” feedback.

For the job stuff she insists she doesn’t care about her own job, she just wants to finish two years at her current one ideally for resume purposes. Before he proposed to her, she described her job as the best thing ever.
She’s definitely frustrated by the DnD which is new for her but didn’t take kindly to me saying the husband can make his own chicken. She then sites the guys she works with in the military who treat their wives terribly and how “if that happened to me I’d end it right away.” She sees no connection between those experiences and hers.

2025-08-18 03:25:48 GMT

Spent a lovely weekend with my lifelong friend, attending both an MCR and Linkin Park concert. But as usual, when getting filled in on the finer details of her life, I remain increasingly concerned about her husband. For all I write about the dangers of men, it was my super libfem older sister who asked me the obvious question today: "Does he even like her as a person?"
I don't think I'm being biased in saying my friend is fairly brilliant. She meandered a bit in her twenties at a job she did not like but after joining the military and getting specialized schooling seems to be a standout in whatever she does. Her husband is newly ex-military, flunked out of college twice, and each time we meet up (around 3 times a year) he has a new career endeavor. Each endeavor shares the following similarities:
1. They must move to somewhere that is both obscure and far away for him to take the job.
2. She must quit her own specialized military job and grad school to make the move.
3. It's something comparatively low level and lower paying than what she does, usually some kind of security guard.
Luckily so far everything has fallen through for him but on our recent meeting she came in with a complaint about her life which she usually doesn't have. The husband hosts a DnD group every couple weeks. She prepares and/or orders in food for everyone. The guests make a spectacular mess of the house. She takes it upon herself to clean it up. She hates this and also doesn't have the free time to keep participating in these long DnD sessions without assistance from other people.
In addition to that, she asked me how to make chicken. She has been a vegetarian her entire life so you can imagine my surprise. Apparently she bought a rotisserie chicken from the store for the husband but him spitting it out and making commentary on how it was dry apparently impacted her so much she is now fretting about how to cook chicken on her own for him... someone who historically doesn't even physically touch meat.
Did I mention they have guns stored all over the house?
I know my views on males at large are considered extreme by the general population. But if I loved someone, I wouldn't keep coming up with these scenarios that would require her putting her entire life on hold, having her clean up after my friends, or spitting out food she got me as a thoughtful gesture.

I should start charging women who want to engage with me about Star Wars for the purpose of being able to understand what their boyfriends are talking about. 🤣

I’m not sure of many other ways I can say “I’m not interested in men” outside of maybe showing up one day with a wife but idk even then I’m not sure if my folks would ever be convinced I wasn’t simply limiting myself with my behavior. 🙃

A rock and roll guy 10 years older than me trying to adjust to his current job producing theatrical tours. Figures.

Tea acquired. He’s the type to sit in a chair and expect everyone else to do everything for him, has Ben fired from at least two tours, and really should not be on the road at all.

The production manager I’m being paired with is 20 years older than my and has a history of old school rock and roll touring.
He’s not going to want to do anything I tell him to do will he?

I wonder if we domesticated squirrels we would then need to save the squirrels if it got too hot outside.

Just sat through an incredibly long ASPCA commercial.
What exactly did cats and dogs do before humans were around to cater to their every need?
I never see commercials asking for money to help the stray horses.

Recently with typical franchise stuff like Star Wars, Marvel, or DC, audiences will notice similarities between the evil faction and certain world leaders then get mad at the film for being political if they support those certain world leaders. And it’s like… if the galactic empire reminds you of your buddies, that’s not the fault of Star Wars. XD

Male: *watches a very basic film about good vs evil*
Male: I don’t see why they needed to get political.

Didn’t put gas in my car after work last night because it was late and all the places I passed looked a bit sketchy. Now it’s 5am and I’m leaving for work soon. I assume all the crime and drinking is over by now? Hopefully cause my tank is running on fumes!

Professor X mentioned this in a talk show interview once. Unfortunately the cuisine up there is never very aesthetically pleasing.

Fascinating! So far this documentary conjures the same confusion as when I was watching Peaky Blinders. Everyone is beefing with each other over some sort of tribal difference but all I see are white dudes who like to blow things up.

The internet gods must be spying on me because this just popped up in my recs. 5 minutes in and dude says this protestant/catholic beef has been going on over there for 800 years??? First off, I find it hard to believe people still really care about which version of jesus they stan. And at first they just showed a bunch of young white dudes who, given their age, are likely to be drawn to gang mentality and setting things on fire. But then apparently whole families show up to this flag burning party. I also find it hard to believe that northern Irish people would be burning flags about Irish independence. Is it so bad that Ireland is its own country?
