Where is the line between following genre or medium conventions, and creating something trite?
I rarely follow conventions, at least not on purpose, so couldn't tell you. I have rolled my eyes at certain overused plotlines I've encountered in some programs I've watched. It might be the case that when the main concern is "mass appeal" a creator is more likely to stray into trite trying not to alienate anyone.

Well, I was extremely physically active most of my adult life, including having physically intense jobs, weight lifting, kickboxing, hiking on weekends, & walking most everywhere reasonably possible. I didn't write at all during most of that time. Now I'm retired, garden, & walk the dog a little & have produced a dozen books. 🤷

I do know the eye colors of my husband and my children. I'm less sure about all my grandchildren and rarely recall anyone else's. I usually only mention my characters' eye colors when it's necessary to the plot. The mages' eye colors often shift when using their powers, for example.

It was meant to clarify my feelings on the matter. I am not against religion per se. Just because I don't believe doesn't mean I don't support the right to belief. I mean, who am I to say if that stuff is real or not? It's more what actions they take because of that belief that I might take issue with.

Yes! The latter. Which is why I found this creepy. It happened immediately. My son put me on his 365 account after a hard drive issue made me lose all my work. This was years ago and, these days, I don't trust it, so routinely upload anything I don't want to lose to Proton Drive. My 2nd folder is still there & I got my sign made, so all is good, but ....

So here's a creepy thing: I downloaded photos of people killed by ICE into a new folder called "ice" in my pictures folder, saving each photo by their full name. I got to the 4th photo & the system couldn't find the folder to save it in. I looked--new folder is gone. Previous downloaded photos are listed as "removed" in a menu. 🧐 Fuck it, I did it all again, edited each photo & renamed with "cropped" after each name. The new folder is still there as of now. But ... ???

#Today Happy Spring Everyone! We are evidently skipping it altogether down here in the SoCal desert & are in the middle of our first heat wave of the year. I expect many flowers to be popping over the next couple of weeks. Is there a country other than your own that influences your creativity?
As a kid, I romanticized UK, largely because of Tolkien (my 1st trip there was to place flowers on his grave.) After a few visits, plus marrying a Brit, I sadly came to view it as another country with it's own issues, yet I still consider it beautiful & treasure my memories. None of my stories are set there. My Dragon Age books are more an echo of classic fantasies influenced by that country.

Poor thing. Glad they could help her feel better. These animals just tear out our hearts, yet bring us such joy too. We've got a super elderly dog and are just enjoying our remaining time with her. She still acts like a happy puppy sometimes, although in short bursts.

Maggie uses her sweet Texas lady persona as armor. It puts people off their guard. She favors dressing up a bit, something businesslike to project authority--clothing is also armor to her. Her appearance varies throughout the story, from young to old to young again, but her gaze, speech, & manner show her to be an elder.

Yeah. I worked as a market researcher. 😁 It did leave me with a good understanding of the importance of "brand," which is something I am consistent with, but I find it distasteful to do too much promotion. Unfortunately, I tend to forget to do *periodic* promotion. Particularly when I am hip deep in a WIP. Writing is all I tend to want to do 😆

Not many have living parents & none of those are in touch. One of them does hear from Mom at one point, & does go to meet her, but that was a ploy to get him out of the house so he could be robbed. I wouldn't call it a Hallmark reunion. These families are all dysfunctional.
Unless you're talking about the Wood & Mother Ardonna. Trees would listen to that call & obey.

There was a long thread on this yesterday. Evidently, the AI crawlers are being permitted access to all Wiki's data for payment. Prior to this, their crawlers were going in anyway, so some people were arguing Wiki might as well be paid. They are also claiming the content won't be influenced, but I see an AI partnership starting which raises red flags for me. It's an old story about giving the unscrupulous an inch & they'll take a mile.

What's an animated movie you love?
My granddaughter was super into Moana when it first came out. I enjoyed watching that (over & over) with her when I visited one year. As a kid, I loved all the Christmas animations. Especially one you never see any more: Mr. Magoo's Christmas Carol. 😀
Otherwise, I am less into animation than I was when I was younger. There's a video series on Nebula called Tale Foundry I enjoy that covers literary topics.

Are you actively building your working vocabulary?
No. I'm nearing 70 and have retained a lot from decades of reading. Some of it I can't even use in my writing due to the modern penchant for "easy" texts, though I tend to throw less common words in here and there, as it doesn't hurt people to know them. Language is as dynamic as culture, so I continue to pick up new terms as they come into use.

How do you get to know your characters before you start writing?
I don't do any sort of character bios or things like that. I do have a character spreadsheet to keep track of everyone, but that's not filled out until after they appear in the story. They are mostly in my head, I might jot down a couple of notes if there's some key mannerism or quality I want them to display. I get to know them primarily while writing them.

What does the opening chapter of your story reveal about the world it’s set in?
The opening chapter of Season of the Bluebonnets reveals more about the world left behind. There are hints that this new world they've crash landed on is very different, but all they have is data from past scans, since the power went out & sensors died. And some extremely weird rumors. Now that they're here, they can't get out to see for themselves: something is holding all the doors shut.

How do you steer a reader’s emotional journey?
No idea. Never thought about it in these terms. Although I suppose you could logically refer to writing as "human emotion prompt engineering". 🤣 I just write the story in my head & people seem to react to it. My characters are having an emotional journey for sure, & I guess readers come along for the ride.

While editing, what most clearly signals a pacing issue?
If I find myself getting bored because the chapter seems to drag. This is usually too much dialogue or narrative passages which need to be revised, moved, or deleted. I seem to have more of a problem with too slow than too fast, although I occasionally will need to add something.

How long does it usually take you to decide if you like a book?
Ultimately, once I get to the end. I've been disappointed by endings. There're stages to this though. If the first few pages grab me, I'll buy the book. If it continues to hold my attention, I'll keep reading. I will stop if my attention wanes to the point I keep finding other things to do, or if something about it makes me loose immediate interest but, for most, I'll finish before judging.

They were extremely helpful once when I had an issue with Amazon. I wound up resolving things on my own, but they were quick to respond with advice. I read through their message boards at times. It's more about me just rarely engaging with most sites than anything wrong with them. I spend most of my time writing. The only community I regularly interact with is here. It's the only organization I'm a member of since they have no yearly earning requirement.

What’s your MC’s family like?
Jezmian of the Wellsprans--maker of dragons--is a big-hearted, larger than life hero-esque type. He enjoys drinking, brawling, and trysts: the type of man Maggie used to dismiss as a "yahoo." But there was so much more to him--a wide potential Maggie has drawn out. He captured her heart like no other. She couldn't refuse his request for her to become his consort & can't imagine her life without him.

The only reason AI has em-dashes is because they stole from a bunch of authors who used them. I don't get why this is hard for people to understand. Seems willful propaganda to me, to muddy the waters. Might as well say "real authors don't use commas because AI does." 🙄
