neither do I. that's one user getting banned from a quasi private space. what I'm concerned about is a fedi norm that supports harassment and fediblocks for opinions deemed somewhere on the conservative spectrum. for entire servers with a few users who post like that. sometimes for entire servers that federate with such servers.
and while this might have personal benefit, it leads to us staying small and bad places growing. at least everyone can connect over there.

yes but I don't think coops in the middle solve this either. they become more useful as they get bigger but that gives them more power and they can always eventually abuse that power. or maybe even just do something that only a quarter of the musicians hate. it can't sustain.
instead imo we need less work on competing systems, more work on protocols/APIs, apps and servers. and then a fuckton of advocacy for decentralized fiat.

I'm against algos generally, but especially ones we don't control. I don't think we can avoid them being manipulated. If people can't be bothered to make lists, they won't manage their algos either.
I recommend thinking of your feed as a river. Follow lots of people, hopefully of varied views, and that you'll probably see the best posts cause lots of people you follow will boost it.
But we could also have apps that also notify you every time certain people you choose post or boost.

what we fail to understand here is that because we lack algos...unwanted replies, even made in good faith, are a much bigger problem than horrible posts where nobody is tagged. and this problem should be approached at the server level, not just expecting users to block the annoying users themselves. we must block servers that don't police their annoying users, even when they seem to be the nicest people. many of these users think they are doing good work, when they are the problem.

I know people who work in the non profit #ChildCare programs in Illinois and they take fraud seriously. I have a hard time believing they don't do the same in #Minnesota.
And one thing I learned from #NoAgenda is how easy it is to selectively edit from a ton of man on the street interviews, investigations or clips to show the worst results and make it seem like that was a fair representation etc. This lesson is rarely applied equally. #NickShirley #LibsOfTikTok

Media that intends to grow their audience by triggering people leads to misinformation because the creator has to put themselves in that angry brain space to do it well, which even if they then wanted to be honest and fair about the issue, prevents them from formulating ideas from other perspectives. We get locked into thinking like a prosecutor instead of a judge.

and if Dems had supported more progressive candidates, we'd have all that and universal health care and good climate policy and properly sized and regulated corporations and democracy in Palestine.
most politicians will do the bare minimum to get elected while serving the interests of the corporate donors who help them win their primary. the Dems will go as far right as we let them.

Playing the game was smearing Trump even though you knew the reasoning was bullshit. Glenn has an ego and can be mean but he's also honest when that's not the popular thing to do.

the episode then gets much worse (while making some good points, ugh).
the hosts here are folks who don't see a distinction between establish Dems and those who are further left on economics and the security state, but also more liberal in that they want an open and honest conversation, not just for their party or ideology to win.
there is absolutely an element of playing to a receptive audience that Matt is doing today. it sucks but it's extremely common. but this is mostly a hit piece imo.

I agree #MattTaibbi is no saint and has changed a bit, but this episode is misleading re him and the Russia conspiracy. It wasn't about Russia fucking around in 2016 like all states do, but the claim that Trump was working with Putin to do whatever necessary (including break laws) to beat Hilary. And they used the claim to try to make it impossible for him to do anything in the first term. And saying that got you called names and dismissed. I can see how that broke Matt.
