neither do I. that's one user getting banned from a quasi private space. what I'm concerned about is a fedi norm that supports harassment and fediblocks for opinions deemed somewhere on the conservative spectrum. for entire servers with a few users who post like that. sometimes for entire servers that federate with such servers.
and while this might have personal benefit, it leads to us staying small and bad places growing. at least everyone can connect over there.

I don't believe that the majority of people here want a fedi where expressing shitty opinions or boosting stuff many don't like, means it's ok to be harassed or exiled.
or maybe the majority here does feel that way, but then we will never grow. which they are probably ok with, but it means the vast majority of people can't use social media or will be on platforms with algos where they get bombarded with horrible propaganda.

you should feel as bothered by someone saying that stuff on fedi as you do about all the horrible websites that exist. without algos and when nobody is tagged and it's posted on a server you're not on, it should be completely ignorable. we don't try to police the web in the way we do fedi, otherwise I'd be unable to browse nice sites cause I also browse bad sites (my server is blocked because of which other servers I federate with).

there should be one decentralized social media network with everyone on it, like the web. but also where pushing yourself into others feeds, like spam, isn't tolerated. ultimately, it can't be X or bluesky cause those both won't really be decentralized ever.
my brother is MAGA. I'm sure most of us have family that wouldn't be treated well here if they honestly expressed themselves and boosted stuff they liked, even if they weren't intentionally bothering anyone. that has to change.

Most people want to have private online conversations. Some also want to post publicly. I get wanting to be able to use the same account for both but trying to let everyone do so seems to be creating more problems than it solves. Lots of confusion and anger and tons of effort to build in more nuance and moderation capacity to the tools we already have and need to keep somewhat simple to encourage adoption.
Perhaps build on #matrix and #ActivityPub separately. Have users list both accounts.

so why define it that way? what gets posted on a server doesn't have to be oriented to that community. people usually aren't excluded from having accounts. in my experience, you can usually join if you're nice.
afaik it's usually just a feel good term to use and people can't think of another way to talk about it. people want to say they are making a place for this group or that, and don't consider how that can confuse or push away people who don't know where to join.

I don't get thinking of servers as a community, except to the degree something like the fans of a podcast start a server to talk to each other AND figure out the fedi. but communities are insular and that's the opposite of interoperability. and everybody will soon have friends off server that they feel like are part of their community.
a server shares mod policy. in order to avoid centralization, when no other sensible division makes sense, let's separate servers by locality.

obviously VLC is a great universal tool but I don't think internet radio can take off without a great focused UX and as close to a universal library as possible.
re UX, the best I've seen is SomaFM for Android but it is locked. who maintained that stream database? I wonder how #PocketCasts manages their podcast search.
The third essential piece might be live chat.
I'd also like to be able to fedi share the stream and individual tracks.

yes but I don't think coops in the middle solve this either. they become more useful as they get bigger but that gives them more power and they can always eventually abuse that power. or maybe even just do something that only a quarter of the musicians hate. it can't sustain.
instead imo we need less work on competing systems, more work on protocols/APIs, apps and servers. and then a fuckton of advocacy for decentralized fiat.

my concern is not just about having options but how everybody using the same thing has societal effects.
people don't have to use Amazon but if that's good enough, they will. and society gets impacted.
so I see bluesky going in that direction and I can't see that happening based on AP. so I argue for helping people understand the difference and focusing on the awesome things AP could enable that's less likely under AT.

many share your more closed vision of fedi. imo those places are also needed but this tech allows more than that. as long as we work to prevent the harassment that drives people to not participate, just like IRL, we can have work go worldwide viral among people who would vehemently disagree on lots of other issues. that's not possible if we screen for bigotry. people in different countries might agree on ending war but disagree on so much else. see MTG on Epstein.

again, I am not arguing that the fedi can solve bigotry. but that there's a larger vision that is really just an attempted improvement on what humans do. advance culture and civics through conversation and sharing the best info, ideas and art of others. social media, mostly through the boost, helps us do that faster. decentralization removes the dominant influence of big money in how that flows.
we didn't need to end bigotry first to make this work IRL. same here.

the web has always had hate sites. that's a problem but it's not a problem that makes the web not worth using. each new hate site that the hated does not see, does not impose any costs on the hated (even though we'd all prefer it didn't exist). just like haters talking hate to other people (as long as that never leads to anything that impacts the hated) sucks but we tolerate it as a society. all we can do is try to prevent the haters from spewing that hate directly at the hated.

we're stuck because we haven't seen much decentralization of the ATmosphere yet and bluesky isn't even sustainable yet. everybody has their theories on how this will go but that's all they are. and that really sucks because it means that people who might otherwise get behind AP, have good reason to wait. the entry of bluesky into the space has slowed everything down, even as they seem to have gotten lots more people on social media built on an open protocol. frustrating as hell.

this is fun but the better model is public servers based on locality while media properties like podcasters start instances just for their staff. like they have websites and/or email servers. ideally every podcast episode would be its own #ActivityPub item, not just have a post that links to it.

I'm against algos generally, but especially ones we don't control. I don't think we can avoid them being manipulated. If people can't be bothered to make lists, they won't manage their algos either.
I recommend thinking of your feed as a river. Follow lots of people, hopefully of varied views, and that you'll probably see the best posts cause lots of people you follow will boost it.
But we could also have apps that also notify you every time certain people you choose post or boost.

what we fail to understand here is that because we lack algos...unwanted replies, even made in good faith, are a much bigger problem than horrible posts where nobody is tagged. and this problem should be approached at the server level, not just expecting users to block the annoying users themselves. we must block servers that don't police their annoying users, even when they seem to be the nicest people. many of these users think they are doing good work, when they are the problem.

I am replying to your post because there's some of it that I agree with and it's getting attention. I post on here to try to argue for my views and hear from others. Reaching people who already agree with me does little good, but there's great potential in being read by those who are clearly open to outside the mainstream views. especially when there's clear evidence I can present that you're wrong in the areas we disagree, and that the bias towards groups that undergirds it is weak.

can you please explain to me what would happen if bluesky decided to suspend something like a #Venezuela govt account? how would they best be able to respond and quickly get back to ensuring that their posts reached all the people who were following them?
my view is that this ability to grow and protect the reach of important sources of journalism and governments is why decentralized social media matters. I don't get how AT plans to do this nearly as well as AP does.

they didn't foresee political parties (or then how gerrymandering would compound the problem). that's the disconnect. electeds today believe (mostly correctly) that if they stand up against their president or other high level officials that seem to be on their side, they will lose their seat in the next election. and so for self interest or wanting to do more long-term good for their constituents, they stand down.

Right now, corporate mass media (and social media platforms) are providing Americans a steady feed of info/opinion that will bias them towards accepting the attack on #Venezuela. You'll see opposition arguments but the overall tilt will support it. Cause it's good for their owners/advertisers and they've hired people who see the world that way. Some direct demands but it will mostly be natural.
This pipeline is what we can displace with decentralized media. The most important thing we can do.

Could the US take out the leaders of Mexico or Canada?
All that prevents this is that the public would have a hard time accepting it. It would be hard to make Americans think it was ok. The media couldn't be used to convince us it was justifiable.
Or said in another way, what allowed the US actions in #Venezuela is the propaganda. There's a system in place to effectively tell most of us what to think. Change that via decentralized social media and this shit ends.

This assumes an honest media and a public understanding driven by critical thinking. The US government is never forced to deal with such questions and the American people are kept sufficiently ignorant/nationalistic to accept the hypocrisy. Having a political duopoly where being antiwar is not a plank of either party helps.
