In case people are wondering why GitHub has been having some issues as of late - the GitHub COO recently shared that they're handling up to an order of magnitude more traffic than they were a year ago.
It's not like GitHub is just serving up pictures and text - things like the core git backend and actions are quite complex to host at scale. Idk, I guess I'm not surprised there are some stability issues when they're going from handling 1 billion commits/year to 14 billion commits/year.

I'm so tired of the phrases "terror organization", "terrorists", "terror regime", and so on.
ISTG so many stories by reputable outlets are like: "Our small bean country had no choice but to violate the Geneva conventions because the terror nation was so scary"
Bitch, you're the ones violating the Geneva conventions! In a just world you'd be charged and stand trial in front of a court the next day.

When people say: "billionaires shouldn't exist" that isn't a call to violence. "Being a billionaire" isn't some inherent property in the way that say, skin color is.
Wealth taxation is a perfectly acceptable way of eliminating all billionaires. That doesn't mean billionaires stop being people, they just stop being billionaires.

Semi-regularly reminder that we not only have the technology to almost entirely eradicate airborne diseases and pandemics, it's surprisingly cheap too!
HEPA-grade air filtration costs next to nothing to deploy, requires relatively little maintenance, and can scrub the air of almost all airborne disease. We've managed to rid our water and food supplies from diseases. There are no technical hurdles to do the same for the air we breathe too!

Slack, overhead, and spare capacity are not inefficiencies to be ground down, but integral to the stable functioning of systems. Because a system without buffers cannot absorb shocks.

2025-11-30 02:01:17 GMT

I didn't realize that Swiss trains apparently also adhere to the "schedule for 80% of capacity rule".
Apparently trains in Switzerland go around 80% of the top speed possible on the track. The 20% overhead is used to make up time in the case of delays.
The thinking is: stable and predictable operation is more important than going faster. Because the cost of passengers regularly missing layovers is much higher than the benefits of trains being 20% faster.

I think I'm finally coming around to understanding what librarians actually do, and why people I occasionally see people arguing for hiring librarians at companies.
It's actually really simple: any formally organized group of people produces and consumes a lot of information. The job of a librarian is to organize and maintain that information.

One of the few tech millionaires I can openly respect are the Heroku founders. They don't really seem to toot their own horn too much, but they're the main folks funding Ink and Switch: a non-profit software research lab which has been driving research on CRDTs, local-first software, and related research topics:

Headlines that sound like they're made up but aren't: Israel nearly hit Greta Thunberg with a drone strike in international waters.
Why? So Israel can block food, water, and other basic supplies from entering Gaza. Supplies have been blocked from entering the country for the past two months, and food will run out in about two weeks.
Thunberg was about to board a supply boat to deliver supplies. To prevent Palestinians from starving to death. But nah, fuck that - drone strike instead.

I've spent the last two weeks eating my way through southern Italy, and one of the places we went out for dinner to made tortellini filled with braised lamb and kimchi, served in a dashi broth made with bbq roasted daikon.
The combination of kimchi and pasta is superb. I made a red sauce with oven-roasted courgettes, forest mushrooms, garlic, and white wine. The kimchi worked so well in that!
Don't add too much - just enough that it melts into the sauce without standing out.

Does anyone have any good resources around automata and how to model systems with them?
I've seen the cellular automata demos, and they're fun! I've also used / written finite state machine implementations, and I tend to model a lot of things with them.
But I know that automata can go a lot further than that. For example, I know that the peep magic peephole optimizer is/was based on automata, and it's what made it efficient. I want to learn more about automata like that?

Yeah yeah, white supremacists are morally repulsive etc. But do we talk enough about how boring they are?
None of the white supremacists actually seem to appreciate the things that make life worth living. Art, music, food, friends. They’re always around hating on things rather than enjoying new things. All the while putting themselves forward as supposed arbiters of good taste.
What taste? What imagination? I don’t think it’s an accident they’re all so boring and bland either.

In today’s “terminology matters”:
❌ Return To Office policy: middle-management language that assumes “office” is a neutral position, we’re somehow “returning to”. This term has been carefully crafted by corporate strategists to sound as palatable as possible.
✅ Mandatory Commute policy: centers the outcome for workers - spending hours each day on an unpaid commute to and from the office just so we can be on video calls all day.
We don’t just have to accept hostile framing.

Regular reminder that effective, cheap, mass sterilization technology for just about every known and unknown airborne pathogen exists — we just choose not to deploy it.
HEPA-grade air filters are cheap, easy to install, effective, and severely underused. Unprecedented flu outbreak? SARS pandemic? N5H1? It can scrub the air of all of the above quickly, efficiently, and economically.

My favorite string type is probably `Cow<‘static, str>`, since it only allocates if it strictly needs to. And if you use `impl Into<Cow<‘static, str>>` as a bound, you can pass both string literals and allocated strings into functions without a problem.
My least favorite string type is probably `Cow<‘static, str>`. Because seeing something like `impl Into<Cow<‘static, str>>` in a function parameter is a *lot* to read, write, and understand. And it still misses a bunch of optimizations.

“But Yosh, how would we sandbox C++ code at scale?”
While not a perfect solution — Firefox’s RLBox toolkit (https://rlbox.dev/) provides the template for that. It compiles a C program to Wasm, puts it inside a Wasm sandbox, and provides the same API on the outside of the sandbox.
Now if the sandboxes library exhibits UB, it can no longer be used to exploit the rest of the program. Here’s a full writeup of how this works:
https://hacks.mozilla.org/2020/02/securing-firefox-with-webassembly/

2024-11-24 13:20:12 GMT

- reply

Don’t just take my word for it; the Chromium project makes this pretty clear with their “rule of 2”. Pick no more than two of:
- code which processes untrustworthy inputs
- code written in an unsafe language
- code which runs with no sandbox
The inputs and outputs to programs are typically fixed to the domain and cannot be changed. Meaning: if C++ code cannot be replaced with a memory-safe language, and cannot be rewritten to be memory-safe, the only remaining option is to sandbox it.

2024-11-24 12:55:30 GMT

Re: the C++ committee voting down the adoption of a memory-safe subset.
IMO the choice was not between “memory-safe C++ subset” and “C++ profiles”. It was between “memory-safe C++ subset” and “C++ code must always be isolated in a sandbox” — AKA “C++ goes to jail now”.

Absolutely nothing. Just because a company published docs online on how to access their API for free provides no guarantee they’ll keep granting you access to their API free of charge in the future.
Twitter once had a public API. So did Reddit*. Both wanted to make more money. Now they no longer do.

This reminds me of the early 2020’s meme on the nature of exponential growth. If the curve is exponential, it doesn’t matter where on the graph you look — it’s all exponential. Instead a lot of people only notice the last bit in the chart where the differences become impossible to ignore.
I feel like Doctorow did a good job explaining the lifecycle in his “enshittification” post. Bluesky seems locked in, even if right now it’s still early in the cycle and people can’t always tell.

Or maybe since Bluesky was originally founded by a shitty crypto person and just took on more debt from shitty crypto people it’ll be some new revolutionary conical-shaped money scheme.

Headline: “Wow, Bluesky managed to get $8 million in funding”
What you should be reading:
“Bluesky took on an additional $8 million in debt, which they will need to be pay back with interest one way or another”
How are they going to be doing that, you wonder? Well reader, certainly not just by selling domain names at a slight markup.

2024-10-18 21:39:08 GMT

Regular reminder that Bluesky is a VC-funded company which inevitably is headed for the same fate shared by all VC-funded companies. It must maintain hypergrowth until it either:
- folds
- sells
- IPOs
Maybe tuning into another re-run of the social media VC show is appealing to some, but it certainly isn’t for me.

Is it okay if I quote you on this? There have been designs floating around proposing we add `defer` to Rust, supposedly to enable asynchronous destructors - but intended to be used in sync code too.
I don’t necessarily feel strongly against adding`defer` as a complimentary tool, though a language extension might be a bit much. But I do feel strongly `defer` is not a viable alternative for RAII-style destructors, even in async. And I think you’re doing a great job explaining why that is.

Phew, that’s the roughest I’ve felt after a booster in a while. Mostly my own fault though. A quick timeline:
- Tuesday at noon: received booster
- Tuesday evening: started to feel a little feverish, had to lie down
- Wednesday: couldn’t do much the entire day. Did go for an hour walk though. Took two meetings, but had to drop early from the second
- Thursday: oops, I only slept four hours and had a fair bit of work to do. Getting through the day was tough, but I managed
- Friday: all better!

The cumulative number of SARS-CoV-2 infections in all RustConf events prior to this event was zero. That was possible by having basic precautions in place.
RustConf 2024, newly organized by the Rust Foundation, is the first event to break that streak.

2024-09-15 16:13:47 GMT

The acceptable number of people getting SARS at any given event should be zero. Not ten. Not one hundred. Zero.
SARS-CoV-2 causes chronic disease in 10-30% of infections. That means for every 10 people who are infected, for 1-3 of them that will be a life-altering experience. Some will eventually recover. Others may not.
As reports of people getting infected with SARS at RustConf roll in, it’s hard not to think of those whose life will inevitably change because of this.

2024-09-03 17:35:31 GMT

I really miss going to Rust and Wasm events, hanging out with folks, geeking out. But like, the last time I got Covid it knocked me flat for about six months - and I don't know how I'll respond to a Next Time. So there really can't be one.
It's so draining to feel like I'm the only one advocating for clean air, accessible environments, spaces that don't risk having participants walking away with long-term disabilities.
Like, I don't even know how to begin to explain that this is important.
