(To be clear they asked for help getting food. I didn't have cash or anything on me. He had checked the free fridge but it was empty of usable food - it had cans that couldnt be opened... good for families but not good for people without a can opener, etc et all - which means the community fridge is being used. Which is good.

I am a hacker god.
I got the 2008 Windows game Spore to run on my Ubuntu desktop.
Downloaded the Windows version of it via Linux Steam (its on sale for $5), used Steam's Proton compatibility layer, and attempted to run it.
Got 1004 and 2000 errors.
Went into ProtonDB and noticed folks running Ubuntu having the same errors but no solution.
Ran down a solution for another game from three years ago posted on Reddit. It involved editing the systems Windows registry (IN LINUX!!!) which amounts to a text file in linux. Tweaked the old solution to match today's environment (the file paths were off).
AND IT WORKED!!!
Need to go add the solution to ProtonDB now.

Ok! Wasn't a scam! Just a sign on offer for joining the gym and it was a good offer.
I ultimately didn't go through with it because:<li>gym was too far away (more than I realized by looking at maps beforehand)</li><li>the process for canceling at this gym was more than just telling them to cancel the membership</li><li>the specific workout did not fit my body constraints</li>
That said! It was a cool place with solid folks. So hopefully others can take advantage of it.
I'm off to look at a gym closer to me! Wish me luck!

Going to a scam "transition your body over six weeks" thing at a local Anytime Fitness.
If its a "let us take pictures of you and use them for marketing and not pay you but train you for six weeks" I'll do it. I've traded my soul and likeness for less.
But if its a "sign up for a free trial that you cant get out of" I won't.
Either way I know its a scam and I'm still walking into a trap...

Is this the hacker's / privacy advocate's way of acting out and putting one's self into harms way needlessly because of a traumatic event(s) and losing all care? I should talk to a therapist about this.

- So genocide is a very specific term.
You and I can go back and forth on the concepts of assymetrical warfare, responses of Hamas to colonialization, power dynamics, etc. But whatever violence Hamas commited and whether or not it was justified cannot be considered genocide against the Israelis.
Even if we set aside the tit for tats and any lead up to the current situation, Israel has a nominal right to respond to violence, even in kind.
But.
Not at this extreme and not against its current and continuous targets.
There is a concept of proportional response and justified response, and Israel has gone well beyond that. It is genocide now. And genocide is never justified.

- Yeah, agreed on the algae side. It's all about light. I was worried that these buckets would be too thin, but they're turning out alright... so... yay? (I never let the tap water air out. So I wonder if the little bit of chlorine or whatever is enough to kill off the algae but not enough to kill the roots of the plant. Not sure)
Concerning nutrient water left over! Cool thing!!! So at first I did a gallon per lettuce, cause thats the estimation for soil based growing. But, as you can see, each head of lettuce really will only take about a fourth to a third of a gallon.
So I thought about either having smaller containers, as you mentioned, or growing two plants, or whatever.
BUT!!! I found a cooler thing! I just do a "Cut and Come Again". So This first planting will take about 6 or 7 weeks to grow fully and consume around 1/3 of the nutrients in the bin (give or take).
When I harvest it, I cut about an inch to an inch and a half above the base line AND IT GROWS AGAIN!!!
The roots are already there, the infrastructure in place, so it takes about FOUR weeks for the second plant to grow. I cut again above the base line and GET A THIRD ONE going, lol!
So one seed and I get three crops out of a one gallon bin.
That's a passive grow system right there and I like it.

Every university protest against the genocide in Gaza has specific demands.
Each group wants their university to do something specific.
At UT Austin in Texas, for instance, the protesters have called for the school to divest from Israeli weapons manufacturers. I'll say that again. The school has official working agreements with weapons manufacturers that are currently being used to kill Gazans.
If your argument against students is "they're just using this as an excuse to not to go to class and just want to cause disruption" then you are either being lied to or you are the one lying to others.
If you have not heard of the specific demands and terms of what would stop the protests...
...then you might want to question where you get your news and what other propaganda you have consumed and currently believe.

Did you know that folks publish essays?
Like it's a thing.
I was introduced to Joan Didion by a lover. One of her books, The Year of Magical Thinking, introduced me to this new (to me!) form of writing.
Not novel. Not non-fiction how to or guide book. Not stream of consciousness. Not a poem.
But a well ordered essay. Musings. Conveyance of truths, sure. But not the technical guides or philosophical treatises that I was brought up to think were the brackets of the allowed writing forms.
I think I'll dive into essays.

(I love writing... I really enjoying writing thoughts in essay form. I even like writing long form, but it takes a lot out of me.
I enjoy writing in micro-blog format - first on Twitter and now on the Mastodon and similar Fediverse platforms.
But to do a "proper" blog, or gods forbid a book or a novel or such.... there's a massive wall. A block. A destruction of executive function.
I need to sort out a way to do long form essays with the mentality of micro blogging.
That'd be a thing, huh?)

(As an aside... and it gives me something to think about, so I appreciate that... concerning a free fridge - you need two things: a fridge (and shelf/pantry) and a place to put it. - Try to get both for free.
There's bound to be a person in town that has a free refrigerator. If you say you're taking for charity, they may even be able to write off the donation (local laws may vary on if you need an established group - don't worry too much if they're not able to, there will be someone with a fridge taking up space and will give it away free if you just come get rid of it for them).
So far as a place to put it, churches and even some businesses may let you park a fridge and pantry outside on their property and donate the electricity to run it so long as you maintain it (keep it clean and in good upkeep / repair).
So! You may not need to save up any money at all. Just find a fridge and find a place!

I lot of terrible things have happened in my life recently (and a fresh one last week!) that I have not and will not post here.
But the result is that my old life is gone. Completely.
I'm still going to work in infosec. Still hack. Still pentest. At least for the few years. It's a solid job. But my family is gone and atomized (Some deaths. Some breakups. Custody issues. Etc. Et al.)
I've made it through. And that was not a given. I only made it through because friends and family swarmed me. Would not let me be alone - despite my best efforts.
If I can get through the next several months financially... which I think I can - I will begin a new life.
Moving forward, I am going to dive heavily into Buddhism. There is pragmatism, care, love, community, and a framework there that is vastly different from the high demand religions that I grew up with.
I'm going to see if I can pursue becoming a Buddhist priest. And I want to dive even more so in solarpunk initiatives. I've had a lot of success with that and want to continue seeing it through.
Building things locally, while streamlining and establishing cooperations and coordinating globally.
I think a Buddhist priest building post-scarcity programs and forging into new economic paradigms is a solid new life.
This is a plan. A direction. And there will be deviations, changes, and adaptations moving forward.
Life is impermanence afterall :P

Hosted a party for teenagers and preteens over the weekend - My oldest is now officially a teenager.
Had one of their friends, a young girl or femme presenting enby (I didn't catch their pronouns) ask me if I had any feminine products.
I checked my partners stores but it wasn't quite what this young person needed - so we made a run and got them some.
I think I'll set up a little "guest hygiene" kit in my guest bathroom and keep it stocked with various accouterments.
Reminds me, I need to stock up on various teas, cokes, update my basic liquor cabinet.
Dang, I need to step up my guest-host game. Can't keep blaming 2020 for its disruptions in society.

- Yeah, so if a person is emptying the fridge, there are three scenarios that present itself.
1) They need it. They have a family. They're hungry. They need all the food. Great! They're getting fed! To answer this, neighbors should answer the need and find ways to stock more food.
2) They're reselling it. One thing - if someone needs money, they need money. Maybe its for healthcare or other essentials, so you can just provide those to them directly. But, this one doesnt really happen often. Because, the more free fridges you have (and the more folks know about it), the less will buy from resellers when they can just get it free themselves.
3) They're emptying it maliciously just to cause disruption. If someone did this, it will become known. Your neighbors will always notice them grabbing the food, loading a truck, and leaving, for example. The big thing here is know your neighbors and talk with them often. Know who is giving to and using the fridge. Convey information. If someone is sabotaging a mutual aid effort, confront them and stop them.

- So, you and I both have that attacker mindset. It's a good mindset to use.
So threat model it out. Establish the threat actor and their motive. Establish the threat scenario. And you have your model that we can protect against.
What would a bad actor look like?
Lets rule out someone who accidentally puts in bad food. Like, good faith, they tried, but it was bad.
That happens at grocery stores and restaurants too. What do people do? They check the cans, smell the food, look at it. If its bad, they toss it out.
This already happens at food pantry distributions. We get a box full of grapefruit and there are ALWAYS two or three that have gone bad and have mold on the outside of it. They're squishy and have gone rotten. What do we do? We toss it in a side box and throw it in the compost heap. What happens if one of our neighbors gets one accidentally? They look at it, see its bad, and toss it out.
So folks are already doing their own QA.
So moving on from accidental, what do we do if someone is malicious? Well, what do you do if someone intentionally poisons food at a restaurant. You find out who did and take care of them.
So that takes care of RECEIVING malicious food from a store or restaurant (and the Bill Emerson Food Donation Act specifically does not cover malicious intent - they can be prosecuted).
So next model. What if someone puts in poisoned food into the fridge or pantry maliciously? First off, we only allow sealed food or fresh produce. Fresh produce you can inspect and see if its good or bad. Sealed food, you can check the seals, just like you do in a grocery store.
You're basically doing the same threat model as you would Halloween candy distribution from your neighbors.
In the end, hardly anyone is going to do that. If they do, they get found out pretty quickly and dealt with.

Ok. Now that the seed library is built, I'm moving on to the next project.
Food Rescue.
Currently, I volunteer at my local community refrigerator and pantry....
....and by that I mean a literal refrigerator and pantry that sits outside.
Anyone can come up to it and put food in. And anyone can come up to it and take food out. No means testing. Mutual aid. Give a food, take a food.
Right now, it's being stocked with individual donations (people buying extra food while doing their own grocery runs or putting in extra food that they thought they were going to use but ended up not using all of it), overflow from food pantry distributions, and home garden and hydroponics for fresh produce.
That's great and I want to expand that, especially the home garden and hydroponics for fresh produce (see the Seed Library and hydroponics bin build pinned posts for efforts in that area).
All of that said, my local town is not doing a lot of food rescue.
We have grocery stores, convenience stores, and restaurants throwing away good food at the end of the day.
I want to get that food away from the dumpsters and into the community fridge / pantry.
So that's my next project. And I'll document it here. (I swear at some point, I'll put all of this together up on hacker(dot)solar - I just really suck at that. I don't know why.)

In the US, we have the Bill Emerson Food Donation Act that removes liability from donators, gleaners (food rescuers), and distributors:
"The Bill Emerson Food Donation Act establishes Federal protection from civil and criminal liability for persons involved in the donation and distribution of food and grocery products to needy individuals when certain criteria are met. In order to receive protection under the Act, a person or gleaner must donate in good faith apparently wholesome food or apparently fit grocery products to a nonprofit organization for ultimate distribution to needy individuals. The Act also provides protection against civil and criminal liability to the nonprofit organizations that receive such donated items in good faith. "

- So there are so many here that not everyone has to return seeds. 1 seed will create create hundreds or sometimes thousands of seeds.
A lot of the gardening enthusiasts in town can keep this stocked just by themselves, for example. So you really can't abuse it.
That said, yes, in plenty of seed libraries you can see who donated the seeds back. And that's an indication of exchange.
But, if it gets down to it, it's all about establishing a mindset. If someone comes and asks "Hey, do you have any sunflower seeds?" and you don't, you would answer, "It doesn't look like we have some right now. If you go out and buy some some and plant them, would you bring some back to the library so that others can have access to it as well?"
This is just building community.

My local library built the seed library!
The local Master Gardeners provided a lot of the intitial seeds (oh my gosh we are stocked!!!). They used an old card catalogue to store them. Today's the kickoff!
The idea is you "check out seeds" from the library, plant/grow/harvest, let some go to seed, then "return the seeds" back to the library!
Free seeds for everyone!

- I don't see the issue here. This is not AI in the sense of ChatGPT. This is AI in creating audio out of text.
I've used ElevenLabs before. All you do is feed in a voice sample and then give it text and it just reads the text aloud.
This is good technology in that it automates text to speech, that's it.
While it could encroach on voice actors, I believe there'd still be a market for voice actors that could go beyond that speech synthesis of ElevenLabs.
There are so many books that have not and will not be produced into audiobooks. This will automate that.
This greatly increases availability of books to the visually impaired, those who can't read, and to mass translation.
Again... this is not the AI Grift of ChatGPT and other weird stuff. This is just automating text to speech. The AI part is just on making the speech sound more natural and less roboty. This is a great use of the technology.

In a morbid sense of pleasure, I've been watching the Truth Social stock plummet (DJT on Nasdaq).
As I am typing this, the stock is hovering around $23 dollars (from something like $75 dollars three weeks ago)
Truth Social is running on an old an outdated version of Mastodon and their financials are incredibly terrible.
It's just a pump and dump with a lot of money laundering and bribe injections.
That said, Trump, et al, were hoping to get a lot of money out of this. As Trump can't cash out for another few months, this stock may be a pennystock by that time.
And as I was typing this, it has broken past $23 dollars and is now in the high $22 dollars. This is so fun!

I hate when posts go "viral" or get some legs, even in the Fediverse.
It'll bring in reply guys who comment on that one post without having any context. I cant put every edge case into a single post to cover all possible scenarios. And then when I try and engage to discuss or correct what I was trying to convey, it just gets bogged down into debates that dont debate what I was trying to convey.
Like. A recent post went into growing your own food and giving free food to neighbors. And folks were dragging it because "its not possible to fully feed yourself so why try?!?!". Ok. Fine! First off, it might be. I havent there yet. Second, even just replacing a single plant saves money and lessens dependence. Its not a zero sum / all or nothing game.
Anyhow. Holy shit is it demoralizing.
I'm not the best at determining if something is a troll or sincere and I've mistaken sincere posts for trolls in the past and thats the worst. So I try to approach everything sincerely (been failing at that lately).
Its exhausting.

- My current setup is providing for leafy greens. It's the easiest to start. See picture for example.
My next addition will be either for root veggies (like potatos) or for peppers and tomatoes using a passive reservoir kratky-plus system.
One thing I would encourage is NEVER to approach this as an all or nothing. No one ever builds a system that replaces all food right away. Instead, start small - a single grow shelf or even a single container - and build up as you have time and budget to build up. Once built, it takes incredibly little time to maintain.
I'm saving $150 a month right now with just my one shelf. As I build more and more, I save more and more.

- This is a big reason why I always emphasis growing for neighbors. A big part of mutual aid is finding efficiencies in cooperation. As isolated (rugged!) individuals, we lose economies of scale. By working together we all gain more free time.
And with a little free time... we can find even more ways to make more free time.
That phenomena you describe of "laundry or gardening" is an intentional construct designed to keep us laboring. And, as you describe, its terrible.
So, if you are unable to do this right now, take from mutual aid until you have enough - products and services - until you can get free time and give back. And if you can do this right now, give back. As we pour in, we get out even more.

- I focus specifically on passive and automated systems. I use kratky and kratky plus hydroponics and after I mix the nutrients and plant the intitial seeds I dont touch them again except to harvest or mix extra water every couple of weeks.

Picked up some food safe 5-gallon buckets for only $3 USD a piece at the local Firehouse Subs.
Gonna build a kratky-plus hydroponic setup out of them (water reservoir to buckets with a passive float valve).
Still gotta pick up some more, but I'll check back every weekend.

I find it morbidly fascinating that our first big inclination for AI was to automate writing and art instead of food production, etc.

- You know, as much as I post about my local library and all the resources they offer, I hadn't realized that I internalized data retrieval as an individual problem.
Of course your local library would be a primary starting place to check on ways to retrieve and store data and may have a CD reader!

Seed germination update! - 1 week
This picture was taken 7 days (1 week) after initial planting. (Planting on March 26th, 2024 - this picture of the germination took on April 2nd, 2024)
I have not touched the bin since planting. Lights are automated. Water is from the grow bin. I did not germinate separately and move over - the seed was planted directly in the bin).

The Queen Mary 2 is the only one that I know of that is a proper ocean liner (meaning its primary purpose is to transport passengers instead of being a vacation getaway like an ocean cruise).

- That didnt happen at all. The distros incorporated the backdoored software into their pre-releases and rolling releases. They were prepared to integrate them into their stable releases in a couple of weeks.
Standard testing did not find this at all. Any such processes (and there arent many) failed to find this.
