What is the thinking behind posting social media selfies that are mirror images…not selfies taken in the mirror… but images that have been flipped so text is backwards.
Can people not see they're flipped? Do they not care?
Sometimes they're holding a book cover.
What is that?

Here's the problem I have with Star Wars and Star Trek:
The two of them combined suck up 80% of the science fiction oxygen in the culture. All the unique new science fiction has to try to thrive in that 20% margin and the odds are that they'll get missed.

28. Do you practice "kill your darlings" in your work?
Yes, but I think there is a lot of confusion about what it means. It doesn't mean to kill your favorite characters. I mean sometimes it does but that's not the point. The point is you often need to remove a chapter or paragraph or sentence that you just love, but isn't making the story better.
The story is the only darling that counts. If you have any darling bits that weaken it, killll themmmmmm!

☝️ That's one way. I am making it up as I go along. I start with the assumption that a debut book probably doesn't make any money. I'm almost at the end of a fixed budget spent on a pre-release blog tour with @npub1j7m…g2gv, Amazon ads, BookBub, and Booksy. I also offered the digital ARCs on NetGalley and ran a give away on GoodReads.
Sounds like a lot. But it's never enough. The next phase is entering it into any awards I can qualify for.

"Hello" the figure cried out.
"Hello, I can hear you," I entered the cave. It's walls were dry and covered in webs at the entrance. Further in hung elaborate curtains of silk.
"Hello," a woman's voice faint, breathless and fearful.
"I'm coming!" i said as I turned a corner and entered the tunnel lined with expensive white silk. I could see her now. I ran to her.
The fabric behind me closed. The figure bobbed and fell. Just a lure. A gigantic spider covered me in silk. The tunnel spun around me.

To all the #WritingCommunity looking to publish a book one day:
You can't quite prepare your ego for the result of getting what you get when you publish a book. If it fails your ego will be knocked about. If it succeeds your ego will ALSO be knocked about. Take care of yourself and find the time to breathe, eat well, and exercise. It's a hell of a ride, but it is impactful no matter which way it goes.

It could be interpreted as a love letter to violent incels.
And that's how the violent incels interpreted it.
So, it's not wrong to hate the result. I think the filmmakers didn't intend that. Maybe they should have seen it. But art can be messy.

2023-09-04 01:07:10 GMT

I finally watched Joker (2019). I avoided it for a long time because of the people I knew who really gravitated to it. They were the same people who had strong Trump leanings. The movie has that. There are scenes that could've been lifted from January 6th footage. But it's more than that and better.
It's dark and borders on toxic, but it tries to walk a fine line and succeeds.

I'm always suspicious when the universe pays out.
It's not imposter syndrome but it's related.

If your choices are publish unethically or don't publish, your choice is clear. Don't publish. Don't use generative AI artwork on your cover. Pay an artist. If you can't afford an artist, you can't afford to publish.

I just drafted the outline for a new WIP, god damn it.
I think it will be a novella.
The title is going to be "The Devil's Therapist."
It's based on my #VisualWritingPrompt entry today.
I've never outlined a story so quickly.
Stay tuned.

3. Is there one piece of well-known writing advice you ignore?
I don't fear adverbs.
I write plainly,
I draft quickly, and
I swear effusively.
"I also like to play with dialog tags," he confirmed.

If you need a clue as to how desperately bad actors want you to doubt reality, look no further than the insane attempts to smear Tom Hanks.
They want you to doubt that good exists.

The "spaceport" was a dodgy, low-rent nightmare, even Jim could sense that. His parents looked stressed. Ruthie's passport had expired on this contract. It was going to cost them something precious, money or gear or something.
As they got closer the engine test bunker erupted with a VN24 burn test. Loud, raucous burbling that made it impossible to hear anything. But it was warm and Jim was drawn to it while Mom and Dad went to barter.
The planet was always cold. His cheeks flushed from the heat.

Hey guys.
Sorry. It was our intent to stop procrastinating last week but time got away from us.
Let's all resolve to end procrastination next week though, kay?
