A big news for SimpleX Chat app security:
Android APKs released on GitHub and F-Droid are now 100% reproducible!
It means that you can verify that the app is secure, even if the download site was hacked.
From v6.5 our release process is:
1) build Android apps on two independent systems and confirm they are 100% identical;
2) cryptographically "sign" them;

But not sure what you mean by "sock puppet" accounts, the implication here is that we are creating some accounts that would undermine GrapheneOS? If so, this is ridiculously untrue - all statements we make, we make under our own name.
That various people spread FUD about any system, including SimpleX network and GrapheneOS, is inevitable - whatever is their reasoning.

@nprofile…dugx @nprofile…vs97 we have experience with XMPP, and it doesn't provide metadata privacy, and the security of e2e encryption has many limitations. So we're building something better.
The core problem of XMPP is that it was protocol-first, and it's a dead end for any widely adopted software system - it has to be product-first.
We only have wide adoption of the Web thanks to Netscape who made it a product people can use, disregarding competing browsers.

We are improving repudiation (deniability) in SimpleX protocols!

We believe that repudiation is very important for private communications.
Currently only a part of SimpleX protocol stack provides it – client-to-client e2e encryption, that includes double ratchet (aka Signal) algorithm.
This proposal (https://github.com/simplex-chat/simplexmq/blob/ep/cmd-auth/rfcs/2024-02-03-deniability.md) adds repudiation to client-relay protocol.
It is already mostly implemented and will be fully rolled out by v5.7 of SimpleX Chat.

Migration of XFTP servers xftp4, 5, 6 today at 15:00 UTC (8am PT, 4pm UK, 5pm CET)
These servers won't be available for up to 30 minutes (can be longer depending on DNS propagation).
The migration will move the servers to a different datacenter with a lower latency for most users - sending files will be more reliable.
If you experienced any issues with files being stuck half-way, this migration will address it.
You can temporarily disable these servers in the app to avoid any disruption.

@npub19lp…32eh I actually was picking the companies that made the biggest positive changes to the democratisation of computing and to decentralization of the Internet at the time. So I honestly don't think there are any better examples than Apple, NetScape and Matrix. Even what Google did was net positive at the time. It goes in circles, really, and we are back to centralised model now that at their time Apple and NetScape saved us from. The hero of the day is often the villain of tomorrow.

@npub19lp…32eh appreciate the sarcasm :) We should do both - build the future and understand the past to avoid repeating its mistakes. I’m not saying that cookies is a good mechanism for today, but it was necessary and the only viable thing at the time. So why not acknowledge its value today.

@npub19lp…32eh what you really should blame is users willing to surrender their data and unwilling to pay for the services they use even $1-2 a year. Once it changes, privacy abuses will stop. We are betting on exactly that - that many users will pay. Not VCs. And non profits aren’t much better, really, as they grow.

@npub19lp…32eh equally, about Apple - you are only focussing on the negatives of late stage Apple long after venture funding phase, completely missing the value they created to the world. Apple liberated computing and made it accessible to the masses. It would not have happened without venture funding and it would have not achieved the same without it. You can’t blame VC funding for privacy abuses long after their exit.

@npub19lp…32eh you are completely missing the point here. At the time, cookies was a major innovation and the only way forward. Without cookies for user authentication web simply cannot function. That this mechanism can be used for privacy abuse is unexpected side effect that we now see as evil, and it’s solved by simply prohibiting 3rd party cookies, and we need other solutions, but you wouldn’t be able to log in to mastodon, for example, without cookies.

@npub1gf9…ulh4 it is indeed a good design for remote control, as long as you don’t let anybody random connect - check out the broadcast bot in repo we use to send status update, for example. Or just don’t create public address. It seems a more secure control channel than curl, etc., and in some cases more convenient than ssh (and nobody can stop you from creating a bot that allows to execute arbitrary shell commands via chat, but I wouldn’t do it:).

Planned downtime for smp10.simplex.im – 2-4 hours starting from 4pm on July 9 (Sunday)
The relay will be migrated to the datacenter in the UK to reduce the latency for most users. The migration itself takes less than 30 minutes, the DNS changes propagate in 1-3 hours (based on tests we ran).
If you use Tor, it will be available as soon migration is complete, within 30 minutes.
If you have some important contacts where you use smp10 relay to receive messages you can switch them in advance.

@npub1vkw…vdnp just never came around to it - probably we will prioritise it a bit more in 2024. We want to have a bit more protocol stabilisation before wide adoption, and this friction serves as a natural barrier that only more experienced get through - although that’s not the main reason, it’s simply priorities and lack of time to do everything we want to do…

@npub1axx…4lsd @npub1uf6…d07h 100% - if we build support for cloud, you will be able to self-host - it would be the same XFTP servers as you use now to send the files, it won’t be a new server… It does remind me the evolution of FTP from the solution for transfer to the solution for storage…
