I am guessing you are talking about the TCL phone? If yes, plenty of people use their phone without a screen protector. I do, most people in my family do, etc.

A bit delayed, but happy Friday! I was at IFA this week so we have a special epside highlighting all the newest tech from the show.

PSA: If you share a YouTube video using the native share feature it now attaches your user ID (?si=xxxxxx) to the URL automatically.
YT likely does this to growth-hack DMs. When someone clicks on the link, YT can start a DM thread between you two automatically with this ID even if they found the link outside of the YT app.
If you post links publicly, I strongly recommend deleting the ID unless you want to post your user profile.

I would really like having one single subscription that would let me jump through every major publication's paywall. I'd be willing to pay $30+ a month, but it would have to cover all. I'd love to pay for journalism, but it just doesn't make sense to subscribe to any one particular paper when the reporting is spread out over hundreds of them

2 announcements:
1. I'm in Thailand taking a short break from the usual routine, so no Friday Checkout this week.
2. But because I can't actually stop making videos, I'm also starting a new YouTube channel with Maja called Submerged, haha. As you might know diving is our biggest hobby so this channel is dedicated to making videos about dive gear and more. If you're interested, you can subscribe here: https://www.youtube.com/@submerged-tech
See you next week! 🌴🤿☀️🦈

I find it very frustrating that the only opinions people seem to be able to have about AI are:
A/ it's the next coming of Christ, just deploy it everywhere, and if it has any issues those will be fixed with the next update anyway
B/ it's completely useless, has never and will never do anything useful and it's all just a scam by tech bros who are too dumb to realize that it's useless

My favorite place to read about anything related to e-bikes is Micromobility.io, an industry publication with deep knowledge of all the companies and trends.
I interviewed their CEO Prabin Joel Jones for my upcoming video on the collapse of Cowboy, Vanmoof, Rad Bikes & co. Exclusive for Nebula viewers:

The main video will come to YT and Nebula later.

I'm working on my next video which will dive deep into the struggles of the big 3 e-bike brands: Vanmoof, Cowboy & Rad Power Bikes.
I had a very interesting ~1h interview with Eliott Wertheimer, the CEO who took over Vanmoof in 2023. He told me what he thought the went wrong and how he has tried to turn things around in the last 2.5 yrs.
I'll include a bunch of highlights in the main video, but Nebula viewers can watch the whole interview weeks before that goes live:

I really wish people would stop equating "not selling user data" with privacy. None of the tech giants sell, or even share your data with third parties directly. They would be stupid to, it's their most valuable asset. They hoard it! Doesn't mean they don't collect & use every bit of it themselves.

This has to be the wildest opt-in checkbox I've ever seen

- Instead of "by agreeing you are opting in" they added two negatives "by NOT agreeing you are opting OUT" to confuse you

Damn, while biking to the studio I was looking at a car to make sure it didn't drive in front of me and I missed a lady who decided to cross the zebra ... so I rode into her. Thankfully just a light bounce, no damage and she just walked away after some well deserved yelling at me. But I just... didn't see her at all even though I know this zebra well and always make sure to not be an asshole to pedestrians.
Not even sure what conclusion to draw because I was paying attention, normal speed etc.

The funniest example was one firm switching to Zoho mail. They said using an Indian service was way less risky than using a US one.
It's hard to describe how much goodwill towards America Trump's policies have erased.

2025-09-01 12:41:26 GMT

I recently talked with a guy who builds software for small & medium sized German insurance firms and he says almost all of their clients are working on removing US services from their tech stack due to perceiving them as highly risky. This includes cloud services, office tools, AI tools, etc. So far he said the switch is a mixed bag with some successes and some blunders, but the push is very clear.
Highly anecdotal stuff, but maybe this cut is deeper than I expected.

2025-08-15 11:55:50 GMT

Ah I just read the comments and was reminder again that I am both an Apple hater and an Apple apologist, while also being simultaneously a CCP shill and unquestioningly supportive of the US tech war on China.

To the people who keep saying we should "stay out of politics" and "stick with tech", I wonder how they imagine that works when tech itself has no interest instaying out of politics

Israel: "We destroyed the capabilities of the Syrian army in the largest air operation we have carried out in our history". 250+ bombings + they are now occupying territory, too. My friends in Damascus had chemical plants & more blown up next to them.
They are demiliatarizing a state that has not only NOT attacked Israel, but whose new leadership has, in fact, defeated allies of Iran. This is terrorism.

I get so many sophisticated AI phising emails as a creator that to me AI has caused a net DECREASE in productivity & of course the scams create financial losses.
AI is always presented as a productivity & revenue booster for users, but I wonder whether it's not a net negative on the level of society

64.3% of German electricity now comes from renewables, with a big increase in solar pushing the record. Losing ground is coal and natural gas.

If you are worried about your government becoming authoritarian/bad/fascist/whatever, it might be an especially good time to make a big push to move your communications to encrypted services like Signal. I promise it's hard to move contacts at first, but then it just works and is nice

While I love the recent Bluesky rally, I also want to remind everyone that Mastodon is the only properly decentralized, billionaire-proof and VC-free social media for now. I get that most people couldn't care less about protocols, but if you do, I recommend maintaining a presence there :)

4.5k on Threads
1.8k in Bluesky, of which 900 came this week
Engagement on all 3 is pretty high, too. This X-odus is finally really happening. Yay! To keep up, I'm trying OpenVibe, a client that can handle all 3 from one app. So far so good!

Yep, really hard to understand. The only thing I can think of is that this couldn't have been a mistake, but all the people in this chain thinking "oh cool, footage of an expensive car going wroom" without thinking breaking speeding limits is an issue anyones shoudl care about

I really thought the previous drama around MKBHD's wallpaper app was overblown. It's a weirly overprice app, weirdly announced, but ... so what? Just don't buy it!
But this is truly midboggling. He filmed himself in a Lamborghini going 96mph in a 35mph school zone. WTF? How did he think that was ok?
Being a big enough influencer must melt your brain and lose touch with reality at some point...

Wow, quite a bombshell! Ecosia & Qwant join forces to build own search index. Their reasons:
- Bing massively raising API costs
- geopolitical risk with US increased
- EU DMA rules make competition easier
- GenAI massively changes search, is both a threat & opportunity
Rollout starts in France next quarter already 🤯

We're so accustomed to prices always increasing that we forget that much of software should actually get CHEAPER over time.
Cloud costs are going down and companies often have less new stuff to add, hence lower development costs. Also, as they get more customers, they can spread those fixed costs out more.
Instead we get increases because we're trapped & can't switch.

Israel is now deliberately shooting at UN peacekeepers whose job is to document potential war crimes among other things. Despite this, Israel still gets support from countries like Germany while the US has even sent its own troops to defend the country.
Meanwhile the US and Germany think that allowing Ukraine to use weapons they supply against military targets in a country that is actively bombing it is unacceptable escalation.
What a weird, twisted world.
