An update on this for the three of you interested: getting somewhere I like and starting to feel that I’m in the home stretch. Another week or two and I’ll share what I’m up to.

Lots of nested selectors and imported files are keeping it manageable for now, but will certainly want to flatten the end result into a single file at the very least.

So far so good with a bunch of new (to me) native CSS like variables and grid.
It's when I start getting into override management around responsive treatments, custom page styling, etc. that my stylesheets get unwieldy. Sass mixins always helped tame the complexity when I hit this stage, and I knew how to use them properly to avoid bloat.
I see that native mixins are proposed, but looks like not an option yet. May need Sass after all. https://blog.master.dev/thoughts-on-native-css-mixins/

Now that the weather is cooling I'm finally getting into this. Happy to report that Eleventy is a joy so far, the multiple collection mechanism is unlocking new ideas that will no doubt send me down a deep rabbit hole.

If I were spinning up a new static site 10 years ago, it would have been Jekyll & Sass.
I hear the SSG hotness these days is Eleventy., Do we do Sass anymore or has CSS fully caught up?

Only finding old articles but I assume Bluesky <> Mastodon federation still hasn’t happened yet, given that I never see anything from there over here.

only thing that comes to mind here is terroir of the actual ingredients having different levels of various compounds, including the yeast used to ferment. Minerality is a very faint possibility due to differing water sources/profiles.

without going too deep on those, you're not going to know which is/are used in a beer ahead of time like 99% of the time, so may as well consider that all beers have hops to a degree and some you might luckily be less allergic to than others. But it's the hop product that'll determine that.

2025-10-23 03:26:39 GMT

- reply

that's not correct. Starch sources for beer that lead to fermentation/booze can be barley, corn, rice, rye, oats, etc. Grains, or just straight up sugar in some cases.
Hops are a flavouring agent over and above the sugar source, used to bitter and add aromatics. Basically any commercial beer on the market from any country has hops, with just a few types of specialty beers aside.
Hop product can be all over the place tho, and it's possible some types will be less reactive than others.

in 70 years historians will look back at this era wondering, surely, they must have known they were on the brink so why did no one stop the escalation?
Assuming, of course, there are still historians.

On the weekend someone interjected into the conversation that we were “talking about things that happened in the 1900s”
Something about that framing really does put it in sharp relief that anything that took place in years with a 1 in front of them happened over a quarter of a century ago.

advance voting was the same way. People are unusually riled up for this one, my hunch is that it’s a mini-referendum on the Broadway Plan now that enough redevelopment signs are up and the impact it will have is starting to become more apparent. Watching TEAM’s results in particular.

in a past job, we had a financial controller with an off-by-one email address to the team-wide alias. The first sensitive email leaking PII didn’t lead to a fix, but the second one leaking salary details sure did.
And I thought *that* was amateur hour.

Ever edit a PDF in MacOS Preview and have it mysteriously go password protected, effectively locking you out?
It's been a bug for at least two years, and the workaround I've found is to edit the PDF in Chrome instead – which you can still do even after the MacOS password has been inflicted on it. Which I have many questions about.
PDF is the gift that keeps on giving.
