Two years ago, I warned in City
AM that the UK's Online Safety Bill risked undermining privacy and paving the way for government overreach into our digital lives.
Today, that concern feels more urgent than ever.
Last month, the EU Commission released its ProtectEU roadmap, outlining plans to provide law enforcement with access to encrypted data by 2030.
This is not about targeting specific suspects. It is about building the legal and technical infrastructure for mass surveillance.
Big Brother Watch have revealed that live facial recognition systems deployed in UK cities are wrong nearly 9 out of 10 times, scanning innocent people without their knowledge or consent. This is already happening in our streets, at stations, even at protests.
Now imagine that biometric surveillance linked to a centralised digital currency.
Imagine every payment, location, contact and movement tracked, stored and correlated.
This is not theoretical.
We risk building a society where privacy is gone, autonomy is restricted, and control is centralised in the name of convenience and safety.
The combination of decrypted messaging, facial recognition, CBDCs, and mandatory ID checks and full KYC creates a full spectrum surveillance regime. A system where dissent is not crushed by force, but quietly discouraged through constant surveillance.
What’s at stake is freedom of thought, movement and expression. We should be defending them, not trading them for the illusion of safety.

Big Brother Watch has repeatedly warned that the UK is quietly creeping into a surveillance state. Live facial recognition is being deployed across streets, train stations, shopping centres and even at public protests. But this technology is not just targeting criminals. It is scanning millions of innocent people without their knowledge or consent.
False alarms with real consequences
Studies show that the vast majority of facial recognition matches are false. According to Big Brother Watch, in 80 deployments across the UK, 89.7% of alerts were false positives. In London alone, 150 out of 173 matches by the Metropolitan Police were incorrect, resulting in an error rate of nearly 87%. In some cases, people were stopped, searched or fingerprinted as a result.
These mistakes are not harmless. They are invasive, humiliating and difficult to challenge.

It is all connected
Facial images from passports, CCTV, phones and even social media are increasingly fed into large government and private databases. Big Brother Watch has raised concerns that a digital pound or central bank digital currency would allow the state to track every payment in real time. Combined with facial recognition and phone surveillance, this creates a fullmap of your movements, your spending and your associations.
Your phone is not private
Every step we take with a smartphone in our pocket feeds data to corporations and authorities. Location, biometrics, browsing history and more. If that is tied to payment systems and real time identity scanning, we move closer to a system where everything we do can be watched, recorded and judged.
Know Your Customer (KYC) rules are already mandating identity checks for basic services. This is not theoretical. It is happening now.
Where does this lead?
The future we are heading toward is one of forced compliance. A world in which you are monitored constantly. In which you are guilty until proven innocent. In which dissent is quietly suppressed by the knowledge that you are being watched.
We are at a turning point
If we do not push back, we risk building a society where privacy is gone, autonomy is restricted, and control is centralised in the name of convenience and safety. This goes far beyond retail surveillance. It marks the steady build up of a digital infrastructure designed for monitoring and control.

George Orwell warned of a future where every move was watched, every word monitored, and every thought shaped by fear. But even he did not imagine a world where your money could be used to control you.

KYC doesn’t just put your data at risk; it puts people at risk.
Hackers recently demanded $20 million in Bitcoin from Coinbase, threatening to leak sensitive customer data.
While no passwords or private keys were accessed, the attackers obtained full names, addresses, contact details, partial Social Security and bank account numbers, and identity documents. This is the kind of data that can be weaponised for identity theft, fraud, or worse.
This is exactly the kind of risk I raised on the compliance panel at the Financial Times Digital Assets Summit last week. While KYC and compliance frameworks are presented as security features, they often do the opposite. They create massive, centralised honeypots of personal data that can and do get breached, sold, or exploited.
We’ve seen what can happen when that data gets into the wrong hands. Earlier this year, David Balland, the co-founder of Ledger, was kidnapped along with his wife. His captors cut off one of his fingers and sent it to a business associate to demand crypto ransom. He was rescued by French special forces, but the message was clear: real-world consequences are now linked to digital identity exposure.
We need better solutions that don’t force users to sacrifice privacy and safety for access.
Compliance shouldn’t come at the cost of security.

I occasionally get paid in Bitcoin and usually need to spend it on bills soon after, so I’ve been looking for a simple, secure way to accept payments that’s easy to manage and simple enough to track for accounting. I tried out Bitkey today and here’s how it went:
Bitkey is a relatively new self-custody wallet from Block (Jack Dorsey’s team), launched in late 2023. It combines a mobile app with a compact hardware device and uses a 2 of 3 multisig security model.
Setup:
Honestly? Really smooth.
The app is clean and intuitive, and the device feels sturdy and well-designed. Setup took minutes, with no complex steps or confusing jargon. Perfect for newbies.
Not your typical wallet:
Bitkey doesn’t use a traditional 12 or 24 word seed phrase. Instead, it encrypts your mobile key and backs it up to your cloud (iCloud or Google Drive). Recovery works through a combination of your phone, the Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s support key. That means you still have fallback options if something goes wrong without needing to manage or write down a seed phrase.
There’s no built-in option to export a seed phrase through the app, though it is technically possible using more advanced methods. This is intentionally hidden for most users to keep things simple and reduce risk.
It also includes an emergency access feature that lets you assign a trusted contact who can help recover your bitcoin if something happens to you, using the inheritance option built into the system.
It works through a mix of your phone, the device, and their support key. That means you still have fallback options if something goes wrong.
Bitkey isn’t built for hardcore Bitcoin purists or users who want full manual control over privacy, such as coin control, Tor routing, or avoiding cloud backup.
So it’s not aimed at toxic maxis or privacy maximalists, but that is kind of the point.
Pros:
- Fast, beginner-friendly setup
- Secure enough for regular use
- Easy to track payments
- Built-in Inheritance feature with contact-based recovery
- No seed phrase stress
Considerations:
- You don’t hold all the keys yourself
- Depends on cloud backup and Bitkey support for recovery
- Not as battle-tested as some other wallets
- You’ll need an on/off-ramp to convert your bitcoin, which may introduce KYC, though peer-to-peer options like Hodl Hodl can help you avoid it.
- BitKey does not yet support Lightening so you can only send on-chain
Summary:
If you want a wallet for everyday use, whether receiving Bitcoin payments, making occasional transactions, or simply holding small balances with peace of mind, Bitkey is a great option. It’s user-friendly, secure, and designed for people who want a practical way to interact with Bitcoin without diving into technical complexity.
Just be aware of the trade-offs. It won’t suit everyone, but for many real-world use cases, it ticks a lot of boxes. I love it!

Bitcoin was born as freedom money. Decentralised, borderless, and immune to state control. But is that ideal being flipped on its head?
Are a growing number of institutional players backed by governments inflating Bitcoin’s value not as a currency of the people but as a Strategic Reserve Asset to prop up the very system it was built to escape?

UK regulators are driving bitcoin businesses away while other countries capitalise on the opportunity. The FCA’s blanket cryptoasset policy is crushing innovation, stifling growth, pushing companies offshore, and making the UK increasingly hostile to bitcoin businesses.
Companies are scaling back or leaving the UK due to restrictive and unclear regulations. Meanwhile, the US, UAE, and Singapore are actively attracting bitcoin investment.
Bitcoin is not a meme coin. It is the future of finance.

One of my favorite film monologues is Hunter S. Thompson's Wave Speech from 'Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas'.
"San Francisco in the mid-'60s… a sense we were winning… riding a high and beautiful wave."
In 1970, Nixon outlawed psychedelics and shut down research, silencing a movement that questioned authority and sought higher consciousness.
In 1971, he took the United States off the gold standard, unleashing unchecked government spending.
Two moves that severed us from energy, both inner and economic, halting human progress in exchange for control.
The wave did not recede naturally, it was forced back. Nixon's war on drugs was about suppressing dissent, not health. The end of the gold standard was more than economic policy; it enabled perpetual war and financial manipulation.
Thompson saw the sixties as a lost breakthrough, a moment when humanity stood at the edge of something better, only to be dragged back into the machine.
As he brilliantly wrote, that was the moment when the wave finally broke and rolled back.

The BBC’s FOI exemption is deeply troubling, shielding serious scandals from scrutiny. This was the first response I received from the BBC when I tried to hold them accountable for their misinformation and disinformation.
I raised concerns about this exception with the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO), and they said the BBC exemption stands; see their response below.
The BBC has inflicted notable harm by consistently promoting incorrect and misleading narratives about Bitcoin. This perpetuates negative public perceptions and overshadows its potential as a transformative technology.
By framing Bitcoin in a way that often lacks clarity or relies on outdated stereotypes, such as associating it primarily with criminal activity or environmental concerns, the BBC has skewed public understanding and stifled informed discourse.
The BBC’s influence as a trusted news outlet amplifies the damage: its narratives have historically shaped opinions that deter adoption, investment, and innovation in a technology that could revolutionise financial inclusion, decentralised systems, and economic sovereignty.
This is particularly harmful given Bitcoin’s surged value, reaching a record high of around $109,000, and when global leaders are increasingly recognising its strategic importance, such as the US establishing a Strategic Bitcoin Reserve.
By obscuring Bitcoin's potential to empower individuals and challenge traditional financial systems, the BBC has delayed societal benefits and reinforced a status quo favouring established institutions over technological progress and freedom.
People deserve transparency. The exemption should be scrapped, but then again, so should the BBC.

The Motley Fool just endorsed XRP, saying:
“As an investor, it makes perfect sense to buy and hold both of these assets.”
But does it? Even they admit XRP and Bitcoin are very different. One is a censorship-resistant protocol, the other controlled by a company. One is sound money, the other a “zombie coin” (Forbes).
XRP has been tied up in SEC lawsuits, its price driven by speculation, and its supply controlled by Ripple.
On the other hand, Bitcoin is the only truly sound, permissionless monetary network.

In June 2023, I published "Why I believe the Bank of England’s CBDC consultation amounts to a national scandal", highlighting concerns over transparency and control.
Since then, the Bank of England has promised legislation to protect privacy and maintain access to cash. But officials are now expressing doubts about launching Britcoin before 2030, citing privacy concerns, costs, and public apprehension about government control over finances.
As the House of Lords' Economic Affairs Committee aptly described, CBDCs are "a solution in search of a problem," potentially costing taxpayers significantly without clear benefits.
To date, there have been no successful CBDC launches when measured by adoption. Every attempt so far has failed to gain meaningful traction. So why are we doing this?
Also, the choice of the name Britcoin is certainly interesting. Whether intentional or not, it risks confusing a state-controlled currency with Bitcoin, which operates outside government control.

At 11:53 AM on today (10 January 2024), I received a response from the Executive Complaints Unit, confirming this was their final decision.
Then, just 13 minutes later, at 12:06 PM, another email from the BBC stated that they couldn’t respond to my complaint within their normal timeframe and it might take an additional 20 working days.

Russian companies are now using locally mined Bitcoin for international trade to bypass sanctions.
Finance Minister Anton Siluanov stated, “Such transactions are already occurring. We believe they should be expanded and developed further. I am confident this will happen next year.”

BBC Stage 2 ECU Complaint Submitted (Ref: CAS-7858989-Z7B7B5):
Following the email on 4 December 2024 confirming that Stage 1 of the BBC complaints process had concluded, I began the Stage 2 ECU escalation on 12 December 2024.
12 December 24: The link provided on 4 December 2024 to escalate the complaint to stage 2 was broken. Called 0370 010 0222 for assistance and was told a new link would be issued.
16 December 24: Received a working link. BBC guidance states a 1,000-word limit, but the form only allows 5,000 characters—requiring heavy condensing of the complaint. The submission failed twice due to errors but succeeded on the third attempt.
The ECU aims to respond within 20 working days (or 35 working days for more complex cases, which this may fall into).

Another soul-crushing response from the BBC. After a year, they continue to ignore all the key points raised:
- Failed to disclose Alex DeVries' conflict of interest as a Dutch central banker.
- Ignored that his research was debunked at the time of publication.
- Provided no evidence of their own fact-checking.
Instead, they cited other outlets who published the same misinformation.
Stage 1 has officially concluded. This is the end of the road with BBC Complaints. I now have 20 days to escalate the complaint to the Executive Complaints Unit—on to Stage 2.

If you built a custom wallet and act as your own provider, CARF likely wouldn’t apply to you directly. CARF targets Reporting Crypto-Asset Service Providers, such as exchanges and third-party wallet providers, not individuals managing their own wallets.
However, any interaction with a CARF-covered entity (e.g., sending funds to an exchange) would still be reported by that entity. You may still be required to self-report your transactions and holdings to comply with tax laws in your country.
While CARF doesn’t currently target self-hosted wallets, I believe regulators could look to close gaps.
