Last Notes npub1hz25p7fm9aem2qdhunzw6jfn9kra4vqx0ddvd83nncqwrfu4pnqsysxhm6 Y⃒̸̷̝̜̙ͥͥͥngmar My attempt at capturing some free phosphate fertilizer: Throw grass clippings under the storks nest and let them poop on it all summer. When the storks leave, collect the enriched clippings and throw them on top of the compost heap. Alternatively we could just plant root veggies under there 🤔 They poop a lot, being forced to grow from egg to adult in just a few months and they learn how to do it over the side of the nest early on. Unless its storming it all lands in a 3m radius :) #Stork #Nest #Compost #Garden #Homestead #Fertilizer #Free https://f2.tchncs.de/media_attachments/files/117/202/946/701/308/457/original/08acff68ea555038.jpg npub1hz25p7fm9aem2qdhunzw6jfn9kra4vqx0ddvd83nncqwrfu4pnqsysxhm6 Y⃒̸̷̝̜̙ͥͥͥngmar now? npub1hz25p7fm9aem2qdhunzw6jfn9kra4vqx0ddvd83nncqwrfu4pnqsysxhm6 Y⃒̸̷̝̜̙ͥͥͥngmar Solved the mystery of why there was a huge pile of empty pine cones below one linden tree when the snow melted. I assumed squirrels or some other forest creature, but yesterday a friend suggested it was the woodpeckers work, who uses holes in the tree as cone holder and then pecks out the seeds. So I looked up and indeed found two spots where cones were still stuck, one in a hole and one between trunk and a branch. Clever birds. No hands but know how to utilize their environment :) #Birds #Woodpecker #Tree #Homestead #Pinecone #TIL https://f2.tchncs.de/media_attachments/files/116/540/051/175/590/601/original/fa2ac9acbe31859e.jpg https://f2.tchncs.de/media_attachments/files/116/540/051/182/453/140/original/4cbeb82701a52451.jpg npub1hz25p7fm9aem2qdhunzw6jfn9kra4vqx0ddvd83nncqwrfu4pnqsysxhm6 Y⃒̸̷̝̜̙ͥͥͥngmar That escalated quickly. npub1hz25p7fm9aem2qdhunzw6jfn9kra4vqx0ddvd83nncqwrfu4pnqsysxhm6 Y⃒̸̷̝̜̙ͥͥͥngmar Look who's back from winter holidays. Welcome back! Time to work! Fix up that nest, mow the grass that's grown there since you left, chase off contenders and bring some order* to the local birdlife. I think it might be the same one as last year. They do not always return to the same nest, but this one is utterly used to me working in the yard and making fake clapper sounds with my tongue, which last year took some time. It must be a male, because stork males always return first to do the work of rebuilding the nest. * Nothing larger than a starling dares venture near an occupied stork nest, even crows only yell insults from a safe distance. #Stork #StorkNest #Wildlife #Bird #BirdsOfMastodon #Fedibird https://f2.tchncs.de/media_attachments/files/116/283/525/884/202/478/original/5b0d8a472e1084a6.jpg npub1hz25p7fm9aem2qdhunzw6jfn9kra4vqx0ddvd83nncqwrfu4pnqsysxhm6 Y⃒̸̷̝̜̙ͥͥͥngmar Ohh, a biodigester. Those are used to treat blackwater around here when you're not on the municipial sewage grid. Quite a large expense though for some greywater cleanup. The plants didn't mind the washing machine water by the way, everything grew great, just the stink when watering with it was really bad. And if you pumped it from the cistern to the garden barrel it would flip in one day in summer 😆 So had to empty it every time. npub1hz25p7fm9aem2qdhunzw6jfn9kra4vqx0ddvd83nncqwrfu4pnqsysxhm6 Y⃒̸̷̝̜̙ͥͥͥngmar What's the treatment you suggest? Now we can replant, but sensibly. I want a little evergreen jungle there with a path curving from the door to the front gate and carport. I've been to the forest and scouted a few spruce saplings that should thrive there, as the two I moved last year already do. Also before throwing it all in the chipper, I picked out a few more nice pieces of the Colorado spruce, dipped them into rooting hormone and jammed them into flowerpots to root over winter (indoors). I did that last year too and some of them have indeed grown roots. There were also some pine cuttings but those aren't doing nearly as well. #Homestead #Forestry #Garden #Gardening npub1hz25p7fm9aem2qdhunzw6jfn9kra4vqx0ddvd83nncqwrfu4pnqsysxhm6 Y⃒̸̷̝̜̙ͥͥͥngmar Badger eating frozen apples hidden under the snow in our garden. #Trailcam #Wildlife #Animal #Badger #Night #Apple #Garden #Homestead https://f2.tchncs.de/media_attachments/files/115/668/584/166/139/191/original/90a529acea916c7f.mp4 npub1hz25p7fm9aem2qdhunzw6jfn9kra4vqx0ddvd83nncqwrfu4pnqsysxhm6 Y⃒̸̷̝̜̙ͥͥͥngmar Hacking together a quick & dirty log hauling thing from this axle with one wheel and one wheel with cut off axle I found in the junk piles a while ago. Offered the top 2m as xmas tree to the neighbours, if they want. Looks nice with the cones on and smells good. Since I had the saw out, two small thorny fuckers that were growing through a bunch of steel junk preventing cleanup went down as well, and a creeper infested maple that popped up in between two sheds, as maples do. Bunch of branch piles to chip and that's it with the felling in the garden. This is what happens when you plant cute little trees without thinking about how big they will get. These do not require a permit because they're not on the list of protected species. Not native and immigrants always have fewer rights :blobcatthink: Very close to the house, but an easy job as it was leaning in the right direction for once. Lots of work debranching! I got a straight log for sawmilling later, a lot of xmas decorations to give away and a tiny bit of firewood, but not for the house due to high resin content. #Homestead #Forestry #Tree #DIY #Sawmilling https://f2.tchncs.de/media_attachments/files/115/554/048/997/943/668/original/58b6ca24098fe0e0.jpg https://f2.tchncs.de/media_attachments/files/115/554/049/056/643/680/original/bd254c50c32d2881.jpg https://f2.tchncs.de/media_attachments/files/115/554/049/032/956/551/original/79f03c6c7776fa96.jpg npub1hz25p7fm9aem2qdhunzw6jfn9kra4vqx0ddvd83nncqwrfu4pnqsysxhm6 Y⃒̸̷̝̜̙ͥͥͥngmar Huh, as someone who speaks a bit of Italian but almost no French, I thought it was closer to Italian. The manual says no, but the manual is wrong about many things, including how to assemble the machine 😆 Worked really well, although the leaves must be dry. Set mowing height high so the grass isn't bothered and simply drive over, vacuuming up the leaves and slightly chopping them. I only did the area where we walk alot, because they get quite slippery in the rain. Dropped one load in the little kitchen compost and the rest as piles under some trees in the orchard further away where they can stay until spring. Actually well late for it. After planting potatoes this year and then digging them up and bending over an extra 8192 times to pick out all the steel, plastic, bricks, concrete and rocks, it's a LOT better this year. Hit only one brick. Last year it was all bumps! Also went and leveled some of the mess under the tree from the failed experiment in agroforestry and then did a surface pass through the orchard to break up the shallow Virginia creeper roots, which worked wonderfully - without bothering the deep apple tree roots at all. As usual, a polite reminder: Don't fucking #Plasticulture, motherfuckers. Cutting off all the dead branches, I found rot in only two and not further down. Not all the fruits were fungus infected either. So I cleaned it all up and we'll see if it sprouts back next year or not and with or without infection. Apple trees can sprout back from a stump, so why not. Before some eager beaver chimes in with unqualified safety advice, this is an insulated span of power line. Else there would already be trouble 😁 Still needs freeing up, and carefully. The tree is some weird kind of mini yellow plums that is super popular with animals so it went from "yuck too sour" to "oops all gone" over night. Something is even hoarding the stones (seeds) and chewing them open. I thought plum seeds were full of cyanide 🤷 #Pruning #Homestead #Overgrown #Tree #Plum #Gardening https://f2.tchncs.de/media_attachments/files/115/230/849/270/541/573/original/b6fdc71fa112f3f8.jpg npub1hz25p7fm9aem2qdhunzw6jfn9kra4vqx0ddvd83nncqwrfu4pnqsysxhm6 Y⃒̸̷̝̜̙ͥͥͥngmar The polar opposite, this tree is in rather poor health. I'll probably just fell it, I don't think there is anything worth saving here, it's likely as rotten inside as it is outside due to its severe wounds. That bark-less branch stump there is unfortunately typical of how old folk here pruned their trees. It's really bad. The tree cannot heal this and parasites, fungi and whatnot will attack it until it gets too sick. This one does bear some sick apples and fungus infected leaves. It's not completely dead but clearly dying. #Pruning #Wrong #Apple #Tree #Gardening #Homestead https://f2.tchncs.de/media_attachments/files/115/226/510/502/830/849/original/f73f6ec766c85f2c.jpg https://f2.tchncs.de/media_attachments/files/115/226/510/513/000/781/original/477b2feab5aa1a2e.jpg npub1hz25p7fm9aem2qdhunzw6jfn9kra4vqx0ddvd83nncqwrfu4pnqsysxhm6 Y⃒̸̷̝̜̙ͥͥͥngmar Pruning season begins. Let's get these overgrown apple trees under control. This one actually seems to have been pruned in recent years, but has grown these massive shoots to the moon since. I left a few to pick through in spring and brought down the rest. Don't need another 10m apple tree, one is enough. The weed cutting tool* I found in the barn works pretty well and no bending over required. Takes a bit of energy to hack through thick stuff with it, but for me that's a lot better than bending over all the time. Most of the no-dig potatoes have sprouted by now, much later but looking good. The early dig beds are already flowering, so we should have a sample soon. Since it's so wet, there's also big white mushrooms! I asked the local mushroom expert if they're edible and she said "dunno". 👍 * Similar to this, with a long wooden handle and more rust: https://www.maxgarten.de/sale/pendelhacke-alba-krapf-ohne-stiel-mit-rostfreiem-schneidblatt-11344-unkrauthacke #Potato #Gardening #Homestead #Snail https://f2.tchncs.de/media_attachments/files/114/669/441/273/179/314/original/c98d2c9332d14aba.jpg npub1hz25p7fm9aem2qdhunzw6jfn9kra4vqx0ddvd83nncqwrfu4pnqsysxhm6 Y⃒̸̷̝̜̙ͥͥͥngmar Milkshake (the horse) got a horn on a rubber band today. That actually made for a nice effect. Two pieces of salvaged wood, a bit of sawing, sanding and testing of that angle grinder carving disc I got a while ago. Finally slapped on some "deck oil" from an old can. Looks very #SalvagePunk! I enjoyed this quick & intentionally imperfect job. Ok, the wide bucket is a little large for the wheelbarrow, but it got full anyways! 😁 This simple compost pile worked a lot better than the fancy plastic composter in the garden (came with the property). Just not enough oxygen in that thing. Sadly the pile was full of dubious materials from the previous owners, so I'm not using it for food growing. I fished out most. Most of the fence posts pulled out easily, with a few exceptions. The fence itself however was ingrown like a bad toenail. I had to pull really hard and then clear a bunch of soil, roots and weeds off the bottom. A young maple (those really like to self-seed around here) and some thorny monstrosity that had incorporated several fence links got extracted, too.
