In the era this home was made, only 10% of residential buildings (including apartment buildings!) were built out of concrete, so this was a rarity here as well. The original owner must have been rich. It's the only reason this 50-year old home is still inhabitable. If it was built out wood like most other homes, it would have been an earthquake deathtrap and torn down.

My house is such a strong Faraday cage that even from the front yard 2 meters away from the house, the 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi network is not reachable (and the 5/6 GHz SSIDs are not even visible)

(I’m moving and that’s the day I’m having my Internet service transferred over - the net gets shut down in the AM at the old apartment and installed in the PM at my new house. Hopefully it should work within an hour of install but the ISP says that in rare cases NTT can take several days to actually complete the transfer)

BaroNet will be going down for scheduled maintenance 2 weeks from now (Sep 4). The outage will start from around 10 AM JST and is planned to remain for 6-8 hours, but may take up to 72 hours depending on upstream networks.
There will be no need to adjust your configuration as the static IP will remain.

Going through Facebooks “I’m hacked” or “account restore” links, they don’t accept the email or phone numbers that were associated with the account before the hack. So WTH are they good for? And WTF does the “it wasn’t me” link in the email do if it doesn’t revert the action the hacker did?

So I guess the only thing she can do now is remove all her friends so they won’t get spammed and change her name to HACKED IGNOREME or something?

My wife’s Facebook account got taken over. She got an email from “facebookmail . com” (which is apparently, the legit Facebook domain, not phishing) saying her phone number had been removed the account.
After checking it wasn’t a phishing mail, we click the “this wasn’t me” link, go through the restore procedure, and she’s logged back into Facebook in the account.
But the password and email has been changed, and the phone number is not restored, so the hacker is still in control.

Although working on this increases the urgency for me to finally get around to fixing one of my dead 68k Macs so I have some native machine to test this on System 7 and over LocalTalk - the AppleTalk APIs have things that each app needs to manually tune for how long you wait for replies and retry, with no useful guidance from the documentation, so what is fast on my G4 with Gigabit might miss replies on an LC III over LocalTalk…

It’s really crazy, haha!
The biggest speed up is just that the XCMD I had would just scan one zone at a time, whereas in the native code I’m scanning every zone at once!
But even after that when I’m grouping up entities into nodes… not doing everything with massive strings you’re constantly looping over by line and itemDelimiter is crazy fast… the node grouping code right now is really naive (just a full linear scan over and over again) and yet on this G4 it’s just instant

So after finally getting my framework for making tools for classic Mac OS in a usable state last weekend, this weekend my project was to start getting familiar with the AppleTalk APIs.
I'm now scanning all of #GlobalTalk in 8 seconds flat!
A wee bit faster than the HyperCard XCMD setup I was using for TalkCrawler earlier this year...

The label at HARD OFF said the LED turned on when powered on, but I was getting zero life. No LED, no fanspin.
First look at the PSU... Well that's a problem.
It was easy enough to unscrew the PSU and re-seat the pin connector. It didn't fix the problem.
When I had the PSU open I also beeped out this fuse which was fine.

I was walking back from the mall and figured it couldn’t hurt to drop in to HARD OFF on the way back.
Wandering through the Junk PC aisle, I had a double-take, what is that purple beauty on the bottom shelf?
A SiliconGraphics O2? In MY rural Japanese city? How did that get here? At $60 I could not leave it there!
Lugging it home in the 31+C heat, squeezing in on the tram and dashing through the rain was a slog but I got it safely back home!

Yeah they’re not kidding when they call it a full renovation!
Our flat rate renovation plan lets you freely re-arrange any walls you want (but since our house is concrete most structures are load-bearing and can’t be deleted) so we’re changing the floor plan quite a bit - here’s a before and after of what we’re planning.
The green walls in the after schematic are new walls they’re building. It also involves completely moving the kitchen from the back to the front of the house!

I had one of those as a hand-me down as a kid! I still viscerally remember the beep it made when you scan too fast. And trying to figure out how to pronounce the name of the company that made the OCR software it came with.
I definitely have a few wobbly scans I made with it still lying around somewhere

I think one difference is from North America is that here there’s no such thing as a “credit score” number that lenders can point to, every lender has to make an individual assessment of your creditworthiness based on their own criteria.
While this slows down anything related to credit, it also means you’re not beholden to the algos of one of 3 major companies and have more diversity of credit options.

My experience with bureaucracy in Japan is that while they like to move through a lot of paper, they’re still good at working around any blocks you run into so you don’t get stopped in kafkaesque situations. And stuff like immigration can be really lenient with fuckups as long as you don’t show ill intent.

So we found the house in the middle of Jan, made preliminary bank loan applications in the beginning of Feb. The realtor said I had being self-employed and a foreigner working against me. A week later the banks called me to ask some questions and kind of softly test my Japanese language skills (they don’t want people signing a contract in a language they can’t read). After an agonizing wait, I was approved by both banks I applied to. (4/11)

The house was built in 1973, which is super old for a Japanese house. Typically, you do not want to live in a house from before 1981 (or to a lesser extent before 2001) since they are deathtraps in an earthquake. The difference is this house is not wooden, it’s reinforced concrete. At the time it was built, only 10% of homes in Japan were concrete, so whoever originally built it really splashed out! (2/11)

It was renovated 25 years ago, but the interior was still very dated and not suited to us (tatami flooring, futon closets, 180cm tall doorways), so we went for a flat-rate full renovation plan from the realtor, they strip the house down to the “bones”, and put in all new interior/exterior/kitchen/bath/WC/plumbing/wiring, dual-pane windows and full freedom to re-arrange (non-load-bearing) walls. So in the end we’ll get what appears to be a brand-new house. (3/11)

What the heck, it’s now a legal fact. I actually own a tiny little portion of Japan, and the house sat on top of it!! If you asked me in December of last year, I would not have believed it…

My first CD burner was a hand-me-down from my uncle. It was broken so I got to fix it, some plastic peg that lifts up the disc from the tray had cracked. I glued on a replacement but it was never quite aligned right ever again, it could only burn the first 300 MB of a disc reliably before it lost focus, so all my burns from that era were limited to 300 MB of data

The city I live in in Japan, a few years before I came here someone had the bright idea to rip up all the asphalt in the tram tracks and plant grass there instead.
Looking at photos from before they did that, it looks so *dreary*. Now there’s this strip of green through everything. These little things matter so much!
They even had to convert an old tram to add a huge water tank and be a watering machine for the grass. edit: apparently they also built a lawnmower

I am now controlling my versions like it's 1997!
I'm using the CWProjector plugin for CodeWarrior to connect to MPW SourceServer, working against a Projector project on an AppleShare share, so I can work from either my PowerMac G4 or my PowerBook G3 depending on where I want to work!

I’ve never even tried Projector before, checking the web I’m not finding any information on how it works, does it just work with regular volumes and lock files? It doesn’t sound like it has any kind of central server.

- Add missing define for #geneva font family ID
- Remove MPW-specific boilerplate (_DataInit, QDGlobals)
- Ditch Rez file in favor of a ResEdit file
The Boolean and function pointer stuff I thought I had problems with in the first post were red herrings to other problems with my function prototypes/externs and how I was putting them in header files. Both Booleans and function pointers work exactly the same as in MPW!

In the end this is what I had to do:
- Remove all the Mac Toolbox header includes, CodeWarrior does it automagically
- Remove the jank “include all C files directly in the main file" method I used to avoid having to learn MPW Make. CW projects are automatic
- Add missing function prototypes (that MPW didn't need) and externs that I now need when it's not all one postprocessed file
- Fix that \r and \n are reversed in MPW
- Rename old "short" Toolbox calls to newer "long" ones… (1/2)

I did a quick web search to see if anyone had discussed the history of this MPW feature, but instead found a Stack Overflow thread with everyone confidently incorrecting each other that it's impossible and never happened, so those are the "facts" your LLMs are going to be trained on.

And it’s fixed!
The problem was due to MPW having a backwards interpretation of \n and \r that I was using, and CodeWarrior uses the standard one! They even have an option in the compiler settings to use the MPW mode.

An excuse to try out the CodeWarrior debugger! This thing looks awesome!
From this I can see that the problem seems to be that the request isn’t being built/sent properly and the server is sending a 400 Bad Request error, which is why it can’t find a result and fails.

Files seem to work fine but it doesn’t like the HTTP parsing code - loading a URL results in this error (that it can’t find the end of the HTTP headers)

So in my process of porting my MPW C program to CodeWarrior I'm now past the easy part of "need to make missing header files and rename old function calls" and into the need-to-read-a-book parts of "C doesn't have a concept of booleans so what does this compiler expect" and how to make pointers to function kind of stuff...

Yeah I left some debug code in (to limit it to the one zone that had the LQ for rapid testing), released it, then left home and on the way to the train realized exactly what I had done so I never announced it 🙈 I was hoping nobody noticed 1.3.1 since it was only out for 3 hours!!

Right now is an extremely stressful and uncertain period of my life, and #MARCHintosh has meant so much to keep me sane right now I don't have the words to express it. I truly mean it when I thank everyone who just has tried out something I built for #GlobalTalk, left a message or printout, sent me mail(!!!) or even just liked one of my toots. My #GlobalTalk Zone will stay online year round as before.
I'll leave the ImageWriter on for another week I guess before shutting it off, if the AsanteTalk lasts that long.
If the new networking means the GlobalTalk Chat server is less CPU-intensive I'll move it to Blackbird to keep it running, otherwise that will go offline with the ImageWriter when I reclaim that space. (4/5)

Then there was the scavenger hunt which come out of the left field, a random idea I had one night and slapped together in a day but turned out to be really fun to watch people struggle with!
I have a growing list of ideas for things I want to built for GlobalTalk, March felt far too short!

My stated goals were
1. Release TalkCrawler
2. Rewrite the networking in GlobalTalk Chat
3. Recap a IIvi/IIcx to replace my PB540 as router
An unstated goal was
4. To get a printer on #GlobalTalk
I completed 1 in time for March 1, and 2 by the middle of the month, 2 felt like redemption for something that felt like failure last year. Never had the time/desk space for 3, but maybe that'll be a good post-March project? #mb… (1/5)

4 was a mess with several false starts (Brother laser with bad rollers, crumbling LW300, rusting IW), and even my backup plan of getting the first Fax machine on GlobalTalk being a failure (more on that later), but eventually I got a working ImageWriter first using PortShare and then splurged on an ImageScribbler card and that was extremely fulfilling to start receiving printouts from all around the world! It looks like my ImageWriter has been continuing its double-spacing shenanigans for these next prints from @npub1xv5…v634 and @npub14wk…508e . I wonder if it’s a setting left over in memory on the IW from @npub1kmd…3fq6 's ASCII art? I’ve power-cycled so everyone please try to re-print these 🙇

I guess it’s too late now, but a pro tip is to press command-M to bring up the message box and then type
print bg fld “machines”
And it will print out the contents of the machine list without having to take screenshots etc

I was actually misinterpreting what the standard ImageWriter driver was doing - Print Shop Pro Deluxe has a built-in halftoning algorithm that works quite well, the problem is what is actually happening is that it's just plain old skipping the first RandomInt(1,4) pages of the printout and starting halfway in - my first attempt it just skipped the first page which had a graphic on it, but on my second try it started halfway into the text. Super weird!!

Trying to print a banner using Print Shop Pro Deluxe 1.1.1 and MacPalette II but having issues...
No matter if I choose portrait or landscape or no gaps between pages in Page Setup, it prints each page in portrait, meaning it's not actually a continuous banner.
Using the standard ImageWriter driver it works fine, but half the graphics are missing due to the lack of proper half-toning (and I won't be able to do color when I get that ribbon fixed)
Has anyone gotten this working?

Yeah I’ve had nginx on my “I should learn and switch to this” list for 15 years now but everything is still too easy to do with Apache. The last time I tried to switch there was something about updating with letsencrypt/certbot or something that made things unreasonably complicated and I gave up and went back to Apache

#GlobalTalk chat 0.9 is out on BaroNet:Blackbird now!
I would number it 1.0 from a features/UI point of view but I want more people to test it and find the rough edges before I do that.
Last year I gave up on developing it further due to the horrible lag/freezes caused by the built-in networking support in HyperCard I was using, but with the new XCMD networking I’m feeling more confident so I’ve finished polishing it up!
Will soon disable support for 0.2 clients on the server.

Wasn't there some trick on Macs that came with OS X but also ran OS 9 where if you used that one d-link Bluetooth dongle that everyone had you could pair a keyboard/mouse in OS X and then reboot into OS 9 and it would magically work?
