@nprofile…25dv For what it's worth @nprofile…25dv, you and @nprofile…7s4z have been excellent stewards of fosstodon.org the entire time I've been here. I have greatly appreciated your approach to maintaining this instance (otherwise I wouldn't be a Fosstodon supporter!).
I am sorry you are leaving fosstodon, and I would not be surprised if @nprofile…7s4z does the same. But I am sad that you feel that it's all been bad for the past several years.
And I am sad that fosstodon will shut down. 😦

2025-04-28 11:41:30 GMT

The worst part about people basically driving @nprofile…25dv and @nprofile…7s4z to consider shutting down fosstodon is that since Mastodon's account migration facilities are garbage, I will actually *lose* my historical presence on the fediverse if they shut down.
The fediverse seems to be a meaner place than what it replaced. And that's a shame.

@nprofile…25dv And with @nprofile…05jc 42 released just yesterday, looks like things are lining up nicely for you!
(I don't know if you're a KDE user, but Fedora KDE is now a full-blown Edition this cycle, on the same tier as GNOME! As one of the Fedora KDE developers and an enthusiastic user, I'm very excited!)

@nprofile…h9qy @nprofile…czc2 @nprofile…thz6 It is not *not* supported. It is UEFI, but the ACPI is broken. You still need to do DeviceTree trickery, which makes scaling up to more devices really difficult.

- reply

@nprofile…h9qy @nprofile…czc2 @nprofile…thz6 There is no potential for Snapdragon X as long as it has broken UEFI and you are locked out of CPU features because you're not Windows (like hardware accelerated virtualization).

@nprofile…0s9k @nprofile…dt3q There is zero reason to push an image *period* that isn't connected to published content. Don't even push it to an alternative tag. It's just a bad idea all around.

2025-02-22 17:54:37 GMT

- reply

@nprofile…0s9k @nprofile…dt3q Because it doesn't make sense to do that. Doing so would make it difficult to do testing of artifacts on content intended for release. What probably needs to happen is that those containers need to not be published until the push to the mirrors instead.

@nprofile…w4zq Yes, I did. I'm specifically responding that it's a bad idea to eliminate this from user-facing aspects of the project, product, and services.

2025-02-14 06:44:40 GMT

- reply

@nprofile…w4zq My issue with this is that by "professionalizing" it like this, you've essentially gutted any visibility of the community that the project actually *is*.
Admittedly, I'm not a real GNOME person even though I've contributed a little bit to GNOME, but I used to be a heavy GNOME user. In general, I think giving up the "personality" of projects and communities leads to strictly worse products and services.

@nprofile…qfqs @nprofile…e7g7 We know this isn't true though: the Linux kernel project isn't that welcoming to volunteers and hobbyist developers anymore. The overwhelming majority of Linux kernel hackers are gainfully employed at large companies who force specific priorities. Many of those folks have forgotten what it's like to *be* a hobbyist hacker or work on community projects anymore.

2023-12-14 03:25:31 GMT

I recently got the full brunt of someone complaining at me for RHEL RPM packaging "breaking" things for portability of an RPM to FreeBSD. But that led to a question: is there any platform evolution work going on in the BSD camps, such as improvements to FHS, systems/software management, hardware support, etc.? The few times I've poked at some BSDs, it seemed like nothing ever happens...
But perhaps that's just ignorance. Any BSD folks following me know if there's such stuff done in their camps?

@npub1cm7…32y8 That would mean bug reporting would also need to be directed to a central system rather than having it fly all over mailing lists. Because the signal to noise ratio is way too low in the mailing lists.

@npub1tjg…gye3 @npub12lc…e4yu Tying your open source contribution accounts to corporate accounts is a great way to get unexpectedly locked out when you suddenly aren't employed there anymore.
I have always refused to use my corporate email address as my primary email address for open source work precisely because of that. Sometimes I've done contributions on behalf of an employer, and then those contributions will have a corporate email attached. But my actual account? No way.

@npub1h8r…e2tc @npub18yv…xxyn It's just like Mongo years ago, they really looked at OSS as a way to build a "freemium" business. Turns out, that doesn't usually work.

2023-07-11 00:04:22 GMT

- reply

@npub18yv…xxyn And that is totally fair. My personal philosophy around open source is that you either contribute with time+effort or with money.
For a lot of projects that I use that I'm not skilled in, I donate/subscribe/etc. to pay them to do the good work. Where I *am* skilled, I try to help out meaningfully with code, bug reports, packaging work, etc.
You can always do a mix of both, too. It's up to you to figure out what you want to do there.

2023-07-10 23:57:50 GMT

- reply

@npub18yv…xxyn This is not about Red Hat. This is about you and your willingness to help sustain the things you depend on.
At the end of the day, *your* choices are what keep the things *you* use alive.
For me, I've *personally* made it a point to try to figure out how to contribute to every project *I* depend on. And with that mindset, I *always* find a way.
I wish more people did the same. Maybe then things wouldn't be so difficult like they are now for many OSS projects.

2023-07-10 23:50:40 GMT

@npub18yv…xxyn Here's the thing. When using @npub155e…f8ex, the main point of value creation is when you participate in the project. Whether that's filing bugs/submitting fixes to #CentOSStream or contributing/supporting SIGs like the Hyperscale and Kmods SIGs, you are taking some *ownership* of the project to help make it sustainable.
This is also true in @npub1gl5…7hk0, it's just new to community users of the Enterprise Linux ecosystem.

@npub18yv…xxyn The CentOS Kmods SIG builds kmods for both RHEL and CentOS Stream kernels. So if you use the RHEL-targeted builds, it'll work on AlmaLinux.
