@nprofile…msgr I see no correlation. It's an Ubuntu core / Debian developer. Even if this was a random person who happens to develop with Rust, a programming language isn't a personality trait, culture, or organization. Anyone of any age, nationality, etc. can develop with Rust. And the same is true for any other language. So there's no commonality between Rust developers beyond using a language.

2025-11-02 00:49:04 GMT

- reply

@nprofile…msgr Why assume that this is a "Rust developer"? It's stated very clearly that this is a Debian/Ubuntu developer. People somehow forget that it isn't Rust developers who make these choices. It's always a decision made within by the current maintainers. A "Rust developer" doesn't get to decide how a maintainer runs their project, unless they themselves are the maintainer.

@nprofile…3p25 There seems to be some confusion. Neither Pop!_OS nor COSMIC modifies the packaging or configuration of other DEs.
Wayland also isn't a display server itself, but an IPC protocol—which doesn't specify a configuration mechanism outside of the protocol.
Each DE implements Wayland separately; and therefore behavior depends entirely on that DE's own Wayland implementation.
So only GNOME and COSMIC will support Wayland in 24.04. KDE did not get functional Wayland support until KDE6.

@nprofile…pga7 No, any software which links to it is by definition a derivative work, and must therefore comply with the requirement of being distributed under the same license.
So while it makes sense for open source applications to use the GPL, licenses like MIT/Apache-2.0 and MPL-2.0 are better for libraries. MIT is the standard because it is the closest legally-recognized equivalent to public domain. Typically dual-licensed with Apache-2.0 for protection against patent lawsuits.

@nprofile…nejv There is also a `cargo upgrade` command that can be used to apply similar operations for the Cargo.toml across all crates in your workspace. Use the verbose flag to get it to list which semver-incompatible libraries that it was unable to upgrade to. You may even use the --incompatible flag to force it to update to the latest version of everything.
But note that the exact version defined in the Cargo.toml will be the minimum requirement for projects that import it.

2025-03-21 15:08:30 GMT

- reply

@nprofile…nejv You can use `cargo update` to update dependencies in the lockfile to their latest semver-compatible releases. In addition to pulling the latest git commits from dependencies using git without a rev parameter specifying a commit hash. The lockfile should be included in your git repository for binary projects to ensure others are building with identical known-good libraries. Not needed to be included in git for libraries.

@nprofile…tfka You did not provide any examples to explain in this context. The uutils project adds nothing to the discussion here that wasn't already there. If a hardware device intends not to be modified or inspected, you aren't going to find a coreutils suite installed on it at all. Open or otherwise. If you find uutils on the system, you have free reign to whole GNU coreutils spec.

@nprofile…hxuh Part of the job of a non-profit organization is to convince corporations to donate to their cause. A non-profit organization without a source of funding cannot sustain itself. For the Rust Foundation, that would be convincing companies to adopt Rust, and working with them to fund developments or programs related to Rust. So it should not be surprising that large companies using Rust are also sponsoring the Rust Foundation.

2025-03-17 12:22:21 GMT

- reply

@nprofile…hxuh You must be new to open source, and have only recently learned about Rust and non-profit organizations. Rust was created and maintained exclusively by Mozilla for more than 10 years prior to the Rust Foundation being established. Every major open source organization without a legal entity forms a Foundation to manage all of the legal and financial needs of the project. It is their purpose to finance website infrastructure, organize events, conferences, etc.

2025-03-16 18:27:32 GMT

@nprofile…tfka No, abandonment is the only issue. Affecting all software regardless of license. I've already watched 10 years worth of software development in Rust with libraries using the MIT license. I can't think of any instance where something was closed and erased, but plenty where a crate was abandoned and then forked with a new maintainer. The Crates repository archives every release of a crate uploaded to it, and you can't remove something once it's published.

@nprofile…tfka How much contributions do hardware vendors give to LLVM and Mesa? They, too, are MIT-licensed. How much contributions do software vendors give to LLVM and Rust? Also MIT-licensed. If there's a will, there's a way, but we forget that the open source movement already won the battle, and we have the better platform that everyone wants to be a part of. So let's focus on that instead of trying to tear down people for using a MIT license.

@nprofile…ne93 The Google issue is more of a problem with unregulated capitalism. They could output uutils in a month if they wanted to. That said, Google has contributed a lot of open source software in the recent past, so it's not entirely black and white.
Recently, they open sourced Fuchsia, and they are very active in the Coreboot community. For Rust by itself, they have open sourced 86 crates and applications. So people there do recognize the importance of being part of the open source.

2025-03-16 16:52:46 GMT

- reply

@nprofile…tfka Closing a copy of software does not close the software itself. Ubuntu and Fedora aren't going to suddenly start shipping a closed source coreutils suite just because it exists, are they? Are you suddenly going to use one because that option becomes available? People will use and contribute to uutils regardless.
As for hardware manufacturers, I can't think of a single instance where they shipped a closed source coreutils. They either ship busybox, BSD coreutils, or nothing at all.

2025-03-16 16:40:00 GMT

@nprofile…spn0 That's a rather accusatory tone you're using. I simply don't want to shame countries if I have no need to, but there are countries like this.
North Korea, for example, since that's less of a hot topic. Copyright law here is only enforced where the KCC is the copyright holder. Good luck suing the KCC when they violate US/EU copyright law themselves. They are very lenient with copyright infringement in regards to foreign copyrights.

2025-03-16 16:06:28 GMT

- reply

@nprofile…ne93 For that specific context, yes. Though it is sometimes the case that there is a policy for internal audits that errs on the side of caution here.
These days virtually everything is software-as-a-service and bundled with an Electron web app, so the original intent of GPL has been sidestepped to some degree, unless you are using AGPL.

2025-03-16 15:54:17 GMT

- reply

@nprofile…spn0 Copyright law is not enforced equally across the world. The country has to acknowledge and enforce copyright law. I won't name names here, but there are regions that do not, which makes software licenses more of a suggestion than a requirement in those regions.

2025-03-16 15:45:48 GMT

- reply

@nprofile…spn0 If a country allowed you to do that, then the license would not matter either way. There are some countries where the GPL is effectively null and void.

2025-03-16 15:42:38 GMT

- reply

@nprofile…ne93 Only if that copyleft license is the MPL-2.0 license. The GPL has a viral licensing clause which requires any software linking to it to also be licensed as GPL.

2025-03-16 15:40:51 GMT

- reply

@nprofile…tfka You need to read the whole comment chain. Though even as I said in this one alone, uutils is not the only implementation of coreutils. BSD Coreutils and many others already existed long before Rust existed. Equally easy to clone.
You cannot close an open source project. The open source license ensures that it is open source for all perpetuity. You cannot force the Rust uutils to close, nor can you force any forks of that repository to close.

2025-03-16 15:35:16 GMT

- reply

There have been several instances over the last 10 years where the uutils crate developed some useful abstractions and then decided to pull it out into its own crate as it matured. So because the uutils project had a MIT license, they were able to pull code from uutils and release it as a crate under the same license. That way everyone across the whole Rust ecosystem can use the library without needing to relicense their software.

2025-03-16 15:29:48 GMT

- reply

By using the MIT license, you grant equal access to all software developers using Rust. If a BSD developer wants to import a library with a MIT license, they can. If I want to import a MIT library into a MPL-2.0 library, I can. If a developer working for a small company wants to import it for use in their inventory system or other backend service, they can.

2025-03-16 15:26:17 GMT

- reply

I see a lot of questions asking why #uutils would use MIT instead of GPL if the license does not matter. This requires some understanding of the pros and cons of different open source licenses; the history of the open source Rust ecosystem; and the uutils project itself.
Software written in Rust is very distributed in nature because of Cargo and the Crates repository. It is very common to pull small abstractions of a project and release them as an open source library for all developers to use.

2025-03-16 15:20:16 GMT

The drama over the #RustLang #uutils project using the MIT license instead of GPL is absurd. Some are making the assumption that GNU coreutils was the original implementation of coreutils—it isn't—and therefore uutils should have been GPL. Or that uutils is the first non-GPL coreutils implementation—it isn't—and will be the target of EEE (hyperbolic fiction). Software licenses cannot be retroactively revoked, nor can the original or any other repository fork be retroactively closed.

@nprofile…4kpq Only indirectly from having more people writing code in Rust. This is more for the benefit of overall system security and performance than to COSMIC or any other desktop environment.
I've been expecting this to happen since the moment Rust 1.0 released and I saw how active the uutils project was. Especially given how prevalent CVEs have been in recent years. When sudo-rs passed a security audit in 2023, I was sure we'd be seeing this once distributions get comfier shipping Rust.

@nprofile…3eyn Within the last 10 years I've been involved with open source and Rust, this complaint has always been overly-exaggerated. @nprofile…rc54 Rarely need to use a debugger. Usually the tracing crate is good enough to generate a formatted log to inspect state at runtime. Sometimes it's useful to add a colorful stack trace. Adding unit tests with the cargo test feature is also pretty useful to checking if a previously-known bad input is handled correctly. The best case scenario is when a problem can be expressed with the type system to get the compiler to validate it at compile time.

@npub13w6…479m Yes, and there are multiple ways to achieve this. Using only the standard library, you can use a Rc'd RefCell, which requires a runtime borrow check on each access.
With the qcell crate, you can use Rc'd QCell/TCell/LCell, based on GhostCell, to achieve the same affect with compile-time borrow checks.
Or you could use generational indices like in the doubly-linked list example for the slotmap crate.
There's also some graph crates like petgraph.
