Let’s do what reparations advocates don’t do: be fair and put British involvement in proportion. In 1804, there were an estimated 45million chattel slaves around the world, of which the British share in the West Indies was just over one per cent. Of a total of at least 41million African slaves bought and transported across the Atlantic, the Sahara and the Indian Ocean, British merchants bought just under eight per cent, whereas Arabs were responsible for 37 per cent. But the original enslavers and traders of almost 100 per cent were other Africans. In the 1850s, the Fulani people of what is now northern Nigeria ran vast plantations employing four million slaves at any one time – more than the total transported to the Americas by the British in over 140 years.
What’s more, unlike any African nation, the British repented of their involvement in slave-trading and slavery, and in the early 1800s were among the first peoples in the history of the world to abolish them. They then used their imperial dominance to suppress the slave trade, not least in Africa itself. The Beninese historian, Abiola Félix Iroko, has written that, ‘When the slave trade was abolished [by the British], Africans were against abolition’. Indeed, according to Plaut, many of them are still against it. Today, the trade and the institution are alive and well in Mauritania, Mali, Niger, Sudan and Libya.

We need to talk about what happened last night in Portsmouth. What really happened. It is already being slurred as ‘far right’ by the newspapers and ‘thuggish’ by the government. But the truth, if anything, should be more alarming for the powers-that-be. Here was an organic, spur-of-the-moment uprising against illegal migration that could be a taste of things to come.
Word got out on Sunday that a dinghy, carrying 140 migrants, had arrived in Portsmouth’s Eastney Landing. Nationalist activist Danny Tommo (real name Daniel Thomas), an acolyte of Tommy Robinson, showed up. Tommo and a few others hopped into the water, refusing to move, while he called out over a livestream for ‘lads’ from across the country to descend on the ferry port and stop the buses, carrying the migrants, from leaving.
It worked. Hundreds arrived outside. On his livestream, Tommo shouted impromptu speeches at the police, berating them for their cowardice, and joked with port volunteers who brought him and his friends water and blankets. When his phone battery began to run low, he asked for anyone with a boat to deliver him a power bank. An older woman named Joy obliged, showing up on a kayak, leading a million memes to fly on right-wing social media. Tommo told the crowd to leaveat around 3am, after the police issued a dispersal order, insisting this was never about violence or getting arrested.

Ordinary people stepped up as reluctant, unpaid border guards while actual border guards rolled out the red carpet for a hundred blokes from heaven knows where. Everyday Brits stood vigil over our shores while the state threw those shores open to all-comers.

On the ground, the picture has been fascinating and worrying. Potatoes, which stop growing when it gets to 30˚C, have been tiny, and peas, according to my Norfolk neighbour, Jimmy Goodley, ‘are as hard as bullets’. In a normal year peas can be a big earner, but this year, rather than being hoovered up by Birds Eye, lots are only fit for animal feed. At the moment there is a dark irony in that lots of farmers, like Clive Bailye in Staffordshire, who organised the tractor protests last year outside Westminster, are wondering whether they should bother planting crops in the coming weeks. He’s lost money this year and he doesn’t fancy doing so again. That said, Bailye notes that his fields are still so dry he can’t plough up his land ahead of sowing next year’s crop anyway.

Today in “wankers who don’t know the road”:
There’s a stretch of fairly narrow road, on either side of a very narrow bridge which is itself on a hairpin bend. As I came into sight of it, I saw three cars on the other side of the narrow bit waiting for a car that was just clearing it going the same way as me, so I pulled in to let them have their turn at the bridge.
Then a car came flying up behind, passed me whilst beeping his horn, and caused a five minute wait while the (three) cars now negotiating the bridge had to reverse back out of his way.
I caught up with him a couple of miles further on and was stuck behind him for about the next eight miles.

Let’s be clear about the purpose of the veil. Islamic clergy argue that women and girls should wear hijabs and cover themselves to avoid attracting sexual attention from men. Generally, Islam asserts that women who do not wear hijabs are wholly responsible for being preyed on by men. Clearly, this is an alarming perspective when applied to seven-year-olds.
In Islam, children and young girls are not required to wear a hijab, burqa or niqab. Nevertheless, many girls are pressured into wearing these garments at a young age if they have the misfortune of belonging to a hardline or fundamentalist sect. The real question here is not what Islam says or doesn’t. The question is whether this is compatible with British values. Surely, we should all agree that pre-pubescent girls should not be required to express ‘sexual modesty’ by covering themselves.

The appeal of mythical misogyny to the political class is clear. It allows politicians to continuously blame the public for their supposedly misogynistic attitudes, rather than face up to the failings of the state, from the police to the judiciary. Politicians can ignore the actual victims of sexual violence, from the so-called grooming-gangs victims to those assaulted by asylum seekers, while standing in pseudo solidarity with an abstract mass of woman-kind.
Material misogyny does not allow for such slipperiness. Take the grooming-gangs scandal. Thousands of girls, some of whom were pre-pubsecent children, were systematically raped by organised gangs over decades, and the authorities, care workers and local councils were complicit in covering it up because they feared a race riot. There can be no question that heads must roll.
Or when women and children report being sexually assaulted in pubs, clubs, beaches, trains, graveyards, rooftops and parks by men who have no legal right to be in the country, it is clear that the time to ‘do better’ has long since passed.

The series of papers on graduate returns which the IFS have produced are superb - and hats off to them for their work. The finding that university was not worth it from an economic point of view for nearly a third of 2007 graduates is very striking. It should lead to a change in policy. In fact, it has already influenced the Conservative pledge to re-introduce number controls on higher education, and use the savings to fund more high quality apprenticeships and the abolition of of real interest rates on Plan 2 student loans.
But there are good reasons to think this may be an underestimate of the problem. The graduate premium had continued to decline since 2007, and as the IFS turn to later cohorts, they will need to figure out what to do with people with lower prior attainment who are now going to university. We can see that some of the apparent earnings premium is not higher hourly productivity, but more hours being worked - and that female graduates are more likely to be working more hours due to lower/later childbearing.
The further dramatic expansion of mass higher education in the 2010s was justified by analysis of average graduate earnings premiums which now look very crude and misleading. As the analysis gets better we see more nuance - but overall, the picture is looking worse and worse.

This journey in active labour could easily take more than two hours.
The Royal Devon Trust’s response is another damning example of broken Britain. Knowing women will inevitably give birth en route, it implemented a bizarre, fatalistic contingency plan: remaining midwives were transferred to the Royal Devon and Exeter hospital, with non-specialist hospital doctors and nursing staff instructed to take a rapid emergency ‘crash course’ in precipitous, dangerous births. This is third-world crisis management masquerading as modern medicine.

Nice lunch out with my mum, and have cemented her view that I am a technological genius (I am not) by reinstalling a calendar app on her very elderly tablet: it mysteriously vanished a few weeks ago, and I took a successful punt on the actual data still being stored locally and accessible to the newer version in the app store.
(My assumption is that there was a security issue with the years-old version she had and it was force-deleted.)
As an added bonus, I showed her how to actually create new entries in it, so she is delighted to be able to put appointments in it as well as use it to see which recurring bank charges are coming up soon (my father set them up before he died).
