As always, @npub1fdr…lvhs nailing it on describing the current AI situation in a succinct manner: "The early web was a technology that grew more profitable every day, which workers and young people had to force on their bosses – and AI is a technology that grows less profitable every day, and bosses have to force it on workers and young people." https://pluralistic.net/2026/05/26/the-ai-will-continue/

b) Useful information; and
c) The largest possible audience.

Every time you do a "both sides" stuff between "AI hypers and deniers" you are basically telling me that the person worried about the destruction of their life, their job and the environment has the level of delusion of a person like Peter Thiel, an eldritch horror in a vessel made of flesh that thinks humanity, umm, should not exist.

Look, we get it. AI sounds hot. We read the same science fiction books and it is nice to think that maybe one day LLM technology can be leveraged against oppression. News about fake open models are fun in a sense because every time one of those pops up, some idiot is going to lose millions yadda yadda. But you are missing a very important point here: a permission structure is being built around us, and stopping it is absolutely crucial

And please spare me with the "both sides" argument. Because one of them is trying to force feed things to the other. And one of them has all the money and resources and the other has not. This is not people taking sides. This is people trying for the boot to stop pressing against their face.

Saying that you do not want GenAI in the #books you read, the things you watch or the games you play is an understandable and NORMAL position. Maybe they have ethical concerns, maybe they love their artist homies. Maybe they don't like the bland garbage that AI generates. Stop framing this like an horde of neoluddites is starting the Butlerian Jihad (would be fun doh) just because they do not want to follow a romance autor who has a computer shitting novels instead of writing them herself.

#forkiverse Welcome y'all! Couple stuff in case you are still sorting things out:
Use hashtags. This network does not have an algorithm, so they are the main way to find content. You can subscribe to them in the client of your choice. Some people of other instances are already giving some advice.
Some random hashtags to start (I used a space so I do not disturb all of the hashtags)
# catsofmastodon - self explanatory
# dogsofmastodon - ditto
# bookstodon and # books - for bookish stuff
# monsterdon - We gather every Sunday night to watch a crappy sci-fi/horror movie. John us!
# getfedihired If you want to signal that you are looking for job.
# mutualaid if you are in a rough patch and need assistance or want to help others in a rough patch (I'd suggest you inform yourself about mutual aid before using it if you are not familiarized with the term).
Speaking about clients and apps: There are many nice and cool apps for Mastodon both in iOS and Android that add functionality (a "for you" page if you need that kind of stuff, etc)
There is an established culture in the fediverse. Please do not feel overwhelmed. We do not expect you will get everything right in day one. Just be open and kind and people will be as well. This is a diverse place. We still have work to do, but there are minorities that see this place as a safe haven for them and their loved ones. If you are a LGTBQ+ person, you may feel comfy here. Speaking about that, this network is extremely involved in the fight against transphobia.
For Mods: Get a good mod list as soon as possible. Will not bore you with the details here, but do some research about it.
Also for Mods: follow the # fediblock hashtag, it is kind of a crowd sourced alert system against instances and users with illegal/racist/bigoted content.
That One Mastodon Joke:
John Mastodon is the creator of Mastodon and the ruler of the Fediverse.
Hope this helped. Happy browsing!

What's happening at #Bluesky right now is very interesting. The corpos and the moderation team are sending Nazi bar signals (again), so established alternatives like #Blacksky are opening their doors to a possible mass migration. Blacksky even has a "comrade" option for people who aren't black. I still prefer ActivityPub so far, but the amount of work that Blacksky is putting in this is nothing short of amazing
