Thinking outside the algorithm is what got me curious a while back as to what musical discovery tools folks use! Was surprised no one mentioned anything punk-centric.

@npub103t…m2kn @npub1dld…yy2a yeah I'm very much informed by the fact that as a breath instrument musician I can't really wear earplugs when I play and constantly have to negotiate stage volume with the electric hand instrument players. The sax was also designed expressly to maximize volume and peircingness - so I'm a bit of a cheater.
Do wish there was more moshing / stagediving at free jazz gigs lol.
As a sound tech who has often worked in small rooms with only a bit of PA gear - if all the amps are on 12 it can become impossible to make the vox audible.
At the end of the day though the most important thing is that a band has a little think about how they want to sound /how to make that happen before showing up for a gig. And I will co-sign every other piece of advice in the column!

I can see how that happens - I'm definitely biased on this point for a variety of reasons - once again I also think practicing 'performing' is an important part of the puzzle also someone in the band having a little sound tech knowledge can help considerably when communicating with techs trying to get someone sounding the best - some techs also explicitly mix the "headliners" louder - so many bullshit hierarchies in music.

@npub103t…m2kn @npub1dld…yy2a firstly I love that you are a fellow bootlegger! I am tempted to record everything but batteries and consent hold me back.
And I can see how actually listening through in many contexts you are most likely correct but I totally, as a sound tech and musician, disagree with the idea that bands should maximize their stage volume!
It makes sense when it's like a like a two speaker PA and Debbie (who is also doing door and working bar ) is in charge of the mixer but if you are playing in a venue with a dedicated sound tech, especially if you get a full sound check, unless you are going for like specific sonic events (certain kinds of amp breakups or feedback moments) it's a really great thing to be able to keep the stage volume as low as possible - loud enough to feel fun but not overwhelming.
The sound tech can amp it up in the room.
Its better for your ears and also helps to reduce some of the issues you address later on RE:vox. That said playing at moderate volume is for sure something you need to practice to make sure you can do it without the performance suffering. Anyhow I'm like a big big believer about this one thing...

@npub103t…m2kn @npub1mlc…sq3a John Brunner pre-dates cyberpunk (he's British New Wave technically) but I think he touches on sort of similar themes - A Jagged Orbit maybe handles race better than Neuromancer. There's a bit of goofy Britishness though like in general less self-serious.
