Wrapping up a very exciting week as we close out the 2026 Cwtch Hackathon!
This week we made amazing progress on a new iteration of peer-to-peer groups, and tackled some long standing maintenance tasks in preparation for the next version of Cwtch.
It has been a long time since the core team got together in person to hack on cwtch, and we leave this week feeling very excited about what happens next.

Hi, what version of Android is the tablet running? (The note 9 is old enough that there may be API compatibility issues, see: https://docs.cwtch.im/docs/getting-started/supported_platforms)
Are you able to use adb to fetch the crash log off the device? If it isn't a version issue, then that is the best way to narrowing down the cause.

Hi, the flag still does exist (it's located way down the stack in our core connectivity library: https://git.openprivacy.ca/openprivacy/connectivity/src/branch/master/tor/torProvider.go#L282)
As far as we know the instructions should work - though whonix config can be tricky.
It might be worth rolling back to an older version of Cwtch (see: https://git.openprivacy.ca/cwtch.im/cwtch-ui/releases) and if one of those works, then please report the regression.
We will also schedule testing on whonix again to see if we can replicate the issue.

Right now, latency over Tor onion services is mostly insufficient for real time audio or video.

Today we are releasing Cwtch 1.16!
Cwtch is a privacy-only p2p messenger based on @torproject v3 onion services.
The focus of this release was maintenance, including some important work actively improving dependencies.
As a knock on effect, Cwtch should no longer have issues on systems where memory tagging is enabled.
Plus performance improvements.

HI, thanks for the report.
We do have plans for an experiment setting that would stripe common image/video/audio metadata, but it is not currently funded.
On the avif front: which platform is this in regards to, and is it the case that the image isn't displaying properly in the app or that the file download itself is having issues?

1. Apple policies and the general locked-down nature of iOS means that we don't currently think its possible to run an app like Cwtch on iOS without significant workarounds (namely the reliance on a bundled Tor / keeping 1/more onion services alive in the background are both challenges that need to be overcome)
2. We don't have the developer effort right now to even begin to look into that.

Today we are releasing Cwtch 1.15.5!

This release is a small bugfixes update, with an upgraded bundled Tor, and a fix that prevented Cwtch 1.15.0+ from running out-of-the box on some linux systems
We also now have an experimental apt repository for Debian based systems!

Today we are releasing Cwtch 1.15!
This release features new alpha support for Managed Groups i.e. peer-hosed Cwtch groups, which use the p2p Cwtch protocol rather than the legacy groups.
We have also fixed Cwtch on newer version of Tails, improved the UX around importing unencrypted profiles, and improved rendering of markdown formatting and image previews.
We are also trailing two new release formats: a signed windows installer, and .deb package.

Back in September we released Cwtch 1.13, the first version of Cwtch to be labelled as stable, and a major milestone in Cwtch development.
With the Cwtch interface now stable, we are in a position to begin a new phase in Cwtch development: a Path towards Hybrid Groups.

Today we are releasing Cwtch 1.13!
Cwtch is a communication application (and associated libraries) that uses Tor v3 Onion Services to establish surveillance resistant channels between people.
Cwtch 1.13 is the culmination of the last few years of effort by the Cwtch team, and is the first release that meets our bar to be labelled a Cwtch Stable release candidate.

There is a new Cwtch Nightly available for testing!
This nightly supports configurations necessary to get Cwtch working in environments like Whonix. We are asking for people to test this and report back their experiences so we can improve the documentation / flow.
There are also several new features ready for testing include: a new setting to tell Cwtch to save conversation history by default, and the ability to delete unneeded Cwtch Server information.
