I’m excited to share that I’ll be joining The Type Founders as their Director of Design next week! After a few months of collaborating as a contractor, I’ve seen firsthand all the incredible projects ahead—and I can’t wait to dive in. This role brings together everything I love: design systems, typography, web design, and front-end development, all alongside a fantastic team. Looking forward to what’s next! 🎉

To recap the past month or so here in LA:
Protests are primarily isolated to a small, 2-block area downtown. They are largely peaceful and do not impact people’s lives in any way. ICE raids are widespread. Everyone is scared. Even with green cards or citizenship, people are staying inside. This is taking a substantial cultural and economic toll on the city.
We need to ensure the narrative is clear.

I also made an app during a Vox Media hack day and competing news outlets wrote about it (https://www.mic.com/articles/148770/meet-tonr-the-app-that-fixes-the-whitewashing-tendencies-of-instagram-filters). When asked why we didn’t write a post, I replied that wasn’t the work I wanted to do. We just spent a couple days designing and building it, now we had to write about it when the company is staffed full of writers?
I think people really want to do a thing and not all the things. How do we empower people to do that thing is the question.

2025-01-30 23:36:42 GMT

Instead of control I think about what people what to do. Making and managing a website is a job and that’s not what most people want to do, and that’s OK!
For Instagram, I love the photo sharing aspect of it but loathed writing the captions that made them perform decently well in the algorithmn.

The media needs to transition from fact checking to legal checking right now. None of this shit is legal and it’s being reported like “this terrible thing happened” instead of “this thing, illegal under X, Y, and Z laws, happened”
Reporting on the legal status of what is happening empowers the people and the courts to fight back.

It doesn’t work. Compassionate honesty and understanding of what communities need is the only way to cut through. Say no to sound bites, slogans, and concessions. Say yes to honest and direct empathy for one another.

A couple additional details:
1. They have no way to fund the buyouts and OPM legally caps contract buyouts at $25k (https://www.opm.gov/policy-data-oversight/workforce-restructuring/voluntary-separation-incentive-payments/)
2. This is not a “return to office” thing as ALL remote work is being terminated. If you don’t have an have never had an office, you have been ordered to find one.

thanks! It’s been an anxiety filled day. Winds have died down but somehow fires keep flaring up. I wasn’t super concerned until the Sunset fire popped up a few hours ago and now I’m getting worried. We’re all packed up and ready to move if the fire spreads in our direction.

OK dug into it with my inspector and it doesn’t look like optical sizes are included in your font. It’s Roslindale Variable Display with just the weight and slant variable font axis. No CSS tricks can add what isn’t there, but if you drop in a full variable font file it should just work.
+ @npub1xkc…t0mv

2025-01-04 00:30:53 GMT

it’s the default behavior, so I recommend not defining optical sizing anywhere. Haven’t had the chance to inspect it yet to give you more exact code, but here is info on it: https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Web/CSS/font-optical-sizing

💖 looking so good Chris! A tip on making the legibility of Roslindale a bit better would be to use auto optical sizing with the variable font. Some of the smaller uses of Roslindale still appear to be using display styles.

People make fun of the “what happens in the booth stays in the booth” election ads, but I know poll workers who have had to keep husbands out of their wive’s voting booths because they had to “make sure she votes right”. When I was phone banking I also talked with a woman who’s husband or boyfriend was clearly around and it almost definitely changed the nature of the call. Voter intimidation by men is a real problem and I’m glad these ads address it.

thank you so much for sharing. This resonates with me in the US. And I have demons in my family’s past through deep roots in Dutch colonialism.
In the US many states are banning something called critical race theory, or a retrospective of our racist history as a nation. To not revisit our history with eyes open is to repeat it.

Voting is harm reduction.
Voting is not an endorsement.
If a viable candidate at the national level really excites you, consider yourself extremely lucky.
Vote in a way that will be most likely to make the most positive or least bad impact on the things you care about.
But don’t forget to #vote.

Seems not great to penalize individual sites for Google’s non-compliance and data collection practices. I get it, folks don’t consent to being tracked but these sites almost definitely didn’t consent to their visitors/customers being tracked either.

Do you use `font-smoothing: antialiased` in your CSS? I’ve got some NEWS for you.
MacOS Mojave made this the default in 2018.
Also text rendering on Windows heavily relies on subpixel antialiasing.
I highly recommend you do not define `font-smoothing` in your CSS. Issues around differences in text rendering have been resolved with this change in default in MacOS along with higher pixel density displays.

Hallucinations are the least of my concerns. Bi-directional assumptions of accountability are my primary concern. A close second is knowledge transfer between the LLM and myself.
People blame hallucinations for all AI's problems. I don’t particularly mind low-quality responses as long as they are presented in a way that isn’t so authoritative. People produce low quality responses all the time and we have learned to take comments online with skepticism.
