Okay Question for the Nerds
You have your phone and your wallwart to charge it, You've been abducted by aliens.
You want to charge your phone. The aliens have AC and DC but they don't use the same measure for voltage.
Assuming they can understand English, how do you explain what voltage you need to charge your phone?
(5v or 120v depending on how you want to play it)

- They have Barbs (DS9)
- They are Hemipeen (2 dicks) (DISCO)
- They have Quadratesticles (4 Balls, presumably 2 each) (Academy)
I have to think this is on purpose, each show adding more Klingon dick lore.

@nprofile…cyls Sure, but Flatpacks are also OSS.
Honestly I think snaps are a dead end until they change that.

2026-02-10 19:19:03 GMT

- reply

@nprofile…cyls Oh 100%. Entirely frankly, they should drop snaps and use like, Flatpak? Or have apt install AppImages.
Snaps were unironically one of the reasons I stopped using Ubuntu myself. (not as my daily driver, that ship sailed long ago, but on other machines I touch occasionally)

2026-02-10 19:07:45 GMT

- reply

@nprofile…cyls Listen, I agree, but at the same time if you're not going to make an attempt to package all the software that users ask for, there has to be SOME reasonable way for them to get that software.
A centralized easy to enable repo that builds against your version of Ubuntu feels like the ideal scenario.
And given that it'd be snap based, version conflicts wouldn't happen. (afaik, snaps include all deps)

2026-02-10 19:04:10 GMT

@nprofile…cyls Honestly? Yeah, that would solve a lot of but not all of the issues they currently have.

I hate it when developers say they don't/won't support Linux because "they open too many bugs".
What the fuck are you smoking.
They bring in the issues because they're used to bugs being fixed and things getting better with feedback and overall understand how to write bug reports to be useful.
Windows users just cope and hope their computer doesn't eat their files next update.
If nothing else, you WANT it on Linux to get those bug reports. Because for every Linux exclusive bug, you'll have 10 that also effect Windows, but the Windows people ignore because they've been taught that there's nothing they can do.

If websites want to push me to passkeys, they should make having a hardware passkey affordable and universal. I'd be okay with having a passkey with my SSH keys and my login tokens and everything, as long as (A) I can make a good backup of it somehow (this is a BIG one, I know, but I consider it bare minimum to be able to do a good backup, and (B) I can get the key itself for like, $10.
Therefore I would love to know if anyone has a Software implementation that unlocks a Passkey file on a USB Thumb Drive lol, and can then be integrated into Firefox and other software as a passkey provider.

Wacom once made a Battery-less Mouse.
It was essentially the tip bit of their pen but shoved into a mouse chassis, and you used a drawing tablet as a mousepad.
Now hear me out, it failed because they marketed it poorly. If they marketed it as an ultralight wireless mouse, they'd easily be best in class and people would absolutely shell out for that.

2025-11-25 16:02:28 GMT

There's one major thing that #Windows has over #Linux that's a major technical win:
The Windows LibC is far more compatible with applications written for older versions of it than the Linux one. A binary compiled for Windows 98 32 Bit has a reasonable chance of just running correctly on a Windows 11 PC, but the same can't be said for a Linux binary of that age - It might work, but there's a solid chance it won't. If you recompiled it, it'd work perfectly fine, but because our glibc in this case can't load an older version of glibc to handle that application, we get half broken (if invisible) results at best, assuming it doesn't crash outright.
This is part of the problem with distributing games on Steam as Linux Binaries, by the way. It's why older Linux ports of games more often than not no longer run.

There's a time travel episode in Deep Space 9 where some aliens (Quark, his brother, and his son) end up on Earth (at Area 51 of course) during the red scare and get accused of being communist spies. They ask one of them if he's a Commie and if he's read Marx and his response is something like "I'll have to look him up when I get back"
7 episodes later his brother is leading a strike and quoting the communist manifesto.
I think this is deeply funny.

Turns out, George R. R. Martin is why it got written.
Melinda Snodgrass was thinking it over and wanted to write it, but was hesitant to do so, and talked it over with her friend, George, who told her to "not hoarde your silver bullet".
She was worried it might be a bit too intense for Star Trek.

With the new #systemd network booting, I propose this as a new #nixos boot mode:
Start with Erase your Darlings
On Disk, have a Cache Partition, along with your home partition and whatever else you need persistent
During boot, systemd download a boot image from your local server, ideally rebuilt every X hours/days whatever you want. It boots that image.
The image then boots as normal, until quite early on when it mounts (via ssh?) a remote /nix/store. Underneath that mount will be the local cache partition.
When a file is accessed, it's copied to the cache partition and kept for later use.
Writes (like doing nix-shell) will go to both local and the remote.
The local cache partition will every so often garbage collect to match the remote store, deleting excess.
The clients do not run a GC on the remote though, that should be handled by the remote.
Result is that things load a little slower initially, but run at native speed after, Multiple systems don't need to build the same package multiple times, it all lives in a shared store, and updates just happen via reboot.
And since the store is shared, there's no reason you couldn't add some way to trigger a switch on the client machines after the new builds are built; that would make them switch to the newer packages and allow immediate GCing.
Any system offline is assumed off, and simply booting it will already have it up to date.
