Well, yes, no charges had been filed because the investigation wasn't complete and that's how Sweden does things. In the absence of information about what these other 44 cases allegedly were, it's hard to know how much relevance they have.
And when the US finally decided they wanted Assange extradited, they just did it in the UK! There was no need to involve Sweden at all, and it would have been *harder* to ask for extradition there since the UK would also have to agree

I agree with you regarding this being strongly influenced by politics, but also what was being asked of Sweden would have been entirely diplomatically impossible. If the UK had made that demand of Sweden then Sweden would have cover, but it would have put the UK in an equivalently difficult position. There's just no universe where Sweden could justify ruling out extradition before receiving a request.

Swedish law already forbids extradition in the event that it appears someone won't be treated humanely. If Sweden were to make a blanket assertion that all extradition to the US would be a violation of someone's human rights, that would be manifestly incompatible with the treaty they signed with the US.

The equivalent in that case would be the UK requesting that Sweden not extradite Assange to the US, which would be difficult for them to do given that the UK also has an extradition treaty with the US so clearly doesn't view extradition to the US as being (in the general case) likely to result in human rights abuses

How could Sweden give ironclad guarantees that he wouldn't be extradited to the US when such a request had not yet been made and couldn't be evaluated? What ended up happening was he spent 9 years either under house arrest or stuck in an embassy and then the US asked for him to be extradited anyway.

Quick Assange frequent misconceptions thread:
1) "Assange was merely wanted for questioning" - no, Swedish judicial process required that he be interrogated before charges could be made. Sweden arrested him in his absence (he'd already left the country) and filed a European Arrest Warrant. English judges concluded that he had been formally accused of the crimes, even if not indicted. See section 142 of https://www.wired.com/images_blogs/threatlevel/2011/11/assange-judgment.pdf.

1) Afterthe investigation was originally closed, the legal representative of the women petitioned for it to be reopened.
2) He was arrested in his absence on the 27th of September 2010. There was no need to arrest him there again, since he already had been.
3) The EAW was issued on the 18h of November 2010, not 2012.
Sweden couldn't have extradited him to the US without the UK's permission. That's part of Swedish law.

Explains their behaviour in what way? He was arrested in Sweden in his absence after prosecutors concluded there was sufficient evidence he'd committed a crime to be questioned for it (this is what being "arrested on suspicion of" is in the UK). Since he didn't voluntarily return to Sweden, Sweden applied for a European Arrest Warrant and requested that the UK arrest and extradite him. This is how things normally work.

It's entirely common in most jurisdictions for a suspect to be questioned before charges are laid in order to determine (for instance) whether there's sufficient evidence that the charges won't be supported. That doesn't mean charges *can't* be laid without questioning, just that the process typically involves that if it's possible. Assange wasn't going anywhere.

The "Recall can't record DRMed video content" thing is because DRMed video content is entirely invisible to the OS. The OS passes the encrypted content to your GPU and tells it where to draw it, and the GPU decrypts it and displays it there. It's not a policy decision on the Recall side, it's just how computers work.

I'm sure this is general knowledge but anyway: never enable SSH agent forwarding by default if you log into any systems that you don't trust 100%. It gives whoever has root on that system the ability to log into anything else your SSH agent can connect to. Either explicitly pass -A or add host entries to ~/.ssh/ssh_config to enable it for the scenarios you need it.
