"North American lawns, maintained with pesticides and fertilizers, don’t support native plant and native bee populations.
"There’s huge value in challenging monocultural lawns and the enormous ecological damage they have caused, but offering a feel-good moment of aesthetic rebellion risks obscuring, and even undermining, the bigger goal."

In 1980, Devaki Amma met with a life-threatening car accident.
She couldn’t walk for three years, and when she eventually did, it was considered a miracle.
Her recovery was slow and excruciating.
But, amidst the darkest of the clouds, Devaki Amma found a silver lining, one that would, over the years, spread across five acres of land – a native forest she raised and planted with her own two hands.

At the University of Saskatchewan Master Gardener program, I remember an instructor saying to make a natural spot in your yard for the little critters and insects. Pile up old sticks, leaves, stalks, dead wood.
That was the start of my own “wilding” in my yard. This little pile became a refuge for little critters, those welcome contributors to the life cycle of nature.

The removal of the four dams on the Klamath represents the first real attempt at the kind of river #restoration that #Indigenous nations and environmentalists have long demanded.
