“The Iran war is the latest example of a pattern stretching from the Falklands War in 1982 to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. When a nuclear-armed state’s survival is not at stake, its nuclear arsenal provides remarkably little leverage to compel an adversary’s submission. Three wars involving nuclear powers across more than four decades point to the same conclusion: nuclear weapons may constrain escalation, but they rarely determine political outcomes.”

“On the surface, the explanation appears straightforward: Russia and Ukraine remain deadlocked over territory.
But framing the impasse as a territorial dispute obscures a deeper reality: this has always been a proxy war between Russia and the United States — one which can only be resolved through an agreement between the two powers. The Ukrainian military, after all, is effectively kept on life support by Washington....Both Moscow and Washington are aware of this,”

Lotta people don't know their own histories. The last time one of these guys was in power, they were so corrupt and politically and culturally repressive that it fueled a revolution in the country. The first Shah was so bad the Brits teamed up with the Russians to take him out.
But history has a way of repeating, again and again, so who knows. Maybe Shah ver3.0 will be different.

@nprofile…dcv3 being sensationalistic vs being provocative goes to intent & credibility.
If he were making that statement to be sensational, that implies that he was relying on exaggeration and fabrication to elicit strong emotional reactions, primarily to attract an audience.
If instead he was making a provocative statement, it would imply that his intention was to stimulate a deeper more thoughtful or challenging response to spark discussion, debate, or new ideas.

@nprofile…dcv3 maybe i misunderstood your point then. I thought you were saying that the assertion that cartels don't exist was sensationalistic just to get attention rather than it being a provocative statement which is the central theme of the entire book.

@nprofile…dcv3 right, but the way in which we think cartels exist is false. It's a political tool (propaganda) that is used to reduce illegal franchises enabled and managed by the political class to a simple story of "good vs evil". With this, we decide who is a "narco" that needs to be eliminated and who is an "ally" deserving of protection based on our geopolitical interests, rather than on any kind of objective assessment of criminality.

@nprofile…dcv3 It isn't a literal denial of criminal activity. Rather, it is an assertion that the concept of the "cartel" is a myth that hides the true nature of the drug trade: a deeply entrenched partnership between the political class and criminal actors.

2025-10-27 18:13:18 GMT

The “cartel” is a state-made myth perpetuated by US-trained security officials and journalists who are conditioned to focus on criminal kingpins. This obscures the reality that drug proliferation is fueled by the US government itself. US policy, aid and training help to legitimize this system while masking their central role.

@nprofile…dcv3 As many are pointing out in his comment section, we are likely decades away from replicating the type of ecosystem needed to transform those rare earth minerals in the rocks into the finished products. The minerals themselves are fairly common. Processing them is our main problem atm. So far we've invested about $500 billion into the two existing rare earth mining companies outside of China to expand their refining capacity with very little to show for.
