t seems fair to assume that they all know that given fair elections, they will lose, be impeached and send to jail. They, of course, do not want that, so they will escalate and escalate until the opposition gives in. Given the actions of the national Democratic party the last, they will.
Can and will there be a real capable resistance, forceful enough to take on the regime including all the obedient forces and supporting militias? I hope so, but I am not sure.
A national strike of a longer duration then? Given the precarity of most Americans in essential jobs, this has its problems as well. Maybe with full financial solidarity of the (technocratic) higher middle class? But these are pragmatists, are they trustworthy to so so.

His concepts of cultural hegemony and colonialism are quite useful as well. Unfortunately understood and adopted too well by the far right (e. g. Bannon).
What I miss in Naughton's piece is the climate crisis and its impact socially and economically in this power vacuum.

En de partijen op links zijn hier veel te lang veel voorzichtig of zelfs medeplichtig aan geweest. Zoals bijvoorbeeld protesten op universiteiten werden geduid met een bruine saus van antisemitisme verdenkingen.

Isn't this the logical outcome when public officials do not design for users, but for 'safety'. It is purposefully repressive design.
No shade, thus light and transparent - > safe
No bench, nobody can loiter or lie down - > safe
It is like these benches that they retrofit with armrests against vagrants.

I am not sure whether I understand Starmer or trust him anymore. Probably neither. He seems like a conservative with sufficient empathy and intellect to know how wrong the world is, and to want to help to improve it geneuinely. But he seem so afraid to step outside the boundaries of his class and with so much need to feel important that instead letting someone else really do the job of labour leader he keeps on making a joke of it. Seems the perfect recipe for a future election disaster

Similarly in Holland it is rent control and mandatory contracts without end that create secure rental conditions.
When our neo-iberal party VVD created allowed shortterm contracts (1-2 year), prices went through the roof quickly. As landlords and PE only used these, to up the rent significantly with each new contract. This helped by low interest and asset inflation.
It became so bad that this has been mostly turned back.

The congratulations send by European leaders who Trump knows don’t like him is only seen as kowtowing by him and a sign they will give in to his future demands, helped by his blackmailing. It tells him they are afraid of him and will avoid confrontation. Trump’s real power is his instinct for vulnerabilities and weaknesses.
