€20.5M are now available to support journalism, media pluralism and media literacy across Europe.
The new calls will support journalism partnerships, cross border collaboration between news organisations, innovative business models, and local and public interest media.
But also cross border media literacy projects, helping citizens navigate the information space safely and strengthening resilience against disinfo and foreign information manipulation and interference.

AI capabilities are advancing rapidly.
With a strong legal framework, enforcement and the best scientific minds, we can lead the way in ensuring safe & secure AI.
Today, I hosted a special meeting of the Scientific Panel on AI to discuss recent AI incidents.
60 world-leading independent experts have been investigating recent incidents involving loss of control over AI systems. Together with the AI Office, have prepared a set of questions for the companies that developed the models involved.

October means European Cybersecurity Month!
Today’s Eurobarometer shows high awareness, but everyday habits need to catch up: 3 in 4 EU employees encountered suspicious emails, messages or links at work in the six months before the survey.
Let’s turn awareness into action: check senders, use strong passwords and report suspicious messages.
Good cyber hygiene starts with daily habits.

Happy European Cybersecurity Month!

How can we make the online world safer for young people?
Tomorrow, me and Commissioner Glenn Micallef will hear from young people and content creators at our Youth Policy Dialogue.
We’ll discuss cyberbullying, age verification and platforms’ responsibility to protect young people’s mental health, well-being and safety online.
Young people’s voices must help shape the policies that affect them.

Going forward, an autonomous social media account would require children to be 15. For 13-14 year-olds, parents could set up mini accounts with limited features and screen time, while keeping full oversight.

Together with President Von der Leyen, we presented the EU KIDS ACT. This changes the way services for minors are built, making them safe by design.
The KIDS ACT is built on:
✅ Age limits for social media
✅ Safety by design,
✅ Privacy-preserving age verification
✅ Effective enforcement, building on existing DSA and AI Act structures
An important step towards a safer online world for our children.

Today, we designated ChatGPT as a Very Large Online Search Engine and Reddit and Roblox as Very Large Online Platforms under the DSA.
These services indicated that they reach at least 45 million average monthly users in the EU and thus meet the threshold for designation.
ChatGPT, Reddit and Roblox, will now be held to a higher standard of scrutiny and accountability in the EU, in line with their large impact on our citizens and society.

Earlier this week we met again with Meta and TikTok to advance our cooperation on the Ceuta situation.
Both platforms have ramped up enforcement against human smuggling and disinformation.
And these actions are supported by a reinforced regional and global fact-checking network.
Together, we continue to monitor developments closely to assess what further actions are needed.

Sunday marks the beginning of enforcement for the AI Act. The new transparency rules will also start to apply.
Under the new rules, chatbots & other interactive AI systems will have to tell users they are dealing with AI, not a human. Deepfakes will have to be labelled. AI-generated or altered content will also have to carry machine-readable marks so it can be detected.
We are taking an important step towards AI that people and businesses can understand and trust.

As President von der Leyen said, dangerous crossings must stop immediately. Smuggling networks must be dismantled. And returns must be swift, in line with our rules.

I am in close cooperation with Magnus Brunner and Dubravka Šuica, who are working closely with authorities & partners to help manage the situation.
